My name is Canvas. I remember because I wrote it in the corner of the white box. It takes twelve steps to get from the cot to the wall. And the lights hurt my eyes.

(Note: The story isn't in color because I decided to try this without the gimmick! But I still recommend reading the GDocs version.)

I was wondering when you'd show up and place this masterpiece in here. :raritywink:

Just a suggestion: You could always "paint" the words here on FiMFiction and tell the users that they're supposed to read it whilst using the Dark background feature FiMFiction provides. That way, the story's magic wouldn't be lost.

(You know... that black box when you're reading stories... the one that allows you to change font sizes and styles. The background selection is over there).

This is one of the best fanfics I have ever read and it deserves all the attention it gets.

But the formatting on google docs is what really makes it shine, gives it that extra polish that pushes it above and beyond.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, it's still a fantastic work. The color formatting just made it really stand out.

Wow... What an excellent read!! I'm amazed!

Just a quick question though, did you draw any inspiration from The Giver by Lois Lowry for this story?

    #31 · Chapter 1 · 57w, 6d ago · · ·
    Reply

The concept was amazing, but I've read it before...

    I can't remember where though...

I'm afraid to say "The Giver", but maybe it's "The Giver" combined with another tale.  Otherwise, very nice story.  I do feel like some of the colors made Canvas feel the wrong way (at least to me) because as you know, the meaning of colors are totally dependent on the opinion of the person.  So I guess it's just me.  But seriously, this story is very well executed, of course, but the randomly powerful talents of the ponies just comes out of nowhere.  I mean, I could tell Canvas would be a painter because of his interest with colors, but the other ponies' talents are just kinda named.  Of course, for the purposes of the story it was the best way to do it I guess.

Anywho, it was a very, very well-written story.  I feel as though if bronies were to humanize their stories (for the sake of getting non-bronies to read it), we would be assimilating a lot more people.  I'd also like to be able to convince my non-brony friends to read stories like these, but they refuse to cause of the ponies.  It's a shame.

This fanfic can truly be considered a masterpiece.

By the way, some aspects reminded my of The Green Mile (main character is really sensible and has a myserious gift), One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest (the doctor, in which this case is Twilight, is viewed as a bad person) and the Shawshank Redemption (the concept in general, the story of an imprisoned man)

I wrote a comment earlier but it kinda derped :derpyderp1:

This has got to be one of my all time favourites! I would seriously rate this with some of the best stories from this fandom.

The concept of the story is both incredibly interesting and dark at the same time - the thought of a facility that houses ponies with talents deemed either dangerous or a threat to the Royal Pony Sister is somewhat scary. Regardless, it is a concept which is incredibly unique and could be explored further.

Characterisation of Twilight is often hard to get right, but you have done and excellent job of it. The only thing I didn't understand was why she was visiting there in the first place...

As an author myself, I love writing open ended stories - but I really think we could all do with some more about Canvas' journey and story beyond the 6 walls of his cell.

    Looking forward to more,

    Frostwyrm

I mean, really. I liked this. Quite a bit, actually.

The impact of colors and their description made me pause to reflect on the beauty that surrounds us and that we take for granted, as well as being a look into a psyche of a warped individual whose been deprived of such beauty.

That being said, there’s a little something about this story that irks me.

    It doesn’t need the ponies.

You could easily replace Twilight and any references to MLP with relative ease. It’s a great story, but I think you could easily put it on a non-fanfiction literature site.

Of course, that’s just my opinion.

I found this very enjoyable, though I feel it deserved a more elaborate ending, and not one so open-ended. I did enjoy what many people are calling "gimmicks"--the colors on the Gdocs version made it very enjoyable and even interactive. There was solid character development and appeal.

    Overall a good fan fic.

It truly is a marvelous story, though it actually works better with humans, as our governments would assuredly do this to anyone with such uncontrollable power, if not kill them outright.

Which is why I've been so very careful to hide my powers ever since the age of 4 when they began to manifest!  And now, they have MATURED TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL!!!  THE WORLD SHALL BE MINE!!  BWAH HA HA HA!!  *has the power to induce endless flatulence!*  :trollestia:

I can certainly see Celestia fearing their powers, for they are beyond basic magic.  Their powers seem more like fragments of Discord's limitless ability, and that similarity wouldn't be lost on Celestia.  Though, I really cannot see her condoning the crulty and experimentation, not at least the show-canon Princess.  If I take the Tyrant Celestia or Paranoid/Posttraumatic Celestia outlook, however, then it all fits.

Ugh. Toxic amounts of positive reviews. Earned, perhaps, but toxic.

In any event, I find this story to be lacking very little. It felt somewhat cliched, but then, I've read many asylum-themed stories. I noted a few minor technical errors, but not enough to detract from the story as a whole.

*shrugs* If I find something major to complain about, I'll let you know.

I actually went and read this on google docs and wow. I don't even know, this was a fabulous story, and really quite sad :c

It makes me hate Celestia for putting him along with those other ponies there. Taken when he was only eight and being a prisoner there for twelve years, that's awful.

    Have a good one.

    Loved, it once (google docs)

    Loved, it twice (EqD)

Loved, it a third time! (Here!)

Although, I really do miss the Vibrant colors and the way you could work them into your overall picture. I think that you should re-submit with colors and let your likes, comments, and favorites go through the white walls and into the world of color.
