...none of this makes any sense. Almost none of the folks he's picked would work for a super villain that has hurt them and their friends, ripped them from their home, and wants them to kill innocent people or make their lives miserable. Like...at all. This isn't funny, it's just...stupid and nonsensical.

Mm, depends on how it's handled. I could very, very easily see Discord setting things up so that these guys all think that the Elements of Harmony will allow them to defeat Discord and create a gateway back to their own universe(s), so the fact that they hate Discord and want to defeat him would lead to them doing exactly what he wants. Or, play it as if the Element Bearers are his friends and allies (though that wouldn't last very long.) Or, make sure Celestia, Luna and the Element Bearers all think these new players are on his side, so they will attack the humans without apparent provocation from the humans' perspective and of course the humans will fight back. I mean, he's Discord. Stirring up shit between people who could have been on the same side if he hadn't stirred shit up is what he does.
