Even an alicorn as gentle as Cadence may find herself on the front lines, fighting to save strangers and loved ones. I don't get it. Why isn't she the leader of them? Fluttershy can't even lead her friends, so how is she commanding Cadance?
I mean, Cadance's freaking cutie mark is LOVE.
4115791 It's explained at greater length in the RP thread on Deviantart that started all of this, but basically, after the events of the Royal Wedding, Cadence was tainted by her bitterness and fury at Chrysalis and by extension all Changelings over what they tried to do. That taint was just enough to make sure that the Violet Light of Love bypassed her and went to Fluttershy -- who was trying to save Red Lantern Rainbow Dash FROM the Red Light of Rage at a very serious risk to her own life.

Most basically -- beings called the Emotional Entities in the Geoff Johns version of the Green Lantern mythos, who represent the emotional spectrum that is generated by and empowers all life, were getting worried about a plan by the Guardians of the Universe to control them. So they sent aspects of their power into the universe of Equestria to protect them. Unfortunately, the Black, embodied in Nekron,, has gone after them and seeks to destroy them all - by killing every living thing in Equestria. The ponies naturally object to this, the emotional entities are drawn to them as a result, and the story and fight is on.

4115881 Well, in the original art by Cynos-Zilla that started all of this, he had Fluttershy as the first Star Sapphire, so the writers who began the whole thing went with her as the 'Queen of the Star Sapphires'.

Really, Fluttershy would be Indigo (but a proper channeler of Indigo, not a horrible morally bankrupt criminal being brainwashed into feeling compassion).
Rainbow would be either Red or Green.
And I could easily see Equestria as a deathworld tailored for Lanterns. Equestria has hard counters to, at the very least: Red, Orange, Green, and Violet. Red has the windigos which feed on hatred and rage and freeze things, Orange has to deal with dragons who turn greed directly into biomass, Greens would fall under Discord's willpower-ignoring mind control, and Changelings eat the Violet love.
For those of you who are confused:
Red:Rage, Orange:Greed, Yellow:Fear, Green:Will, Blue:Hope, Indigo:Compassion, Violet:Love.

You know, that's a very good point. Equestrian-Earth is overrun with emotivores of various stripes. Including, I would argue, the Alicorns.
4124242 Those are some good points. But I should point out that in this particular take on Equestria, there is/was only one windigo left. It went after Rainbow Dash shortly after she made Scootaloo into a Red Lantern to save her life, and Dash was able to create a new ring and fuse it to the monster, turning it into the Red Lantern 'Windy Goes'.
And with Orange, well it doesn't end up with a dragon. Not at first. Rather it goes to a very little pony who wants something no amount of money can buy, and she "wants it NOW!"

You could even make the case that Parasprites are a prototype anti-Indigo bio-weapon, that Discord's whole thing makes him ideal against both Green and Blue, and Ponies themselves could potentially be the basis of an anti-Yellow weapon.
I had the idea earlier thatlike the idea that Equestria is an anti-Lantern bio-weapons facility created by the Reach that went out of control because Discord.
