They seem to have more meaning than most other categories. Being (usually) literary fiction, sad fics have always made me kind of take a step back and look at life in a different perspective, and that's usually the effect I try and make when I write. I like to make the reader think of a matter differently than they would have if they hadnt read it. 
I LOVED it! I've always wanted to read a Dashie-at-school fic.
