I read it as a downer ending (although Rarity's internal dialogue seems to contradict this), but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be an interpretative narrative.
So I'm going to assume that it's a "Rarity starts to realize how difficult this might be, but wants it to work anyway," much like dating outside your culture can be a terrible burden at times.
If it hadn't been for the author writing Rarity's thoughts, and we only saw her "What have I gotten myself into?" line, I would assume it was negative.

One of the people on this site once said that he only considers a Spike-fic good if it makes him think "God dammit Spike" at least once.
Somehow I'd gotten it into my head that the reason it looked like more of a lick on the cover, was because dragons and ponies kiss differently... it was an interesting theory anyways.
I appreciated how Rarity drove home the point that she was not shallow and wouldn't dismiss Spike over something so small. And I found her abrupt goodbye rather enjoyably comical.
