As for the bearers of the elements, only Shining Armor has changed. While a prequel is not listed, this is part of an ongoing series so far, starting with "My Little Pony: Friendship is Shining." All the others in the series are marked with the "Friendship is Shining" title

This is not good. Unlike Trixie Sunset Shimmer lacks the reserve to be a good pony, and she clearly is delving into magics far more dangerous then she realizes. She's a gambler that's getting in deep with the sharks, she's so close to having them bite her face off and she doesn't know it.

Which was actually an additional reason I ended up using her (the first being an idea I had just before starting that will become fully clear either later in the story or in one of the later parts of the series). A few people who have talked about this (on earlier stories and with other Trixie related ones) felt Trixie was treated unfairly, which is somewhat understandable so I touched on the complaint. So I wanted to make someone who was a little nastier to the ponies and seemed to deserve it more. Considering her personality in the movie, Sunset Shimmer seemed perfect.

Roughly, she plans to incinerate a beast that is about 240 ponies. And that is not yet adding the fact that it is a constellation coated bear living in the Everfree forest and is pissed. Get the popcorn! I wanna see Sunset Shimmer fail and fall for Shining Armor in his victory.

Shining Armor better not let Sunset Shimmer slip away after he's done lulling that Ursa Minor to sleep. Sunset Shimmer showed no regard for life, and is clearly insane. Far too dangerous to be allowed to wander off on her own.
And Snips and Snails better face "real" punishment this time.
And meanwhile, Twily and Spike are missing all the action.
Put two and two together Shining Armor, and you'll realize that Sunset is the very mare you talked to earlier that morning.
And I'd send a message to the princess anyway if I were you. Sunset Shimmer is clearly insane if she is willing to destroy life with no regard for it. Who knows what she'll try next? You have to stop her before somepony gets hurt, or worse.

Also, Shining, why suspect her knowing your name when your friends were talking to you and at least ONE Shining Armor was stated.
And now the larger story unfolds, off to more Shining being confronted by Sunset in the future... Ah, but I am not the author, so I will hope to see more of the changed canon episodes in how Shining Armor solves this.
I am so fearing if this universe ever works it way up to "Magic Duel" and Sunset Shimmer gets her hooves on the alicorn amulet. As if Sunset wasn't crazy enough as it was.

I was mentally reading Sunset's lines in Trixie's voice. Then I caught myself and tried to give her the right voice. Then I realized that their voices aren't actually very different. Or it's just been long enough since I've heard their voices that they've merged together in my mind.
Earlier I made a comment on the first story of this series saying that there was a problem with a lot of the story not being different enough from the episodes. This story, on the other hoof, is a good example of the right way to do this sort of thing. It's still similar to the episode, but with enough changes to keep the story interesting and the readers interested.
And bringing Sunset into the picture certainly helped that all out.
And I'm just going to go ahead and make the Shining Shimmer shipping suggestion now. Because if every other mare around here is a possible candidate, why not her?
