Daedalus Aegle

Black Lives Matter. Good things are good, actually. I write about wizards and wizards' apprentices. 90% of prophecy is just pattern recognition.

This story is a sequel to The Equestrian Card Wars of 2013

The call has gone out. The world cries out for a hero, or at least something to keep us entertained for a while until something else comes up.

Now, in Ponyville, great heroes assemble to do battle in a mighty tournament of glory. But is anypony prepared for the dangers that await them, in... the Lair of the Necromancer?

Probably. But come on, where's the fun in it if we already know that?

A story about ponies playing Magic: the Gathering.
Rated Teen for ponies behaving badly, elaborate profanity.
Cover art from Ponylude.

I prefer Inverted. You really get the most out of Kamigawa flip cards.

Darn, Was hoping to win that card for my Spicy Jalapenos White/Red Deck

Handy. Definitely handy. Especially when you ponify the names, though I'm surprised they did so with Medomai. You'd think sphinxes would be entirely Equestria-compatible. Oh well.

Also, I do hope Zecora's just trolling Tia. Seems kind of out of character for everyone involved, and cruel as Hythonia herself.

That said, great decks for all involved. Illusions for Trixie (especially Phantasmal Ursa,) bureaucrats for Twilight (though I wouldn't have been surprised if she went with SCIENCE!™,) a surreal mirror match between a lackey and a shapeshifter... Fantastic work! I was expecting Zecora to play white-black... though that seems kind of racist now that I write it.

In any case, looking forward to more. I leave you with one last thought:

“That’s cool,” Derpy said happily. “I didn't have a deck, so I just bought four of those card pack things and added some lands when I came in."

"Usually, I'm doing this for real."
(Couldn't resist. :raritywink:)

I couldn't decide, and ended up doing it very selectively, only when I thought knowing the card in detail was important to understanding the match. I also seem to have forgotten to put in a link showing that Zecora's Cockatrice queen is a ponified Hythonia the Cruel, as you may have figured out on your own. The link is there now.

My own biggest problem with the story is the extent to which I had to make them ooc to make the story work and be funny. I'm afraid I'm probably gonna get some dislikes over it. That said, I love trash-talking Zecora, she was so much fun to write it even made up for the difficulty of rhyming :applejackconfused:
Mind you, my real-life experience is that board games seem to give people licence to be incredibly cruel to their best friends with no provocation. I possibly drew some inspiration from that.

That said, great decks for all involved.

Thanks

Now, Tia, it's not nice to take out your anger on the poor dragon.

Also, Pinkie's deck is awesome. Though personally I think Diamond Dogs would work better than changelings as goblin analogues, especially since Chrysalis has already been established as using changelings in her deck.

And Dash... I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where that plotline goes.

All in all, most entertaining.

This is not going to be remembered as the greatest day in Spike's life, or the most noble decision Tia has ever made.

That's a good idea, actually. Let me just change that... *edits*

All in all, most entertaining.

Thank you again ^^ three more chapters to go, now.

SWAP team

Special Weapons And Ponies?
Also I Wonder If Lyra got In on this, would she be running W/G Innistrad Humans With Champion of the Parish?

Huh. At my usual store, the odd player out just gets a bye for the round. Though that wouldn't lead to such entertaining circumstances. And apparently Pinkie's playing a Grixis deck. Go figure.

Also, overriding prime directive or not, Twilight's going to notice when Celestia gets her name wrong. On the other hand, Chrysalis is probably going to remember the name of the mare who was instrumental in defeating her. On the third hand, I find it hard to believe that absolutely no one heard earlier conversation about drones and such... I want to let it go because of Rule of Funny, but this is a heavy strain on my suspension of disbelief.

Oh well. At least the Flutterdash is magnificently entertaining. I look forward to more.

Gilda let loose a mighty roar that turned to weak sobbing as her breath ran out. “Stop stealing all my friends!”

Alright, this got a chuckle from me.

It's pretty bad in that regard, yes. Though in my defense, Chrysalis also did an absolutely terrible impersonation of Princess Cadance, and nobody seemed to notice that.
Err, except Twilight :facehoof:
But yeah, a combination of stretching the Rule of Funny to the breaking point, and Twilight being pretty distracted by other concerns at the moment.

Oh well. At least the Flutterdash is magnificently entertaining. I look forward to more.

"And when I regained consciousness and saw her giving me CPR, it was love at first sight." Yeah, I described the FlutterDash subplot to my prereader as "romance that makes you want to kill someone". :twilightoops:

^^
3766160
I actually had not seen that particular card before :twilightoops: good old Unhinged.

3765949
Indeed.

I kinda feel sorry for Chrysalis. But on the bright side, now she has Silver Spoon, who is intelligent enough to play games with! :yay:

This story needs more upvotes. :fluttershysad:

3771157
Glad you think so :) Yeah, it hasn't gotten quite the response I was hoping for, but, well, it's a friggin' weird piece of storytelling.

I never doubted who the champion would be for a moment. :yay:

Also, I look forward to Celestia getting revenge on Chrysalis, now that the queen isn't bloated on love for the princess thereof.

Also also, you'd think Chryssy would've assimilated more ponies into the hive mind. They seem like much better conversationalists.

In any case, looking forward to the Flutterdash resolution and whatever else you've still got planned.

3775725
I hate to disappoint, but I'm afraid I've used up the good ideas I had for the FlutterDash subplot already. There was going to be another scene, but it just... didn't work, and it wouldn't actually resolve anything more than what's already there anyway, so I ended up leaving it out.
The final upload will go up in an hour or so, I think, and it's... well, you'll see.

Huh. Well, that turned out well enough. Still, alicorns, man. Wings + horn = cray-cray.

Thank you for this. A most entertaining read.

i'm looking for some Mats for Magic right now because of this, already found some sleeves.

3799347
Awesome, now I can go pester Wizards of the Coast for royalties :pinkiecrazy: Nothing can possibly go wrong.
Really though, this made you want to try the game? That's awesome  Hope you have fun.

3801653
i think thou hath misinterpreted my meaning,
i was looking for some playing mats for it, not some cards, i already had a deck last year, though it inspired me to look for some more cards, instead of just using some spares that i gained from games, a little inspiration goes a long way y'know

P.S. do you actually play magic? if so, what kind of deck (E.X. Boros)

(edit: to avoid confusion, i have still been using my deck, and playing, every thursday, as school work forbids my work on friday, thanks to friends and a formed club, it still works out.)

3802935
Right, that seemed a bit strange really.
I play loads of things. I think right now I have 11 decks, all of which I play on occasion. One of them is indeed Boros. Boros was actually my very first deck, back when the original Ravnica was new in 2007 or so.

3832031
Abrupt Decay doesn't only destroy creatures, but nonland permanents :)

3832031

also, planeswalkers count as both creatures and players, or moreover, probably artifacts/players. you can directly attack them with spells, they cast spells, and they have a life counter, or atleast so i think. everyone that i know has a P.W. but me. >.< MONEH WHERE ART THOU.

3835568
Planeswalkers can be targeted like any other permanent, but a spell like Dark Betrayal that says "target creature" only can't be used on planeswalkers.

Well hello Chrysalis. What an unexpected surprise. Seriously did not see that one coming.
Shining plays either soldier or knight tribal or a stall deck right?

From what we see of Zecora's deck it seems Everfree based. Nice

The clone/sliver/shapeshifter mirror match is probably my favorite though.

Im not overly sure what Pinkie's deck is, but its definitely funny.

3920057
Those two were great fun to write :) I think trash-talking Zecora was my favorite thing about this entire story.

Oh geez Luna. Way to go there.
At least Zecora won the tounry? I'm pretty sure we haven't seen her loose. Though I don't think we've seen Chrysalis loose either.
And the Flutterdash continues to be...sickeningly sweet? Yeah thatl work.
Sad that the draw wasn't my favorite method for doing so. Unsiprised as the card neither fits anyone's deck and is pretty darn obscure. Behold the glory of Divine intervention!

Yeah, completely unsuprised that it was Derpy. Was expecting that from the moment she said she threw her deck together out of 4 bosters.
As for the rest: And here I was thinking it couldn't get any worse

3920358
And that is why Luna is never let out on her own.
Sickeningly sweet, eh? I always thought the romance was best described as "absolutely horrifying".

3920411
And so, what was supposed to be a big fun occasion is reduced to a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. Hope you've enjoyed reading it anyway though :twilightblush:

Well in exchange for all the unresolved plot threads we get to see Shining Armor being badass. I will take that any day of the week.

“That’s cool,” Derpy said happily. “I didn't have a deck, so I just bought four of those card pack things and added some lands when I came in."

Also known as every round one FNM ever :rainbowlaugh:

Awww. Chrysalis has someone to talk with now. :rainbowkiss:
And it beats being around Diamond Tiara, certainly.

Would've figured Sombra for just white-black, myself.

Battle of Wits? That implies anyone else at the table is armed. :raritywink: Though I'd love to see Discord cast Enter the Infinite...

Also, given his "spread the dark crystal" plan, Sombra is a perfect candidate for a pony praetor.

Thank you for an exquisite epilogue.

There is no rule against me playing a full playset of every legal card ever printed, so long as I can shuffle it unaided.

I'm a little surprised that Discord limited himself to only playing legal cards, actually. Or ones that had been printed, for that matter. :trollestia:

4023887
Chrysalis and Silver Spoon are adorable together, if I may say so myself :rainbowkiss:

4024411
Glad you liked it

4024597
I mostly put in "legal" just so this wouldn't be a repeat of the Power Nine scene, since I already did those jokes with Luna. But I do think his deck has to include the Un-sets. Not that it matters, since I never got to the point of showing the actual match. Oh well.
