    Progress Report

To all of you who check out this blog, I am writing to let you know that I am still not abandoning you, or have dropped off the edge of a cliff. Work on Guardians of Magic is still continuing at a steady pace and the upcoming chapter is going to end up being something of a doozy when I get it rolling out for you guys. That said, GoM is not my only concern or project on the go, so having to share time between it, AoD, helping out a buddy with his chapter because he had been stuck for months, and another secret project of mine does end up putting a few constraints on just how much writing I'm able to get done for ponies.

However, I do have a little teaser from the upcoming chapter for all of you, introducing a new (read: yes, another new) character! Give me your thoughts, comments, and concerns about the latest addition to the supporting cast.

The creature sighed pleasantly as it looked at the closed doors. It was certain that within the room beyond them was a stallion working himself into a tizzy due to some project or another, and that the unicorn would have run himself completely ragged in the week of her absence.

Knowing that the inevitable likely could not be delayed any longer, the creature raised one small clawed hand covered in copper scales and knocked three times, then twice more, before opening the doors and entering the office. Just as she thought, Coltinster was surrounded by so many books it would have been impossible to see that he was there if the golden nimbus surrounding his horn didn't provide the light that gave him away. She could hear the sounds of his excited murmurs and the scratching of the quill being kept aloft in his horn's glow.

"I'm back," the young dragoness declared, and shut the door behind her. No new noises greeted her salutation, only the scratching of a quill and the flipping of pages rushed to meet her. Sighing again and shaking her head with a good-humoured smile on her face, she walked through the room on her hind legs until she was on the opposite side of the desk. "Coltinster, I'm back. Aren't you going to ask how it went?"

    Still no response.

The dragoness eyed him sceptically for a few seconds, not sure whether or not she should believe how into his work he appeared to be, and then decided on the ultimate test. Grinning like the malevolent little imp she could be at times, she tiptoed past the stallion towards the large chest of drawers-that was twice Coltinster's height- that he kept at the back of the room. She glanced around and spotted just what she needed.

A minute later the small female dragon wyrmling was standing precariously on a pair of downy pillows that perched on a stack of four books, which, in turn, were sitting on the highest step of a stepladder. She reached a clawed hand out while being mindful of her balance. Almost there...almost...just a little more...

"Touch my chocolate without permission and you're a newt for a week, Irithera."

    "Yiahhh!"

She landed with a thump and a clatter as the sudden sound of the Headpony's voice cost her her balance and her shot at the jar of dark milk chocolate Coltinster always kept out of her reach. A pillow landed on her head, with one of the books dropping onto the pillow before bouncing to the floor just beside. Groaning just a little in disappointment more than actual pain, the young dragoness stared forlornly at the jar of chocolates, tail swishing back and forth agitatedly.

Drat. And I was soooo close this time too...

Coltinster's hooves on the floor alerted her to his approach, and he chuckled faintly when his head appeared above her. "Irithera Brightflame, just what am I going to do with ye?" Irithera rose to her feet and looked down at them, feeling just a small amount of admonishment in the old pony's voice. She shuffled her feet while Coltinster turned away, hiding a smile. A piece of chocolate surrounded in golden light floated down in front of her nose, and the copper dragoness beamed in surprise before snatching it in her claws.

"Thank you!" she told him with the sincere earnestness only a child could produce. Coltinster's answering laugh was barely audible.

"Make sure that ye clean up the mess ye made," Coltinster said. He returned to his writing. "So, how fares our fine furred friend in Drakken? He hasn't been eaten, I hope?"

"Nope," Irithera replied brightly, munching on the chocolate while putting her impromptu chocolate-jar-reaching device away. "He's as fine as he always is. I think that he has to have dragon blood in him or the nerves of the Princess to live around such big, huge dragons all the time."

Coltinster nodded his head and made a noise in his throat. Irithera finished putting away the pillows on Coltinster's napping couch and the books into the bookshelf before looking at the old unicorn again. He was back to writing down whatever it was he was writing, the Headpony also holding up a book with his magic, and glancing at it from time to time.

What is he writing in that? wondered Irithera. Casually padding her way over to him, the dragoness clamboured onto his back and peered over his shoulder, inquisitiveness evident in her pointed face. Her tail waved back and forth, her ruddy brown scales faintly glinting in the light.

"That's Aragrakh," she pointed out, recognizing the pattern of the runes his quill was making on the page. He nodded.

    “Very astute.”

“Why are you writing in draconic?”

“This is to be a going-away present for Twilight Sparkle,” he replied. “Tell me, Irithera, what is written using draconic notation?” She peered at the page for a second or two, reading it, and then her expression revealed sudden clarity.

“Spellbooks,” she answered. “Are you copying your super-secret spells to give to her?”

“Only a few of them,” Coltinster relented. “I certainly wish for her to be prepared for what she may encounter on her journey, but by no means am I entrusting her will all of my spells.”

"So which ones are you going to give her?" asked Irithera. "Are you going to teach her how to scry on ponies, or stop time, or turn into a raven?"

"Nay, I shall not be teaching her anything. Twilight Sparkle is the Princess' own pupil and the Element of Magic, remember? She will not need my instruction even if these spells are far more complex than what she has currently performed. From what I understand she has been able to teleport for over a year now and has since been able to create a moderately powerful Wall of Force. She will undoubtedly find these spells a challenge, but if I know her she will rise to the challenge."

Irithera nodded a couple of times, letting the silence sink in for a bit before opening her mouth again. “How do you tell if a foal has raided your pantry?”

    Coltinster grinned slightly. “How?”

“Only the bottom shelves are empty. How do you tell if a dragon has raided your pantry?”

    “How?”

“Only the gems are missing. How do you tell if a parasprite has raided your pantry?”

    “How?”

    “Pantry? What pantry?”

So, like I said, comments, queries, suggestions?

It's lunchtime in Ponyville, and Twilight Sparkle's stomach is calling for something with a little more flavour than what she usually feeds it. How will she and her friends react, though, when the lavender unicorn discovers that there is no place in Ponyville where a pony can get a decent burrito?

I haven't eaten since...I guess some time yesterday?  I'm not exactly sure.

Anyway, I'm going to Taco Bell now.  We don't have real Mexican where I'm from.

Stalin is amused! Another comedy! Stalin thought he completely drowned in a sea of Dark/adventure fics.

Humor is good. Pacing is fine. Characters are acting properly. Idea is... interesting. Overall: nice little fiction for evening entertaiment. Keep the good work and good luck!

Cute! I know how tough it can be when you're really jonesing for a good burrito. If you sub black beans in for black eyed peas, and add enchilada sauce, then bake the whole thing, this burrito recipe is essentially exactly they way I make vegetarian enchiladas.

Fixes: tainted should be "tinted," "frackus" should be "fracas."

#6 · 136w, 6d ago · · ·

This is why I put hot sauce on pretty much everything.  I loves Dat spice.  Being the half Mexican I am I also eat almost everything in a tortilla.  Those tacos or burittos are always manly. There's a whole lot more to say but no one wants to see a wall of text.  So yeah.  Dis fic is major win

Definitely on par with the rest of your work over on Fanfiction.

Fantastically done. The characters behave like you'd expect them to if this were actually in the show. It's not rushed at all which a lot of folks seem to do with one shots (not that I expected you to, of course). Twilight temporarily loses it again, which is always fun to watch/read.

And lastly, Derpy and Lyra! Thumbs up, my good sir.

I would cut out RD's description when she first shows up. Normally it's a good idea to give a character a detailed description when they first appear, but when using characters that your readers will already know, you should just skip the description. My feeling at that point was "yeah, it's Rainbow Dash. I've seen her in hours of cartoons, and I have a folder of RD pics on my HDD. Move on."

Overall, though, not too shabby.

#11 · 136w, 6d ago · · ·

Ah awesome story.  You did a great job with capturing the characters and playing them out just right.  Not to mention, the concept is refreshingly unique!  Quite an enjoyable tale, my friend.

(Although I do have a fierce craving for a burrito now...)

I do agree with you on that point about describing Rainbow Dash when the fanbase knows what she looks like, since I do have over five years now of fanfiction writing experience under my belt, I felt early on while writing it that I would need to practice writing the ponies' physical descriptions so that I'll have already done it once or twice before they appear as characters in my Kingdom Hearts epic over on Fanfiction.net

But thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Twilight’s horn became encased in magenta light, as did one of the burritos on the plate. She brought it to her mouth in her spell’s grasp, and bit down into the burrito.

It was horrible.

"FUCK YOU APPLEJACK WHY IS THERE APPLES IN THIS?"

"What sugarcube? Everything has to have apples in it!"

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I learned that good friends will always be there for you. No matter what problem you may face, they will do whatever it takes to help you. Just today, I felt a craving for a tasty burrito, but found to my dismay that this delicious Manican food was unknown in Ponyville. Seeing my unhappiness, my friends worked together and found a way to help me. Rainbow Dash even flew all the way to Canterlot (and back) to get the special ingredients needed to make them.

I also learned that if I run around looking panicked, ponies will do just about anything to calm me down, including flying to Canterlot and back if necessary.

Your Faithful Student,

Twilight Sparkle

Dear Twilight Sparkle,

It looks like you've learned something important about friendship today. However, I simply must ask you one thing: what's a burrito?

What better way to finish a Twililicious day than to read a fan fic where our a-dork-able purple unicorn snaps?  :twilightoops:  This one was satisfying --maybe as much as Twi's burrito.  Seeing that you mentioned your experience with fan fiction writing, this really should not have come as a surprise.  The transitions between scene flowed like water being poured into a glass; nothing felt out of place.  Your use of all characters --mane cast, background ponies, and even Fluttershy's cousin-- fit together better than slices of bread in a loaf.  The way you portrayed them in here feels very accurate to the show.

I, for one, would like to disagree with Derpy Mooves concerning the need to describe Rainbow Dash's physical traits.  It is very true that a detailed description is rather unnecessary when the audience clearly will know these things, but I think at the same time it was important to do it for this fic for the sake of practice as well as the possibility that few readers who may not have known immediately who RD is.  :rainbowhuh:  Whether you find it necessary in future writings is entirely up to you.*

So was there anything wrong with this fiction?  If anything I would have to say that I did not see any destruction of the fourth wall coming from Pinkie Pie, but even that isn't saying much at all.  Perhaps a "thumbs up" does not do justice as a rating here.  5 stars then.

*I realized as I was typing up that paragraph that is was the lessons from English Composition II ans Speech 101 that kicked in.  Dang, I take personal pride in that and the fact that Twi is my favorite pony --students for the win!  :twilightsheepish:

This story is great, the characters behave almost like in the show, I just have 2 nitpicks...

What is a tortilla shell? Are you refering to those things Taco Bell uses? or something else? I know that a burrito must be made with a Flour tortilla (tortilla de harina here in Mexico) that are completely different to what TB calls "tortillas", here in Mexico we don't have TB's because we wouldn't stand for that s***. I went to a TB once but it was years ago when I visited L.A. the food wasn't bad but it wasn't good or mexican either. Wow I got off topic.

The other is the pun for Mexico, it didn't sound right; some people use the "Mexicolt" but you can't change that to an equivalent for Mexican (Mexicoltian?), maybe the term Marexico and Marexican would have been better. I'm not hating on the story because of this, but "Manico" didn't sound right to me.

That's all I got to say, great story and I hope to see more.

#29 · 136w, 5d ago · · ·

The stomachs of the four hungry ponies that had skipped lunch making lunch growled sharply. Twilight was the first to break out laughing.

Shouldn't that be "five"? Unless you're counting that flower RD ate?

#30 · 136w, 5d ago · · ·

>>311182

I believe that "tortilla" and "tortilla shell" are interchangeable for the same thing. I know that personally I've always called flour tortillas tortilla shells because you also call an empty taco a taco shell. Weird bit of logic, but it makes sense to me.

As for the pun for Mexico, "Mane"ico was really the best I could come up with while still keeping the "ico" to become "ican food". It was probably just my lack of imagination/experience when coming up with pony puns.

Thanks for enjoying it! I'm probably going to end up writing more MLP one-shots because of this.
