Oookay. Well. First thing first.
Part of me hates Trevor immensely, but then again he represents what we do in GTA all the time once boredom sets in. So...yeah.
Second. The guards. Brainwashed and mental conditioning. These guys would rush through a choke point without a second thought. Angry that a pony was doing this, but not fear.
Third. Trevor is smart, he would go through with killing Celestia, but he would do it by picking her apart what she treasures most. Elements of Harmony and do it in the most gruesome matter possible.
So he would probably find the remnants of the PHL to help him. Probably even join up before hand once he learn what they were doing and offered his skills.

There are some references to the earlier ones, especially San Andreas, but no, you do not.
Trevor is the best in GTA, he's hilarious especially when you jump back into him from another character to find him passed out in his underpants or a woman's dress in the ass end of nowhere.
