This is so amazing you are pure genius
Despite the fact that I frowned at this line,(don't take it personally, I frown at all thoughts of Dash being gay...) I enjoyed the sentiment of this story. Especially the part about Luna pushing her back towards the planet.

Well, I read the prompt, and I tried to come up with the most unexpected pairing I could, short of full-out crack ships that would have nothing to do with the prompt (Dash x Diamond Tiara, for example.)
As for how I managed to write it well... I suppose I've got a talent for finding ways into the heads of my characters?

Good narration, Rainbow's flight to the edge of the athmosphere was particularly well described. You mastered said tags as well.
My only advice is to use a new paragraph when switching to another point of view; for example:
'“’One night, Rainbow.’ That’s what you said to me,” Rainbow murmured.
Luna was looking down at her in shock, remembering herself, remembering one of the countless dreams she’d had while trapped inside of Nightmare Moon.'
instead of
'“’One night, Rainbow.’ That’s what you said to me,” Rainbow murmured. Luna was looking down at her in shock, remembering herself, remembering one of the countless dreams she’d had while trapped inside of Nightmare Moon.'
(Incidentally, there's a double space in there.)
I think 'the athlete' can be replaced with 'she' in 'The athlete became more somber, resting her head against the Princess next to her' as well.
I found it interesting that Rainbow thought Nightmare Moon became a monster, or at least was believed to be one by the other ponies. I forget that the tale of the Mare in the Moon is well known.
I liked some lines more than others;
'She looked back up at the moon, only the highest and thinnest clouds still drifting across its face,'
'Luna stretched out one mighty wing, wrapping it around the smaller pegasus with a gentle smile,'
'Luna politely fought not to snicker as she pictured Rainbow Dash head-deep in what Cloudsdale called a lawn, tail flicking irritably above her,'
'“Snrk!” Luna couldn’t help herself, picturing the little filly in one failed attempt after another, all leading up to the described incident. To her credit, she’d tried, but picturing Rainbow Dash flailing around the yard while fireworks sprayed everywhere was just too much,'
'Luna’s ears pricked up at the suggestion of a deeper motivation, wondering what it might be'
and
'“So I guess I thought I could see why you went and became the big, mean, scary monster that some ponies thought you were. I used to dream about following you up there, finding you on the moon… that we’d just be together there, two monsters, and maybe that we’d be able to....”
“…To stop being monsters, at least to each other?” Luna prompted after a long moment of silence. Rainbow nodded, closing her eyes to hide how they were watering just remembering the pain.'
One last note; Luna/Rainbow is indeed rare, but Celestia/Rainbow is rarer. I've seen a few of the former but never one story for the latter.
This was amazing, awesome characterization, but seriously now I'm just aching for more.

Well, now THIS is a treat. I've read Appledash stories, but never a Lunadash. I love the mental imagery of Dashie trying to fly all the way to the moon, but then icing up like Iron Man.
This was a very sweet story, so you get the package deal of a fave, upvote and a watch.

This is one of my favorites simply for its value as a straight-forward, simple story that's still touching. The fact I cranked it out in under an hour helps too, compared to my various multi-parters.

Oh wow that was kind of adorable. The idea that somepony would want to join Nightmare Moon in her exile seems kind of odd at first, but once I think about it I can imagine her becoming a sort of icon for those who feel they're outcasts.
Actually, yeah. That makes a lot of sense. I'll be adopting that idea now.

This is just on the right side of the line between so-uncommon-it-works and crack shipping. And one of the sweetest little vignettes I've read. The thing with RD innuendoing more details about NMM than seems to be canon pre-s1e1 was the only bit to bug me.
