The Everfree forest.
It is a blemish upon the beautiful face that is Equestria. They say that it is a land shrouded in chaos, where the plants, the weather, and the denizens of the forest themselves all act on their own accord. It is commonly regarded as a place of evil, for the natural laws of Equestria do not apply to it.
While most tend to steer clear of the accursed forest, one too many accidents within it have prompt the need to finally remove the Everfree once and for all. The princesses, in response to the request of ponies as well as their own opinions, have opted to have every inch of the Everfree cut down for the creation of a new settlement on the grounds of environmental preservation and research.
It has been three months since a logging crew had been dispatched to deal with the problem. Most of the team never returned to report their progress, and those who have were forever haunted by what they had experience...

while most Everfree creature (Manticores, Cockatrices, Hydras and even Ursas) have at least some level of sentience the Timberwolves are nothing but brutal, unbridled instinct. Possibly due to the fact that they are at least part plant.

I mean he is the embodiment of chaos and was around long before the ponies, just like what the mushroom said about the Everfree, and once Discord was imprisoned well, all that chaos magic had to collect somewhere right?

If you are planning to re -write the whole thing, please try to change some of the... less desirable aspects of the fic: anvilicious green aesop, giving ponies the idiot ball, OC Twilight, guardians of the forest acting and chatting like your average jerk neighbour, etc...
Please, try to expose both sides, Civilization vs Nature, in a more Grey vs Gray morality perspective perspective, you know, Mononoke style.

Keep up the flow of the story. Twilight, being self righteous which is understandable for pony xenophobes. The fact that they also have different views on the forest is acting a a barrier for quick understandings. For the ponies to understand the situation here, they must see it through the effects that they are inducing from their acts to the animals. The ponies have lived life controlling the aspects of nature, mostly. And thinking that non-sentient life forms needs help and domestication because they do not understand the nature of... Well, balance of nature. The ponies will merely put the blame on 'the forest being evil because it's an unknown' because it is, for them. They have lived in an environment where everything has pony all over it. Down with pony over self righteousness complex.

I personally think this should be a "Fault of Pride" story. The fact that Ponies believe themselves to be the ones who can dictate what Nature can and cannot do. By attacking the Everefree they attack the planet's will and soon this causes them to suffer. They slowly begin to lose their ability to control nature, weather, and even the sun and moon. Disease, famine, creatures, the weather all cause Equestria to suffer as lives are lost and Twilight becomes obsessed with destroying the Everfree only to lose in the end. In the end, nature takes control of itself again and ponies are forced to adapt to a world where their magic no longer controls everything.
