It seems I have underestimated Rarity to some degree. I knew she was making a dress for Twilight but I did not expect something so plain. I expected an impractical riot of colors that seems to be the height of fashion in Celestia’s court yet what she made was simple and practical. It is perfect for a pony so… academic as Twilight.
It may seem a simple gesture but amongst these ponies there is no such thing. A dress is not simply a dress it is a statement about the pony wearing it and in this case the pony who made it. Rarity risked all the popularity and position she had gained these past few days to give her friend something she would truly appreciate rather than something that would increase her own popularity.
A few well-placed words and Twilight’s dress goes from being a ‘commoner’s’ attire to the height of fashion and Rarity is flooded with orders for them. If these nobles truly are so weak willed perhaps this Fancy Pants can be recruited to discourage some of their more grating habits.

I probably won't update again until next Monday, I've been out of town visiting people and i don't always have an internet connection.

Rarity isn't about flashy (although that's her personal 'muse'); she's about making ponies look beautiful. She can do that any way she likes but she has the ability to capture the character of the wearer. You only have to look at the gala dresses to see proof of that.
Luna is jealous.
She wants a dress now.
One to go with her SOCKS she is famous for.
3703783 Thanks for all your comments, instead of hunting them all down and replying individually I'll do them all here starting with this chapter's comment and working my way back.
These last three chapters have been referencing the episode Sweet and Elite and in it the dress Rarity designs for Twilight looks like this

However she is too overworked from all her social appearances to finish anything but the first layer of it which Twilight sees and thinks is her finished dress.
Discord is a really interesting character because he seems to be just short of all powerful(Even the vines he planted handled Celestia and Luna pretty easily). It seems to me that the only way he lets Celestia and Luna or the mane 6 ever stand a chance is because it's more fun that way, and well it's not really chaos unless there's a chance he could lose.
I didn't imagine what he did to Luna as a 'reset' so much as a 'restore'. he restored her body to it's true form(what we see in Luna Eclipsed) and he was in the middle of "restoring" her memory where he forced her to relive her entire existence and laughed at each moment of pain.
So far the characterization of Celestia in this has been challenging to me. this fic isn't an ideal medium for conveying it because it's filtered through Luna's perceptions. I still see her as the grand schemer but a thousand years ago amidst one of her "chess games" her queen was taken, not by some errant pawn she lost track of but because she used her sister as a game piece instead of paying attention to her as a pony(at least that's how she sees it). Her ability to plan has only gotten better but her confidence and willingness in using Luna is shattered.
Hope this clears some stuff up for you. Thanks for reading and commenting
(I've always liked Fancy Pants. He's upper-class, he's elite, and he's aristocratic. But he isn't a weak-willed fake and he isn't arrogant about it. He's polite, he's well-spoken, and he doesn't dismiss ponies. He does not automatically assume that they are less than him, or unimportant, like is so typical of people with power and privilege. So yes. Luna SHOULD recruit Fancy Pants, or at least spend some time with him. Even if he's not a warrior, he strikes me as honorable, and a stallion of his word.)
