MalWinters

An online test told me I had met myself once but that we're not very close.

T

She was just trying to do her job: sell some tomatoes and get enough bits to meet her deadlines. But after being cheated into selling her tomatoes at a lower price by a certain pink pony, Roma's afternoon does nothing but go downhill.

How can a mare cope when her life is falling apart around her ears?

Can I have some tips on details and stuff.
I'm new to writing my little pony fiction :3
:raritywink:

Loved it!

I Have Read This Thing!

And It Was Good. :yay:

This story popped up just as I was thinking about this episode and how Pinkie and Rarity might have had lasting effects from what Fluttershy said to them. I never even thought about it from the POV of the tomato mare. You did a really good job of displaying her problem and making your reader look at the situation from a new light. Good job!

Thank you all for your kind words!

I really enjoyed being able to try and figure out why this surly produce salesmare acted the way she did.

Am I the only one who upon seeing the title immediately thought of the old song by semi-sonic?

You don't have to go home but you can't stay here :raritywink:

As I am decently aware of classic alternative I can say that may be slightly intentional. Undoubtedly not the only hidden nod in my works but I try to not make them obvious.

So basically it boils down to this:

-all the farmer ponies in Ponyville are good at farming, but bad at marketing. Ditto on properly pricing their products.

-Pinkie Pie has the ability to make any good food look irresistable, a skill she demonstrated in MMMystery on the Friendship Express.

-pony economics is weird and can screw anypony over. Seriously? "You hear about this happening to ponies, but never to one you know." Sounds kind of disturbing.

But in the end, a good heart and a good sense of marketing go a long way. Guess Roma's lucky her tomatoes really are just that good. Makes me wonder how she got in that mess in the first place.

Anyway, heartwarming fic, nice expansion of the world, good look into Pinkie logic. I like it .

No. Saw the title and the song has been stuck in my head ever since, so I decided to come read the fic instead of passing it over.

Well that was a read worth getting a song stuck in my head.

Aaaaah, too much realism! It's funny how economics is sort of glossed over when it comes to Equestrian exposition. Adult problems like this rarely seem to show up in kids shows, probably because they'd have to cover all the background of how a system designed to promote fair contributions to society ends up so skewed as to semi-arbitrarily bring about ruination. Hold on while we explain why all these services and systems are in effect and why you have to sell so many tomatoes a day to keep up with the rent (wait let's explain that too) on your market stall. Which makes it surprising (perhaps not that surprising) that MLP actually enters this territory at least once, in Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, where it's stated that the apple family would "lose the farm" if they agreed to a 3:1 split with the Flim Flam brothers. (Holy what, who do they owe so much money to? Since when was Sweet Apple Acres so dangerously close to insolvency? Hasn't this farm been in the family for generations?) Anyway, I feel it's kinda cheap to rely on adult knowledge of adult problems like this to sell a character. You could argue that it's not really necessary to understand all this gunk to get the story, it's just obvious she needs money, right? But that isn't really true here, since it is necessary to understand most of her actions, including why she's so ashamed of her problems, why she won't accept help, and the nature of the pinkie's solution being advertising.

That isn't to say this didn't strike a chord with me though. Quite the opposite. I was surprised how quickly you made me care about Roma, despite the fact that I consider the overly proud beggar situation kinda cliche, and she's a (formerly nameless) background character who opens the story being by being downright violent. I like how the first few lines really bring out that feeling of frustration. It's one thing to have a pony buck something in frustration, but to try to and miss, and miss again, that just ices the cake, and gives you an taste of the kind of day they're having.

Too bad quality doesn't sell itself, but at least Pinkie's here to teach us all the importance of a brilliant marketing campaign to solve all your problems! :pinkiehappy:

Speaking of Pinkie, contraptionological Pinkie is super fun. Have you read Contraptionology!?

Had this on my read-later list, like, forever, and now after being finally done with my october contest entry, I finally took the time. Can't say I'm disappointed, really nicely done! Especially the dialogue and the way Roma increasingly lost control of her emotions. I also liked your characterization of Pinkie Pie.

I can't help but think that Pinkie's marketing scheme worked a bit too well (I mean, as a baker it's not like she's the legume connoisseur extraordinaire and can therefore speak from authority), but that's why it's fiction.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in the next contest again as a rival.:rainbowdetermined2:

Well, that was an interesting exploration of a minor character... and I really liked Pinkie's final idea.

I love this! I love stories about background ponies and their lives. Well done!

The economics of the market are probably amazingly complicated, and all the marketponies have to make constant adjustments to their prices. Especially those who sell stuff with a limited shelf life.

This story is horribly underrated! It's awesome!

7154224 Couldn't agree more, it deserves at least 100 upvotes. Pinkie's proclamation of "You mad genius!!" Could be about the author themselves. :pinkiehappy:

Wait, what? You’re bailing on Lemon’s party?

I would too, the last one I went to was an experience I'd rather forget. Also, Raindrops is a bitch!!!

Oh, congrats on winning the contest:raritywink:
