Spike and Twilight have a strong friendship, more so than any of her other friends. They have been with each other since she hatched him as a young filly.
Now, Twilight is an Alicorn, thinking about all of what her friends have done to bring her where she is now, and when Spike crosses her mind, she thinks back to when they first got to know each other—when an amazing friendship started between unicorn and baby dragon. She soon realizes just how much he meant to her.

I need to read this soon... that picture is adorable.
I know when I went to watch Equestria Girls, the first thing I watched for was whether or not Spike would still be sleeping in the same bedroom as Twilight. They were, and my fear that they would be drifting apart, or that the writer's would just forget about Twilight's relationship to Spike, was somewhat abated.
This story does a good job of separating the two distinct time periods. I could really sense the way that Twilight was back to being her old, bookish, distant self in the scenes in the past, and her more mature self in the present. The canon, if that's what we're calling EqG, may have played a little havoc with the central narrative of this work, but the core tenets remain visible and strong.
I do have one question, though. When they first meet at the train station, Spike doesn't return Twilight's hug. Why is that? Spike is the "huggiest" character in the series, and there's no pony he's hugged more than Twilight. It just struck me as a little odd.
I'm glad that you took some time to explore the SpiLight dynamic, the canon's most important relationship. I'd love to see more of such explorations in your future works.

I haven't written Spike much, as he isn't exactly my favorite character (I had much sympathy with him when he became a mutt in EqG, however).
Looking at that now, I should have thought more about that. At one point it was because Twilight's hug seemed rather fast and desperate, he couldn't help but wonder if something was wrong. Of course, I didn't even look through this story with much thought except for anything my prereaders mentioned, so it's hard to tell. I'll change that one thing real quick. Thank you!

There are a handful of very minor errors (a missing word at one point, "use" instead of "used", and so on), so you may want to give it another read-through, but nothing big enough to keep it out of Twilight's Library. Well done.
