Just another University-edicated fanfiction writer who prefers the cheers and laughter of ponies to madness and sorrow.

A story giving my characters Golden Stare and Rosy Cranberry a little time in the sun.

Golden Stare and Rosy Cranberry, the front gate guards of Canterlot Palace, enjoy the pomp and honor of the Day of Remembrance, though this year Golden has a reason to feel a bit sad, though he will always try to hide it away.

(Memorial Day fic for the EqD prompt. Warning: Contains adorable romantic Colt Cuddling.)

to nearly conquered. to nearly conquer.

Celestial laughed. Celestia...

A worthy addition for Memorial Day.

Thank you. I was afraid it would never got a comment.

Well it did kind of get hidden in all the shit that is the feed page.

2671698

And it got no love despite being linked from EqD.

That feed page is pretty crap, I agree.

2675625

Well to be honest, the EQD link was pretty terrible too, as it had no descriptions, just a list with links.

I feel the need to defend it, not on any rational grounds but because my friend made that post.

Oh, it gave it some exposure, but unless you knew the author you'd be unlikely to investigate further.

They always send the Deputy, the Cult-Finder General himself is never seen anymore.

Because he's busy being played by Vincent Price.

Heh. Good catch. The Cult-Finder General actually put himself in prison because of a magical curse. Also, the Office is far more legitimate because the cults are actually dangerous.

I always enjoy M/M shipping between the palace guards. It's clear you have a lot of knowledge of - I'm guessing Roman? - military terms. You should write more stories for this pair or at least an addendum to this story. Nice job.

Not quite Roman. There are several Latin titles but also two classical French ones reflecting how old and formal the Guard system is. It gets more complicated through my collaborator Kipakuta.

Honestly I would love to do more but other story points force me to keep these characters as funny background guys.

I think it is a lovely story. My neighbor served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and he saw a lot of his comrades die in combat. You mentioned in the comments that the Cult finder General put himself in prison. He wouldn't happen to be the same stallion who taught Bad Apple and gave him his first admonishment to be good?

The very same. Crescent Sliver. Lover of Celestia and self-imprisoned Cult-Finder General.

How did he become cursed? Is there a story?

9111975
It's an early concept that lingered. It's based on another early idea of wild talents, skills that ponies are born with outside of their pony race. Ditzy Doo has mana-sensitive situational awareness, socially speaking. Pinkie reads traces indicating future events. Fluttershy has earth pony animal affinity. Bad Apple has contact sensitivity for the number seven. And he has the one cursed skill, implied to have been something Discord cursed on the world. He also keeps himself sealed because that way he'll be safe. The longer he lives the longer it's kept bound up in him and doesn't force a painful choice on the crowns.

I feel sorry for Celestia. Both she and Luna had to sacrifice their lovers for the good of Equestria. Do the guards even know who he is, or do they just look on him kindly as a villain trying to do what is right?

9112068

Yes, they know. They know who he is, why he's there, and have an inkling of how much he means, like how Lime, Golden and Rosy know what Bad Apple is all about.
