For those who are still waiting patiently for my next fic - Love-Locked and Breathless, featuring you and The Great and Powerful Trixie - just letting you know I’m heading full-steam ahead for the ending… but the thing is, I’m at a cross-roads here. Both of them seem like great ideas, but I don’t know which route to follow. That’s where you guys come in.
Down one road, I could add the sensual scene. It’s hot. It’s heavy. It’s sexy. It would be rated Mature, and certainly would not make for public viewing. It may take a while longer for the fic to come out, plus it will wind up with the mature rating, but at the end of the day it’s a nice and… enjoyable end for the Crowley-type fic we all know and love.
Down the other road, I could remove the sensual scene, leaving just the story. And with this, the chance to get one of my works featured on Equestria Daily. I hope. As such, it wouldn’t be as sexy (what with, you know, the glaring lack of sex) and it would be moved down to a Teen rating. If it all works out, the feature would help me attract more of an impact on the general Brony community, and cross off an item “brony wish list”, which it getting featured on EqD. Trust me, I know there are “Moral fags” there, but that’s not all of them. But I’d be toning it down nonetheless.
I can’t make this choice by myself, which is why I’m turning to only my trusted fans in Crowley’s Shippingverse. What do you guys think I should do here? Remember, I’ll be considering more well thought-out answers than “DO SUCH-AND-SUCH PLZ PLZ PLZ!!1!”.
I'd considered that, but I fear they'd use the add-on as a means to reject it as Equestria Daily material. Plus, the story would have to be labelled Mature with the add-on, as per site rules, and woulld therefore make it unqualified for EqD material in the first place...
Well, put it this way. Lets say you took out the Clop and got it on EQD. Then some peeps decide "hmm, that was some nice shipping. I should check the author out on FimFic- OH MY GOD SO MUCH PLOT WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN"
If you changed your story to align with EQD's guidelines, would it still be like your stories? And the kind of audiences you'd attract, would you want them?
I'm afraid this would go much like what happened to the Yogscast. They did plenty of nicely done vids on WoW and other awesome games. Then they did a Let's Play of Minecraft that eventually turned into The Shadow of Israphel (a gigantic tale with a massive story, set in a huge world).
This was great for the channel, as they got hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
But now there are hundreds of thousands of "fans" who call for more SoI. Every video of theirs that isn't SoI contains vast quantities of hateful, poorly written demands for more Minecraftian antics. It's getting to ridiculous levels now.
BUT
(and this is a Big But (the best kind of But))
If you think you could keep this story clean without removing what makes it yours, if you think you could do this and be ready to cater to the kind of reader such a story would attract, then I say give it a shot.
But hey, I'm an overly-critical, cynical Scotsman. What do I know?
I've seen the pre-readers for Equestria Daily voice their disdain for anything written in second-person on more than one occasion, so I don't know if it would be a good idea to try and pander to them. I even attempted to send one of my stories to them several months ago, and they flat-out told me in the email that they don't really take those kinds of fics.
And I think that's okay. EQD readers have their own standards and preferences, and so does FiMFiction. You're obviously thriving here and you make it clear to readers what they're getting into when they read a Crowley story, so I say just go for the sensual scene. It's worked wonders for you so far.
Plus I love me some of dat plot, but at the end of the day you are the one that has to make the decision of which path to take, we're just here to tell you you're awesome.
That makes sense, I guess. But don't forget, they've accepted second-person stories at least twicebefore, and even threw a borderline clopfic up there once. I figure I should at least try. Who knows, they might have different pre-readers accepting different things? I might get lucky.
Okay! How about this new and improved plan of action, guys? I'll make and complete the Teen rated version, and send it to EqD. If it gets through, woo hoo, achievement unlocked, I can die a happy man/pony/griffin/whatever. If it's knocked back, I'll "mourn" my inability to get it on EqD by updating it with an... extra chapter, if you know what I mean...
I believe the first second-person fic you listed as well as the borderline clopfic went up before EQD even began using pre-readers, or if they were, then their standards weren't as high as they are now. Brony Hero of Equestria is a recent fic, but it's also a choose-your-own-adventure story, which is what about 90% of all professionally published second-person stories are.
You can still try to submit your story to them, but all I'm saying is don't expect much.
To be honest, i can't really decide either! but as i've read all these previous opinions, i could too agree with both paths to take.
You have already reached your own style, and if you'd like to change it a bit for a chance to be featured on EQD, i think it's a totally great idea to welcome new and possibly interested fans of such "new" style, and might (or not) even like the typical Crowley-fic. Like what happened with me, i totally despised clopfic, until i've read "Spreading Your Wings and Hers", and it has actually changed my point of view on such writers, and, until now, you're the only one of those whom i actually stand (and like) reading.
But you don't actually need to change your style (even if it is for a fic or two) for people to know you. You can always keep it your way, and people will eventually seek for your work as they'd slowly hear from your great job on all of these.
With this being said, i support SLIGHTLY more the idea of removing the scene (if it is just for this one fic) so you could get a chance. We don't even know if you'd get it, but it's worth the try, no? you could even maybe write both versions, and somehow link us to the other version a little bit after the possible EQD feature (yeah, i'm sure you might get it :b).
And with this, i go i'm also sure you'll take the right decision as smart, reasonable people will comment this thread.
Personally, I wouldn't put anything of value on any given fic making EqD, what with their (apparent) arbitrary as hell approval system. If you really want to go for it, and you can do it without bastardizing your own work, that's your call.
However, if you go for the Teen version and get it approved, could you still post a completely unrelated *wink wink, nudge nudge* one-off chapter somewhere for the rest of us?
I've been thinking about that. You know how you can view unpublished works via getting a link and (sometimes) entering a password to view it? I'm thinking of leaving the "Clop" chapter intentionally unpublished, and a week or so later I'll post a link to it where you have to enter the password to read it (the password would be given out too, and would be something along the lines of "I willingly want to read this clop chapter" or something.
My master plan is a work in progress.
EDIT: Or, if that changes the whole thing to Mature as a result, published or not, I can simply make a side-story marked Mature with the scene in it.
Easiest solution I can think of is to leave the sex scene out and post it later as a new story, maybe with password protect on.
Although I wouldn't put too much faith in EqD... from everything I've heard from authors on this site, the pre-reading system is a lifelike re-enactment of life in Nazi Germany and about 2 fics in every gazillion get submitted, and even then they have to adhere to some pretty narrow guidelines.
About half of admins on Eqd are only intrested in stuff there used to and the other half will only take the words of their friends, so unless you have at least one friend there, I highly doubt you'd be able to get that featured, thats just how Eqd works. That being said, I give you all my luck and hope you succed, you are a great author and I look forward to any more 2nd person storys with rainbow, that is a GREAT series.
Sorry you didn't make it. I thought it was one of your better fics (although Her Whole Darn Heart is still my personal favorite). The extra chapter was tastefully done, too.
So, did they give you any useful criticism, or was it all "eww second-person shipfic, get it away!!!11one"?
To be fair, they gave me a few pointers I plan to use in future fics. For example, there's a lot of talking in some chapters that set the scene, like when they first meet and when they're in the pub together. They said, rather than just explaining it through idle talk and words, it's better to show the reader than tell. I'll take that to heart. But they were still to intimidated by 2nd person let it through to the "second round" of pre-readers. Yes, there's apparently a round of pre-readers before you qualify for it to be read by pre-readers. Like... pre-pre-readers!
>>357418357418 Then under that pinkie logic, you will eventually be hacked if you send stories to EqD, so that they can pre-pre-pre-read your fic before you can send it off.
I think if you make it mature (which I would prefer) Equestria Daily and Equestria After Dark would probably accept it. Equestria Daily allowed Swag.MOV anyway, and Equestria After Dark is basically porn. Ask TAW for Equestria After Dark.

Why not remove the sensual scene, but have it as an add-on? Post it separately, but link it in the original fic, for those who will.
Best of both worlds methinks

Why not just release your toned down teen rated story on EqD, then when you post it here have the explicit chapter exclusive to FimFiction..?
It might be a tiny bit more work on your part but it would make everyone happy. I suppose.

Go for it if you want, I just want to be able to read the full version somehow; you've teased me with this story idea for too long.
I also wanted to add, that borderline clop fic is Butters' and I'm not aware of any clopfic writer with a higher profile than her.
