To all new and recently joined members: keep thread notifications on. We make ALL of our announcements through threads, so you need to keep up to date with upcoming changes or possible changes. Same goes for checking the Main Proofreader Doc.

Some things you might want to know before hiring your first Proofreader: Advice

Have any questions about the group? Visit the Proofreader Group Help Desk!

Please read our instructions as thoroughly as you expect someone to read your story.

This group is dedicated to providing an easy-to-use method for authors to contact proofreaders or readers. In this group and our docs, authors may find a wide variety of proofreaders willing to help out and ensure a high quality story. These proofreaders can help you go into your story, correct any and all errors they manage to catch (like an editor), as well as offer you their thoughts and opinions on your story (like a prereader). However, we do not simply post your story and hope for the best. You get to decide who you allow access to your story. Our very detailed directory of proofreaders is located here in a single doc where we do the vast majority of our actions, changes, and updates. Make sure you Star/Favorite this doc in your Google Drive!

RULES:

1. No harassing any users at any time for any reason. This is not tolerated under any circumstance and YOU WILL BE REMOVED from this group, its documents and an instant ban without warning.

2. No creating threads without explicit permission from  Meeester or arandompenguin. PM one of us with your request for a thread to be made. If a proofreader from our docs cannot fulfill your request, it may deserve a thread.

3. No defacing or deleting of an author's story/chapter under any circumstance. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the admins. Authors are reminded to contact an admin immediately with any complaints about a proofreader.

Golden Rule: Even if it's not in the rules, Admins decide what to do with this group and its relating features. Should we decide something, that is final. This means we can kick you for any reason, and we can change the rules or make exceptions to them as we see fit. If you disagree with our decision, PM us, or you could always report us to the site-admins).

How to find a proofreader:

Step 1. Go to the Main Proofreader Doc for a list of proofreaders to choose from. Do NOT make a thread without PMing an admin first. The proofreader doc has a 2nd set of instructions there as well.

Step 2. Find a proofreader whose notes section matches your story type** and send them a request containing the name of your story and any scheduling information.

Step 3. If they accept, send them a link to a copy of your story. Please remember that, while we do take precautions, we cannot fully guarantee the safety of your story and recommend having a back-up file (gdocs has a very handy "Revision History" tool to help with this). If they do not accept, go back to Step 1.

Step 4. Once the proofreader has finished, send a PM to Meeester with the name of the proofreader, your story title, and any/all feedback you have. Please include any complaints you have as well so that we may act accordingly.

How to become a proofreader:

Possible Proofreaders: When you join, please fill out the application located in this Google form after reading the following information:

1. Take this seriously. Use your best grammar and act professional in your notes. More descriptive notes will give authors a good idea of what you are like before they even send you your first PM. Also make sure your profile page is neat and tidy, including your bio and other things, as serious authors will often look at those to get more information on you that isn't often provided by your notes.

2. We can and will refuse your application if you do not display at least common courtesy, and authors may report you for being very impolite.

3. Read everything in the Proofreader Document! It has a lot of information listed on it that you should know, much of which is not listed here. It is suggested that you read all the information on that document before sending in your form. If it isn't in the FAQ, it is probably in that doc. READ THIS DOCUMENT

Once you have filled out the Google Form and read through all the information (no skimming please!), start looking for stories that you want to proofread! Be proactive and PM authors of stories you follow/read that you think could use some help, but be polite about this!

Note to Proofreaders: Remember, you never have to work for/help an author that PMs you if you don't want to. Whether you don't have the time or the story/author is offensive to you, it is still your decision to help or not. You aren't obliged to do anything, as you are more than just a tool for any author to pull out for their fic.

Check out these two groups for help with honing your writing skills!

Author Support: A group for help on everything related to writing. Providing ready-made OCs, settings, plot advice, Mary Sue Avoidance guides, writing tips in general, and several other services such as a bi-weekly prompt event, AS is your one-stop shop  for near everything writing related.

The Writer's Group: Completed your story, but don't think you got enough exposure? Want a chance at getting featured on a front page somewhere? The Writer's Group is your chance to give your fic that extra bit of exposure it needs. Here, you may self-promote yourself to your heart's desire!

Need something that isn't MLP Fanfiction proofread?

Shoot a PM to either Meeester or arandompenguin and we'll talk to you about creating a Special Request Thread (SRT). While we cannot guarantee anyone will take your job, of the 1200+ people in this group, it might be worth trying. Just be aware we are not responsible for who you select (of those who volunteer) to proofread.

Yo yo, what's up my bros? I've been writing a story for a few months now, and due to not having time, I've only just finished the second chapter and was wondering if anyone would like to proofread it for me.

All recommendations and feedback from the past 9 weeks added to the profiles/proofreaders they concerned.

And with that, we are 99% caught up on all of our work/maintenance for the group! All that's left are the usual comments in the docs from the past week.:yay:

I'm not natural english talker, could someone be willing to proofread just to make the story to sound more natural? I don't really care for gramatical perfection, just that people don't jump through the window by reading something too illogical. :raritycry:

Special Request by EldritchSpires. I am on the look-out for an editor again for a few short pieces of work connected with my main universe (the Yadith-verse). Any interested should probably try to have cursory understanding of its background in the main story "The Shadows of Yadith"- mainly the first chapter or alternately reading to/on the section on the "Fall of Thurim", which will give you a taste of what one of the coming stories is to be like.

Furthermore, the editor must have at least a passing understanding of the Lovecraftian/Cthulhu Mythos on which to draw upon.

The first story is a two parter of approximately 4000 words per chapter. The second will be a multi-chapter story of about 2000-3000 words per chapter. The First story is more associated with the "Dream Cycle" of the Mythos and the other is more like the works of Lovecraft "Re-animator" and "From Beyond".

Please send a message if interested.

To anyone who is even considering going to Everfree Northwest this July, I highly recommend it! There will be a huge assortment of fanfiction events/panels filled with authors and other prominent members of the brony fanfic community. There is something for every writer, editor, or pre-reader/proofreader at this con, so I hope some people from this group go!

While not prominent, I will be attending the con to sit in on a few panels as well as staffing EFNW in Logistics.

I'm flying all the way from Atlanta to Seattle for this! What's your excuse? :trollestia:
