Okay everypony, listen up! I'm tired of seeing all these fics being posted that don't seem to have a single particle of true creativity in them. I think I've seen more than 3 halo-MLP crossovers today alone! This thread will now act as a list for the stories you think have been done too many times.
Note: HiE does not count, as it is a genre, and I have seen very original HiEs. If your going to complain about HiE, only list one aspect of HiE that has been done too much (Example: "I think that having the human adopt Scootaloo has been done way too many times")
Disclaimer: this is not to say the ideas are necessarily BAD. It just means that they have been done so often that you should probably think very carefully before executing it. They can be done, but unless done very well, then you will probably annoy a few readers.
I don't know, but I like any ship that can be done well. I'm a sucker for romance stories. Honestly, if we have more male choices, we could have more M/F ships, than just F/F.
Cliche or not, if the next few chapters turned out to be different, then I'll more than likely to go for it.
Okay, time for me to complain on the several points of HiE that keep popping up in a lot of them I read. HiE writers? Listen up!
-Scootaloo being adopted has been done so many damn times that I find myself wanting to strangle many of the authors (Coal Buck is the only person I have read who even managed to pull it off well. Kudos to him, by the way)
-Ponified humans. Damnit, how many times is this going to be done? It practically defeats the purpose of having a human. Practically. You can still pull it off well, but I suggest not even trying it. Unless you do something original with it. What can you do that's original about a pony human? Be creative and at least don't make them a permanent pony.
-Sad/Tragic pasts. The human always seems to have a sad or tragic path. This wouldn't be bad if many of you could at least pull it off well. But most HiEs do not pull the tragic past part off. They either make it too sad, or not sad enough, or use it as a manipulation factor for the human to use.
-Portals, spells, and the Everfree Forest. That's always how the human seems to be brought to equestria. They almost always start out in the Everfree Forest. And the human is almost always A) Devising a portal to bring themselves to Equestria or B) Twilight or Celestia use a spell. Again, this can still be done and be original, but you'd be hard pressed.
-one human. It's almost always just a single human that gets brought to Equestria. I have rarely seen a fic that brings more than 1. In fact, the only two fics I can think of that bring more than one are What If: My Second Life, and A Whole New World. I don't count "Human" because that is too epic of a fic to be brought into the HiE genre. Whatever on that. I don't care what you think.
-Mane Six Shipping. Yes, I know, this can be done well. I've seen it pulled off very well in many fics. But I've seen it done badly in many others. I have a suggestion here. Has anyone thought of shipping the human with a background character? How about Luna or Celestia? Come on! There are more than six characters for the human to date, ya know!
that's all my gripes for now. I think it was fairly sufficient.
Building on that HiE theme, a large number of the fics I've read have
a) the human being perfectly ok with this strange land and being turned into a pony (where applicable)
b) the ponies themselves coming to be perfectly ok with the human existing
c) both
They can be done well, for sure. I just see so many humans fitting into Equestria so cleanly. Why don't we have more stories where the human is persecuted or captured as a rare animal?
Personally, I'm pretty mellow when it comes to popular plot ideas and overused tropes. If an author can find some way to reel me in without the story turning into a predictable snore-fest, then that's all the better.
However, I cannot stand stories that involve anything to do with that infamous gore-fest of a fanfiction "Cupcakes". Never mind the fact that I already have a good bit of bias against the original story (with all due respect to the author, of course). I just really resent all of these stories that turn Pinkie into a psychotic murderer. Can it be done correctly? Sure! But the sad truth is that most of the time it follows that same, tired formula that its clones have, and that makes for a sad Pinkie.
-Over powered Twilight is one that im either hot or cold with, if its like Moonstone Cup, Immortal Game, Grimiore, or several other good fics where she is powerful because:
1) She's twilight and is only getting powerful to rise to challenges via exploring her potential
2) Because of circumstances and prior skill (or change in persona), but new applications plus a few power ups see-immortal game moonstone cup CRISIS: Equestria and Is immortality worth it?.
3) Because she is taught by someone-see Grimiore.
Thats fine, but when Twilight just come out the box overpowering everyone and fighting Alicorns we have a problem.
-Humans in equestria being bronies.
- Dark/grimdark fics that dont paint a picture what makes me care. A grimdark world where everything sucks is all fine and dandy but at least hint that it was at one time better, or there is a nearly unobtainable way to make it better that tempts everypony. I just cant connect with a world where everything is bad, has always been bad, and theres no hope for anything better. The real world is extremely grimdark but the earth isnt a lifeless wasteland where everyone is sad and angsty all day and perform evil acts because they can.
As do I, actually have yet to see them have one where celestia or luna is the "antagonist" yet she isnt evil so much as she is grey , not so much moral less as see is willingly to bear great sins for the good of equestria.
I agree with your stance on Cupcakes. If I may be so bold as to further expand on that idea...
I hate all these authors that take an (in)famous fic, like Cupcakes or My Little Dashie, and just rewrite it with another character. I've seen Cupcakes a number of times, but with Rarity or Fluttershy snapping and killing everyone instead, and My Little Twilight or My Little Celestia. They almost never bring anything new to the table, and I find it tedious to read the same story twice.
Building on that idea further, I'm not a fan of sequels written by other authors. If the original author wants to write a sequel to Cupcakes, more power to him. But I have seen no less than 15 unofficial sequels to Cupcakes, only 2 of which were even worth looking at. There may be more out there that I'm subconsciously avoiding.
I don't mind clopfics. I even read a couple here and there. But I do hate how they get a disproportionate amount of views, considering how short they are.
One Final Letter to Celestia Fics (I actually have an idea that would break from the norm but I had to cut it off halfway, was way too depressing for me, worried for my sanity xD)
You know what would be interesting that I haven't seen? A love triangle. Or cube. Or hexagon. Whatever, you get the idea. Then again, maybe I've just seen too many romcoms...
I swear that if I see one more bad story of a human turned alicorn, I will rip my fucking hair out and beat the nearest person to death with my rolling chair.
HiE soldiers/warriors. It's overused, it's outdone by other genres, it's boring! I have only read two legitimate stories like these, I have forgotten the names of and to favorite both of them, and I only remember the author of one (Cancel Sanity, kudos to you, man). Honestly, these are always the same. I find myself reading as many as I can to find one that isn't! I'm sorry, writers who do these, but it's depressing. It really is. I'm not saying you guys are bad writers (alright, most of you are, but I won't hold that against you), but he simple fact that you are trying to write one of these causes me to lose faith in you! So please, if you can't do it, and you know you can't, then just stop. If you want to improve your writing skills with one, then do it in private, have someone review it for you, critique it, and then don't post it here. Post it anywhere but here. Please, I beg of you.

I personally find there to be too many one of the mane six or celestia being secretly evil.
I think really bad self insertion stories are overdone.
And also some aspect of military ponies
