Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are widely considered to be goddesses incarnate of Equestria. But goddesses have entities they must answer to. A thousand years ago, Celestia was challenged by one of these entities for the fate of her domain. She won, but at a terrible cost.

Now, the Game begins again, with Twilight Sparkle and her friends caught in the middle.

While re-shelving books at the library, Twilight discovers a journal she gave to Spike years ago contains stories about the great dragon hero Captain Invincible, who fights for Truth, Justice, and the Equestrian Way, defending the city of Ponytopolis from the diabolical Dr. Spectra and other assorted dangers.

There's just two problems: Spike clearly wanted the stories to be kept private, and Twilight just can't stop reading them.

While Celestia runs the Day Court with the important business of keeping Equestria running smoothly, that leaves Luna to deal with the business of the Night Court. Sadly, this means dealing with those ponies and issues that could be charitably described as "nuttier than a fruitcake."

Such is the case when Princess Luna, her faithful court clerk Night Audit, and rookie night guard Star Cluster have to deal with a moose that unexpectedly arrives at Night Court just hours before an important ambassador is scheduled to arrive. Where did the moose come from? Why is it there? Will it stop eating all the royal ficuses? Will Celestia notice the chili powder in her toothpaste?

After an unplanned total eclipse of the sun, Fluttershy discovers an unusual plant and decides to take it home. But what she doesn't realize is that this plant could quite possibly spell the end of Equestria as we know it.

A magical mishap transports Twilight Sparkle and her friends through time into a dying future where Equestria has been conquered by a mysterious tyrant and some old friends and foes have adjusted to the new order. Now, they search for a way home, while finding out what has happened to their beloved homeland and maybe, just maybe, finding a way to prevent it from happening.
