Mewtwo, the strongest being in existence. A creature of unmatched power, a twisted product of science and mad ambition; now free from its former masters, it has only experienced defeat once: by the hands of a young human boy wearing a red hat. Now, he foresees the coming of a new trainer that could threaten his power, and he knows he cannot face it alone.

In Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle and her friends are investigating a mysterious magical signal that has been plaguing Unicorns all across Equestria for days. Instead of finding its source, however, they are drawn into a mysterious world by a strange, pale creature, and scattered to the winds one by one. Now they must find a way to survive in this strange world...and eventually, a way home.

In Johto, unnerving rumors of Team Rocket's resurgence bring unrest to the people, and three mysterious beasts roam the land. Meanwhile in Kanto, the legendary birds grow wary, and its ever watchful Gym Leaders are starting to realize not all things are as they may seem.

In Canterlot, Celestia will soon be informed that all the six Element bearers have mysteriously gone missing...

And in Pallet Town, Professor Oak is about to get a call from his grandson about the discovery of a strange, new Pokémon species.

The memory-links of the Changelings pass entire lives down from queen to queen, but every last hiveling has parts of her ancestors' memories inside her from the day she's born. Many are different, entirely unique to every last recorded thought; some are more common, essential parts of the changeling lore.

And then there are the Mercurial Archives; the bright, shining lights of history that every single changeling knows to heart. They are stored in every hive, and flow in the souls of every single individual like the blood in their veins and the quicksilver in their skin - some old, some new, and some predating the very existence of their species. This very first memory is where our story shall begin.

ARCHIVE #0 - In times ancient, before the founding of Equestria itself, the realms of the pony races were splintered and filled with conflict and mistrust. In all of this, the young Princess Mercuria is forced to make a hard decision. Should she follow her passion and dedication to magic and her master, duke Starswirl the Bearded of Cante-Wirl; or should she follow the path of her sister, queen consort Argentine of Unicornia, and assist King Platinum in forging a nation out of the disparate territories of ponykind?

The Mercurial Archives are a backstory/in-verse backdrop to Wandering, and reading it is highly recommended. Details on connections between individual entries will be given in the author's notes for each chapter.

Moiraine Damodred, Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah, has successfully found the Dragon Reborn. Rand al'Thor, however, is not so keen on being part of Tar Valon's plots. Together with the Shienaran Lord Ingtar of house Shinowa and his twenty lances, as well as his friends Mat and Perrin, he leaves Fal Dara to hunt for the stolen Horn of Valere in the south - an ancient artifact that can summon the heroes of legend into battle, to aid the Light in the Final Battle.

Moiraine is left with her Warder, Lan, in the Borderlands to search for clues that can help her piece together the Prophecy of the Dragon. While crossing the border between Arafel and Kandor, however, she and Lan are attacked by a legion of Whitecloaks - a religious order who hold Aes Sedai for servants of the Dark, all and one. Having lost their horses, they are forced to split up.

The next morning, Moiraine finds herself far from the chilly northern summer of Kandor, awakening in a mysterious forest, far too warm to be anywhere near the Borderlands. Determined to find her way back home, she sets out yet again on the same mission she began so many years ago:

    Find Rand al'Thor.

And the Light help any who stand in her way...

In the land of the midnight sun, there are still untouched remnants of the ancient wilderness that once covered most of the North. A party of hikers in the Sarek National Park are stumped as one of their number is lost without a trace, and they have no clue as to how aside from the fact that the weather seems to be acting up a bit more than usual.

Meanwhile in Equestria, the Changeling invasion has just been thwarted, and Shining Armor and Cadence's spell has scattered the forces of the swarm all across the land. They are weakened by their defeat and completely lost in a lifeless wilderness, and Chrysalis fears the worst.

This would surely have come to pass, were it not for the appearance of the perhaps even more lost hiker in her camp - who now must deal best he can with a mysterious alien species, and an even more alien world.

Wandering builds on the backdrop of the Mercurial Archives, and reading that story alongside this one is highly recommended. Please refer to individual chapter author's notes for details.

Twilight discovers a strange set of bones in the ditch under the Ponyville clock tower. However, she has a conference to prepare - the Thaumic-Arcane Collegium of Academics, a great organization of scholars from around the world, has accepted her into their ranks, and she is to host their annual Grand Meet in Ponyville. She doesn't have time for research!

When the Meet commences, however, one of the Grandmasters has mysteriously gone missing. As the other attendants mold their confusion together, Twilight cannot help but feel something isn't quite right. And when she discovers the missing Grandmaster's carriage, empty and abandoned on the road right by the clock tower where she left the corpse, the hunt is on.

An old, foreign and forbidden existence is on the loose in Equestria, and Twilight is in a race against the clock to stop it. Can she reach it in time? Only time will tell.

    But whose time?

Princess Luna has nightmares. Terrible nightmares. More importantly, nightmares that come every single night and day and infallibly disrupts her sleep. Turned to an intake of sugar and caffeine that Pinkie Pie would've been proud of just to stay awake, she consults Celestia for a solution to her sleep problems - who presents her with an idea long abandoned as useless fringe pseudoscience by any respectable researchers: Astral projection.

But Celestia's solution, while close to the mark, doesn't quite do its job. Or, at least, doesn't manage to ONLY do its job. For Luna isn't the only one having nightmares...

Meanwhile, on Earth, the 17th century has recently gotten itself a fairly abrupt makeover, in the form of the misplaced 20th century West Virginian town of Grantville landing smack in the middle of Germany - along with hillbillies, admirals and a LOT of shotguns. Now, 3 years later, these elements have consolidated themselves with the local powerhouses in an alliance with Gustavus Adolphus Vasa, king of Sweden - who, with his up-time friends, have managed to grab a quite sizable chunk of land in Germany and name it the United States of Europe, subdue Denmark-Norway into a reestablished Kalmar Union, introduce airplanes, ironclads, and rate of fire to the battlefield; and piss off just about everyone else on the continent in the process. Needless to say, the 30 Years War just got a LOT more complicated.

When these elements are forced together by an ancient breed of chaos, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the results aren't far from a nightmare.

Meanwhile, Equestria has to deal with the absence of both their diarchs, a lost (human) princess, an entirely different breed of chaos; and of course, the inevitable fact that every single villain with a score to settle is going to come back for a second round.

Some of which not even the Norns can save them from...

    ---

This is a crossover between MLP and the Assiti Shards/1632 series by Eric Flint (which is a very good read on its own, and I much encourage you to read it), with some norse mythology and homegrown thrown in (I couldn't make it fit, so I made it Bigger). Timeline-wise, this story starts about a year after Discord pony-time/2 months after the Changeling invasion; and 2 months after the Battle of Copenhagen earth-time; August of Anno Domini 1634, 3rd year of the Ring of Fire / Month 8 of Harmony Era year 2. Call me extrapolating, but TIME ES MUI IMPORTANTE, friends.
