Inspiration is Rarity's Element, and Sweetie Belle her greatest achievement. But the filly has questions, ones that Rarity might not be able to answer on her own. What makes a pony? How can somepony know if they really are alive? Are they alive if they laugh and cry? Are they alive if they think, if they make mistakes and have ideas?

If Sweetie Belle is nothing more than a collection of wires, is she truly alive?

Twilight's fears over becoming a princess convince her to attempt a spell to glimpse the future. Unfortunately, she ends up doing a bit more than glimpsing; the spell turned out to be permanent, meaning she never returned back to her own time, and therefore didn't exist for ten full years.

Her absence caused a fall-apart of the elements of harmony, and Twilight is horrified to see how they've changed without her. She doesn't know how to teleport back, so she instead tries desperately to figure out what happened and piece everyone's lives back together.

Luna has taken a filly as student in magic.

But not everypony agrees with her choice when that filly is an earth pony.

She was a unicorn on the run.  Being hunted, her only option was to hide where they wouldn't think to look.  Once over the border she'd hide in the most quiet, boring, unassuming town she could find in Equestria.  Her information was out of date but how much could Ponyville have changed?

Once there all she'd have to do is keep her head down and not draw attention to herself.  Certainly stay away from any adventure or authority figures, top of which being the Princesses.  She'd shuddered to think what would happen if they found out who she really was.
