The ninth story in The Journey of Graves.

Graves is gone, departed for parts unknown without so much as a backwards glance.  A quick farewell and a cold goodbye is all the marshal left before severing every tie he ever had to Ponyville, including those with Rarity.

Why? He's a soldier and it was obvious he'd one day have to leave. But the way he left, so abruptly, even callously... it just doesn't seem right. Could it be that there's something more to his departure than meets the eye? Or are thoughts like that merely fancy and wishful thinking? To find the truth, Rarity and the girls start down a long, winding road that will hopefully bring the grey eyed soldier back. Hopefully.

My name is Artemis, I was sworn in as Princess Celestia's personal guard quite some time ago. I've watched her for so many years and silently stood by her side during all the recent ups and downs of her reign. Now I'm going to tell her how I feel. I know it would never work, we're just too different. But sometimes, there are things in a stallion's life he just has to do, and things he has to get off his chest.

Following the declaration of peace between Equestria and T'rahk Enox, the great changeling nation extended its reach to the other races. Though the gryphons quickly agreed to the treaty of peace, the black dragons of the north responded with anger. Unwilling to enter into an understanding with such weak creatures, the proud draconic race refused.

Six girls, some with wings, others with magic, a few with the strength to kick fruit out of trees, and one boy with a tendency to literally blow smoke. Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie have all been thinking about Spike lately. Some have normal reasons to be, but most of them don't seem to think about handling their thoughts in a normal way. And Spike is completely unaware of all of it, well, for the most part.

When a mishap occurs with Celestia's bathroom scale, an ancient protocol that may just doom Equestria is set into motion.  With the entire palace staff now conspiring against her, the sun goddess must not only contend mountains of paper work, dancing celery sticks, and steroid pumped stallions, but a sister who will take this chance to torture Celestia any way she can as payback for her banishment. Romance, palace intrigue, and swashbuckling adventure await our six heroines when Princess Luna summons the Elements of Harmony to Canterlot.

I started writing this story in the middle of March 2011 and submitted the last chapter and the epilogue to EqD 3 1/2 months later on July 4th.  The basic idea for it, though, had come to me after watching the first two episodes on YouTube at the beginning of that February, but it took me a month to discover there were places on the net to which a person could send fanfiction and have it posted.  I don't get out much, y'see...

The discerning reader may, therefore, find a bit of canon-fodder here and there, and for all that I've thought about diving back in and changing a few things to make the story line up better with Season 2, I'm not gonna.  For better or for worse, this story's done, and I hope to use what I learned while writing it and from the comments it's gotten--and the comments I reckon it'll get here--to make my next story better.
