Twilight is a Canterlot Orphan. Her parents mysteriously disappeared one day, and were announced dead in the line of duty for the Crown. Growing up as an Orphan has had its benefits, but now the young unicorn receives a surprise she had never expected: Princess Luna, the Immortal Ruler of Equestria, wants Twilight Sparkle as her personal protege. But not just any protege. Luna is grooming Twilight to become the next Valkyrie, an elite Mage who acts as Luna's right hoof. When Twilight discovers a long buried secret during her studies, the new Valkyrie is put to the test to find a way to prevent day from falling across Equestria-- Forever.

Professor Discord starts receiving unwanted attention from the new student of Celestial Academy, Twilight Sparkle. As Twilight spends her days trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the Draconequus, something watches from the shadows with malicious intent.

War threatens the nations, a Nightmare stalks the shadows, and Rainbow Dash's arrival has turned her into a wild card in a deadly game that pits the law on both sides of a broken Equestria against a mysterious criminal figure, Max Cash. Yet the stakes are higher than anyone knows, for in her research Twilight Sparkle discovered a dark secret about the Elements, something that will shake the foundations of the world.

On the night of her return from exile Nightmare Moon comes across resistance as she had expected. However she had a backup plan on hoof for just such a predicament, tearing off a small fraction of her soul and attaching it to the bearer of the element of magic. Now she must play the long game to ensure that she can obtain the loyalty of her new host and once more rise to power over Equestria.

However when Discord attacks the city of Canterlot during Twilight's Coronation Ceremony her world is turning into a living nightmare. With the death of her mentor at the hands (Paws?) of Discord she is forced into the Everfree, and to the ruined castle within. Her enemies are many and her allies are few, can Twilight and a mysterious pony named Octavian Nightingale restore Equestria to its former glory?
