When Twilight Sparkle is crowned the sole Princess of Equestria as the final step in her studies and the final step in symbolically unifying Day and Night, the Griffon Nation decides to take advantage of this once-in-a-millennium political transition to launch a full-scale invasion of Equestria's eastern coastline. Once the invasion is repelled after a few bloody weeks of fighting, Twilight faces pressure to launch a counter-invasion of the Griffon Nation, which she reluctantly agrees to do, along with enacting controversial wartime measures
Within months, these measures begin to take their toll on the Equestrian population, who begin to demonstrate against the measures and, by extension, against the Griffon War more generally. Initially ignored, these demonstrations become larger and more widespread, creating a major problem for Twilight, her generals, and the Equestrian war effort, and threatening to completely upend the social and political order by which Equestria operates.
