After Twilight Sparkle made her biggest secret public much earlier than she'd originally planned, the lives of the Element-Bearers and their closest friends somehow managed to become even more complicated than they already were. Yet despite the flurry of all of the added activity this brings, Princess Celestia decides to undertake a particularly ambitious project: the reformation of Discord. She delegates the task to Penumbra Noctis, who, more than anypony else, can empathize with the draconequus' situation, and who is therefore best suited to showing Discord the magic of friendship. On the surface, it's a very reasonable plan.

Unfortunately, Discord has never had much patience for reason.

This is the fifth and final story in The Petriculture Cycle. Reading the first four stories, which begin here, is highly recommended.

One week ago, Twilight Sparkle was crowned the fourth Princess of Equestria.  Tonight, Ponyville hosts the 1003rd Summer Sun Celebration, and Princess Celestia and Princess Luna want a vacation.  With two fine young princesses like Cadance and Twilight to take over for them, nothing could possibly go wrong.

Early one morning, Twilight Sparkle gets up to make some tea.

Sometimes, a cup of tea is just a cup of tea. This is not one of those times.

The business of government never stops, and paperwork never rests, even on Hearthwarming. But this particular Hearthwarming, Cabinet Secretary and tea enthusiast Dotted Line plans to do his level best to see it, at least, take a break. His ponies need to go home to their families, and he, well, he has plans this Hearthwarming.

When one pony loves another pony, but that pony is smitten with another pony, and yet that pony is enamored with yet another pony, who's head over heels for a different pony, who can't wait to express her feelings to her own favorite pony, who worships the earth that the first pony walks on, then what is the pony to say to the other pony that is different from what the pony wishes to confess to the other pony who is longing after another pony who can't wait to share hooves with another pony who is infatuated with another pony who is too flustered to say anything to the first pony to begin with?  Can the pony who loves a pony who loves another pony who loves yet another pony who has a crush on a different pony who can't stop thinking about the first pony still all be friends?

Following the Royal Wedding in Canterlot, Princess Celestia escorts Twilight and friends to the train station. Along the way, Pinkie Pie gets her chance to speak with the princess about something she observed during the wedding ceremony - what she believes to be an 'inside joke' between the Royal Sisters.

"Oh come on, Applejack!  Just one trip around the clouds!  One!"

It's an invitation that Applejack has heard countless times.  However, no matter how often Rainbow Dash bugs her to experience an air ride, the farm filly flat out refuses.

Then one afternoon, on a day when Applejack is strangely quiet and distant, she suddenly agrees to Rainbow Dash's persistent request.  The pegasus happily oblidges, not knowing what has truly motivated Applejack to give in, nor the fact that--more than anything--Applejack could really use a good friend right about now.
