Twilight and Rainbow are asked by Star Swirl the Bearded to take on the challenge of finding his lost wife and daughter in the decaying world of Sohndar, which is ruled by an old enemy of Star Swirl's family who has been trapped there for uncounted years.  Although their adventures in the worlds of Aitran have given our heroes the confidence to succeed, they'll soon find that Sohndar is an entirely different bale of hay.

Pinkie Pie of Solaris is overjoyed when she receives word that she has been chosen as the new bearer of the Element of Laughter, one of the six Elements of Harmony that maintain peace in Equestria and keep the Spirit of Chaos, Discord, sealed within his stone prison. Fluttershy of Nocturne is less than pleased with the news, realizing that her role as the bearer of the Element of Kindness will result in her and the other bearers' deaths to maintain the Elements' power. Nonetheless, both are resigned to their fates as they journey to the Holy Land to enact the ritual and bring another age of peace and harmony to Equestria.

So when the ritual fails unexpectedly and Discord is freed, the peace between Harmonia, Nocturne, and Solaris is shattered and war threatens to engulf the lands. Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, finding themselves lost in a world gone mad, join together in an effort to stop the wars breaking out across Equestria and to seal Discord away permanently. Along the way, these two mares will face challenges and hardships, both inside and out, and will learn what it truly means to be the Elements of Laughter and Kindness...

...Assuming they aren't killed or thrown into a dungeon first, of course.

Numen was less than normal. Not that he minded, most of the time. He had his parents. He had freedom. The only snag? He was an alicorn in a world where there were only supposed to be two: Celestia and Luna. Growing up can be hard. Especially when other ponies expect you to be either a fiendish demon or their savior. Or when you accidentally release an elder god composed of pure chaos and entropy, and start what most ponies would consider the end of times.

Despite his terrible, horrible luck, a happy, grey-coated pegasus with golden eyes starts him on a journey that he never dreamed of. With his own fate undetermined, and a wide, huge world waiting for him, who knows what will become of the white and blue alicorn colt?

This story is part of the Royal Road collaboration, an alternate history of our favorite ponies during Equestria's Crusades. Rated "Dark" at other's request, since the average episode of Doctor Who is dark compared to the average MLP:FIM episode.

When facing Twilight Sparkle, Nightmare Moon was given a choice: redemption or revenge.  What if she had chosen the latter?  A grim fate awaits Equestria, but in a time of greater strife and conflict, Discord's return is accelerated. While he expected to bring chaos, he did not anticipate that he would end the Longest Night and bring hope and joy back to the land.

Discord struggles to reconcile his nature with his desire for admiration.  While Twilight's friends strive to carve a new life in the ever-shifting Equestria, she searches for Celestia, the only one who can bring harmony back to her lands.  But Nightmare Moon also seeks her sister in a desperate attempt to find her place in the world.  New dangers lurk in the wild and more threaten to fall over Equestria.  Nightmare Moon's decision broke the balance of the world.  Will Equestria ever turn to peace, or will the spiral of chaos and destruction be the end of everything?

(An alternate history, this story takes the universe established by the canon and explores one possible outcome if Princess Luna had not been redeemed.)
