This is a short story I've been thinking about. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Nightmare Moon, in addition to Princess Luna herself, is a dreamwalker. One night, she happens upon a filly bereft of companionship. She intends to walk away but something about the filly attracts her attention.

The royal sisters Celestia and Luna rule over day and night. Unknown to most ponies there are also two alicorn brothers who rule, but not over day or night, but over life and death. One has the power to choose which souls die, but the other, younger one is the one who decides which souls live. This story is the lost tale of the younger brother, Dafor Lifelock.

          Golden Hooves is a name that to most ponies brings to mind a fresh, cultured author, a progenitor of many entertaining mysteries and adventures. He has fame, respect and wealth, a fitting reward to one gifted with so much talent. Yet to Golden himself, none of that matters save for the writing itself, the inspiration that fuels him. After nearly a month of futile attempts and ominous stagnation, the creeping suspicion that his life has lost meaning overcomes him. As his inspiration flees him, he launches himself into the land he thought he knew- the canvas he had blindly painted, in an attempt to find his life again Beyond the Horizon.

Twilight has spent the last two decades fighting against the dark forces which threaten the peaceful kingdom of Equestria.  As a Royal Alicorn Princess, she has no choice in the matter.  Her weapons are knowledge and intellect; her training is research.  She is the greatest magician Equestria has ever known, but it has all come at a cost, both physically and mentally.  She resents her friends for the happy, carefree lives they've been able to lead.  Somepony will have to breach her walls of isolation and sorrow before she does something foolish.
