I would do it, but considering you haven't been online in over 4 years I don't think anything will come of it

I forgot I started this group. Anyone want to take it over for me?

My story was good, but the likes and dislikes kept on balancing themselves, and it's driving me nuts.

You don't have to draw them yourself.
Google image search works.

376461 As much as I'd like to have a cover image for stuff, I'm not that good at drawing stuff, I don't have any real way to get a cover image up on it even if I drew one, and I really don't want to ask someone else to do it.

That and while getting my stuff read by a lot of people would be nice, I don't think I'm a great writer. So, low view counts and the like don't really bug me that much.

Thanks for the tip, though!

Well having a prologue isn't (that) bad. I would at least wait until chapter 1 was finished to post it, though.

Also, hint: if you want people to read your stories, they must have cover images. And even a poor-quality or irrelevant cover image is better than none.
(No, even I wouldn't downvote for the lack of a cover image... but a missing cover image will get you an even worse fate: not being noticed at all.)

376307 Originally, it was supposed to be an in media res opening to chapter 1, with the actual story being like those Killing X books, following the assassin all the way to that moment and going on from there.
Then I came to the conclusion that I'm not talented enough to write that story, and I turned it into the prologue of a somewhat different idea.
I didn't label it chapter 1 because it really felt more like a prologue than an actual chapter of the story. I never meant to come off as sleazy, and I'm sorry if that's what it looks like.

1. Publishing incomplete fics is a good idea, especially for longer fics. If you're a new writer and you put out a 300,000 word story, how many people will ACTUALLY be like: "yeah, let's read this!" ?
Putting up small portions pulls readers in. Think of it like a TV series: would you watch all 26 episodes of FIM season 1 back to back as your first experience of MLP? I know I wouldn't. I started small, then got reeled in.
Also, a new story will quickly fall off the new stories list, but updating the story regularly will keep it on the updates list.
. . .

I write the whole thing out, then update daily... which gets you in that 'recently updated' list for the extra attention, with the minimum of making your readers suffer.
And personally, I'd be even less likely to read a long fic by a beginner if it was incomplete. Why? Because so many of them never finish their overly-ambitious stories.

If you're a new author and you want to build up a reputation, write some one-shots... not single chapters of a huge epic.

2. I can sympathize with using the dislike button a lot. I'm in the Knights of the 'something' table, a group that lives to attack bad fanfics. I use that down thumb a lot. But this was a story that got added to Overly Stupid Fanfiction, and if you read the story you might agree that it doesn't deserve that. Bland, maybe, but not "Overly Stupid". As a result, many people initially disliked simply because it appeared in that group. They didn't leave criticism.

Indeed they could have.
Perhaps they should have.

But really, expecting your readers to read a prologue and then wait for chapter 1? That's pretty sleazy.

You should know...
1: I'm not a fan of incomplete fics. I won't read a story until it's labeled complete... and I don't post my own stories until they're entirely written and edited, down to the last line.
2: I downvote a lot. So nobody should take it personally. I think the downvote button should be used a lot more: that's what will make the ratings system actually work, and it will help you find the stories that are actually good. Hell, I've even downvoted a few of my own stories for various reasons... and I'd say a story doesn't have to be bad to earn a downvote, it just needs to be not good.

376303
Really? You down-voted for that? Did you even read their story? They could have titled it "Chapter 1", and it wouldn't have gotten a dislike.

376298
Hm... publishing a story with only a prologue, not even chapter 1?
I'd downvote just for that. :raritywink:
In fact...
There, done.

This group was actually just created because of this story.

It had a negative number of likes to dislikes due to being added to the Overly Stupid Fanfiction group for no good reason. It's since gotten better.

Such stories are a lot less common than ego-bruised authors would have you believe. :trixieshiftright:

More often, the story richly deserves the downvotes it received.

At any rate, though, I'll join.
I've got an experimental one that bombed, but is actually quite good if you approach it with an open mind, I think.
