As for first unicorn to fly... how is he the first? Clearly it's not difficult to do, as Pumpkin Pie managed it as a foal.
Ponies have existed for many years, so how come nopony had used magic to fly before? Moreover, how does anypony know whether he's the first?
Enough blabber from me. How about his personality traits. He's clearly intellectual, but is he a smartalec? Is he modest about his intellect?

How we portray him is this:
He works at the ponyville observatory.
He is very smart in terms of knowledge of stars,comets and astronomy. (Almost Twilight Smart)
He hangs out with Soarin,Noteworthy, Caramel, Thunderlane and Pokey Pierce.
He became the first unicorn to fly (it's how got his cutie mark)
He is very pure of heart(he's basically Goku kind)

That is my intention.
I'm just trying to work out how best to portray him. I want him and Twilight to be able to have intellectual conversations, but beyond that is anypony's guess.
