It all began by complete accident. All of it, just by a simple mistake. Yet, it changed the lives of two ponies forever. It began on the day of Hearth’s Warming Eve. Ponyville was full of activity as everypony prepared for the holiday. Twilight Sparkle was especially busy; she had been waiting for this day for a whole year after all. She couldn’t wait till tomorrow. She had the whole day planned out. First she and Spike would open up their presents for each other, and then she would get all of her friends together and play some games outside. She was especially looking forward to a snowball fight. Then, once they all had their fun, they would go to Twilight’s and exchange presents! It was going to be amazing!
Twilight was in the middle of decorating the main room when a knock came to the door. She made her way over to the door with a smile on her face. As she opened the door she wondered who would bother her at the end of the day. When she saw who was on the other side of the door she immediately bowed.
“P-princess Luna! What are you doing here?” Twilight asked surprised. She hadn’t really seen the princess since last year’s Nightmare Night as she had gotten sick on this years.
“Greetings Twilight Sparkle! It’s good to see you again!” Luna’s voice was soft and sweet and this time no Canterlot Voice!
“It’s good to see you too Princess! What are you doing here?” Twilight asked still a little surprised at the princess’s visit. She slowly got up and invited Luna in.
“I actually came here wondering if I, if I could… well….” Luna trailed off.
“Um, what was that Princess?” Twilight asked now confused as to why the Princess suddenly seemed a little shy.
“I was wondering if I could, possibly, stay with you on Hearth’s Warming Eve…” Luna mumbled.
“Princess there’s no need to be shy. Were both friends here, you can tell me what it is you want to do.” Twilight gave Luna a reassuring smile. This gave Luna some courage and she took a deep breath.
“I was wondering if I could spend Hearth’s Warming Eve with you.” Luna said now shying away a little. Twilight’s eyes grew wide with shock. Then a giant smile appeared on her face.
“YES OF COURSE YOU CAN!!!! I’LL GET THE SLEEPING BAGS! OH THIS IS GONNA BE SO MUCH FUN!” With that Twilight ran upstairs to her closet to get two sleeping bags. Luna just stood there, shocked. She couldn’t believe Twilight’s reaction. She could have sworn that she had turned into Pinkie Pie for a minute. And she was still shocked at how eager Twilight had been to let her stay over. But what really had her shocked was that one word Twilight had said to her.
“A friend Luna, you have a friend!” Luna whispered to herself, a few tears coming to her eyes. She heard Twilight coming down the stairs and immediately wiped the tears away. Twilight came down carrying two sleeping bags on her back and a smile still on her face.
“Alright Princess, I have the sleeping bags!” Twilight said with excitement still in her voice. Luna gave a small smile.
“Um, Twilight?”
“Yes Princess?”
“Can you please just call me Luna?” Luna asked while looking at the floor.
“Of course, Luna.” Twilight saw that Luna was still looking at the floor. She slowly walked over to her and sat down next to her. Twilight’s nose picked up a marvelous smell. It smelt like a warm spring night with a hint of honeysuckle. She soon realized that it was Luna who smelled so wonderful. Twilight took in a deep breath and slowly let it out, letting the scent linger in her nose as long as possible. She then looked at Luna who was still looking at the ground.
“Luna, what’s wrong?” Twilight asked. Luna looked up at Twilight and their eyes locked. Twilight’s shining purple eyes stared into Luna’s sparkling sapphire eyes. The two were silent for a moment; then Luna began to speak.
“It’s just that, I’ve never really done something like this before.” Luna said with a small blush on her face. Twilight smiled at this.
“It’s okay Luna, I remember I was a little nervous at my first slumber party, and that was only two years ago.” Twilight said, blushing a little herself. Now Luna had a small smile on her face. “Now then, I’m going to show you what helped me with my first time at a slumber party.” Twilight’s horn glowed as she concentrated her magic on a specific book. Luna just looked on, waiting to see what Twilight was talking about. Soon Twilight was making her way back over to Luna, a book floating in front of her. Luna read out the title of the book.
“Everything You Wanted to Know About Slumber Parties but Were Afraid to Ask. This is the book that helped you?” Luna asked.
“Yep, of course it doesn’t have everything in it, but it’s a great guideline!” Twilight said with a smile on her face. Luna smiled back. Twilight set the book on the floor and opened it to the beginning. Then, she and Luna sat down and read over the book until it was late into the night. They soon both went over to the beckoning sleeping bags, and snuggled in for a nice night.
“Twilight, where is your assistant Spike?” Luna asked, wondering why she had not seen the purple dragon at all.
“Oh, he’s spending the night over at Rarity’s to help her finish decorating. He’ll be back tomorrow if you want to say hi.” Twilight said yawning. Sleep was finally winning and soon Twilight was out like a light. Luna, however, was still wide awake. She twiddled her hooves and looked around the now dark library. She looked over the large amount of books stacked neatly on their shelves, she saw Twilight’s work desk with ink and parchment spread out on it, and she saw an owl looking out the window on the top floor. She let out a sigh and tried to get comfortable in the sleeping bag. She tossed and turned but nothing seemed a good position to relax in. Her eyes then noticed Twilight sleeping. Luna stared at her in the dim light of the night. She seemed so peaceful. Luna let out another sigh. It was no use; she wasn’t used to sleeping at night. She quietly got up from her sleeping bag and began looking around at the books. She saw interesting novels, advanced spell books, encyclopedias, and many more. One book, however, caught her attention. She immediately pulled the book from the shelf with her magic and looked at the title. It was The Lessons of Friendship and Other Experiences. Luna could tell by the cover and the handwriting that this book was not officially published. She looked for the author and to her surprise it was Twilight Sparkle! She was writing a book on everything she was learning about friendship!
“Why keep it hidden on a shelf where nopony would think to look…. Oh…” Luna finally realized that Twilight had hidden the book for a reason. She was about to put it back when something fell out of the book. Luna carefully picked it up and looked over the item. It was another book. However it was much smaller than any of the books on the shelves. Luna looked for a title on the cover but found none. Her curiosity getting the better of her, she took a peek inside the book. It had a very odd format for a book. It began with a date, then a dear dairy.
“… Dear… Diary… Uh-oh…” Luna quickly closed the book. She had a slight blush on her face. She couldn’t believe Twilight of all ponies would have a secret diary! Luna’s curiosity began to get the best of her and she began to open the dairy.
“No Luna! That wouldn’t be very nice to intrude on somepony’s personal thoughts and feelings… but it’s right there! Oh why did I have to find this?!” Luna kept arguing with herself until she finally reached a decision.
“I’ll just read one page to stop my curiosity and then leave it at that.” Luna slowly opened the book to a random page and began reading.
November 1
Dear Diary,
Today I feel, weird. Last night was amazing though! My friends and I got to celebrate Nightmare Night together! I also got to meet with Princess Luna! I even got to help her make some new friends! I had a great time and I’m sure everypony else did too! But for some reason I keep getting this weird feeling in the bottom of my stomach. It’s not a bad feeling, it’s just weird. And for some reason I keep thinking of Princess Luna. When I’m reading, or napping, or even eating. My mind just keeps brining her up. I’ve read a lot of books on feelings but the one that it says I’m experiencing can’t be right. Could it? Am I in love with Princess Luna?
After reading that last sentence Luna immediately closed the diary. She then put it back into the other book and placed it back on the shelf. Her heart was beating fast, she was sweating a little, and there was a blush on her face. She was still trying to comprehend what she had just read. She then felt herself getting tired. She made her way over to her sleeping bag and cuddled into it. Just as she was drifting off into sleep a question popped into her head
“Do I love Twilight Sparkle?” Luna whispered out loud. Her eyes were now heavy and they slowly began to close. Finally sleep overtook her and she faded from conciseness. Little did she know that the lavender unicorn next to her was wide awake.
Authors Notes: Okay everyone here it is, the rewritten chapter! Oh and any chapter with the Rewrite Story Line means that it follows this one not the original, which I will remove when Chapter 3 is released! Enjoy the story!
An accident, that is how it all started. It was only an accident. However, this accident changed two ponies’ lives forever. But we are getting ahead of ourselves here. Let us begin this correctly, at the beginning. It all started with a princess…
Princess Luna sat on her balcony. Her beautiful night sky was overhead with her moon lighting up the night. Everything was quiet, for winter had settled over the land. All the animals were either tucked away in their homes or gone south so they would not have to bear the cold. Nopony dared go outside either. Especially at night for fear of the bitter cold nipping at them. Luna understood this. She was also beginning to feel the effects of winter on her own body. Still, she wished somepony was awake to talk to her. There were her Lunar Guards but they weren’t big talkers. Her sister was certainly sleeping, preparing her tired body to raise the sun when she awoke. Luna let out a sigh which immediately turned to fog once her warm breath hit the cold air. With that she went inside to her chambers.
Her room was quite dark except for a few lit candles placed randomly around her room. Paperwork sat in high stacks on her work desk, books and pieces of blank parchment were scattered about on the floor and on tables. Luna’s large bed beckoned to her as she walked around her room. Its sleek silk covers dyed a deep blue wanted to welcome her with open arms. Her fluffy blue pillows begged for a head to be lain on them. Seeing no other way to entertain herself she answered their callings. She carefully snuggled into the covers and gently laid her head on the soft pillows. This time a content sigh escaped her lips. She got comfortable and just laid there, staring into the darkness around her. Of course she didn’t get into the bed to sleep. She was the Princess of the Night after all. But that didn’t mean that she could not sleep at night to be awake during the day when that was required of her. She just laid there, thinking. That was her only way to really waste time on nights like these. Her mind drifted off into deep thought. She thought about all the paperwork she still had to do. She thought about when she returned to Canterlot for the first time in a thousand years. She thought about how many ponies now actually looked at her night instead of just falling asleep. Then her thoughts wandered over to a lavender unicorn. Somepony who had helped her become better acquainted with the modern world.
“Twilight Sparkle…” Luna whispered to herself. Luna’s mind kept thinking back to that night. How kind and understanding Twilight had been. How she had helped her make some friends with many of the ponies in Ponyville. But most important of all, was how Twilight had not given up on her and stayed faithful to her. Luna smiled in the darkness.
“I should really try to go see Twilight Sparkle again. It has been a while since our last meeting with each other. Then again that second Nightmare Night was not really a get together. It was still pretty fun though. Yes, I think I shall clear a few days off to go see Twilight Sparkle, and maybe some of her friends. After all, what better time than the holidays?” With that in mind Luna noticed that her night was almost over. As much as she loved to see her sister raise the sun, she decided that it was time for her to sleep. And so, with much difficulty due to her excitement, Luna slowly faded from consciousness.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Spike! Do you know where the snowflake decorations are?” Asked a frantic Twilight as she did her best to prepare for the upcoming holiday of Hearth’s Warming Eve. However, she was in a panicked frenzy as Hearth’s Warming Eve was only four days away. She still needed to finish decorating the inside of the library, get all the gifts wrapped, and make plans with her friends.
“They’re in the closet right behind you.” A rather irritated Spike answered. He hated when Twilight got like this. She never really listened to reason in this state.
Upon hearing the baby dragon’s answer Twilight immediately searched the closet and found the decorations. She let out a sigh of relief. She grabbed the decorations with her magic and began positioning them on the celling.
“Hey Twilight?” Spike asked while finishing putting a bow on the end of the stairway.
“Yes Spike?” Twilight asked back while still hanging the last of the snowflakes.
“I’m finished decorating and I’ve already done all my chores. Can I go to Rarity’s now? PLEASE?!?!” Spike asked desperately.
“Sure Spike. Just remember to dress warmly and be careful out there. It’s already beginning to get dark.” Twilight said with some concern in her voice.
“Already ahead of you Twilight.” Spike said as he was buttoning up his coat and wrapped a scarf around his neck. “I’ll be back tomorrow probably around noon okay Twilight?” Spike said heading for the door.
“Okay Spike, see you tomorrow.” Twilight gave the baby dragon a small smile as he departed from the library. As soon as he was gone Twilight looked around the room, looking to see if anypony was watching her. When she had confirmed nopony was near her she made her way over to one of the many shelves that lined the library. Only this shelf was never touched by anypony other than Twilight. Not even Spike was allowed near it. Why? Because this shelf contained Twilight’s special books. Most of them being photo books or some of her favorite book titles. However, there was a much more secret reason that this shelf was off limits. She looked around one more time to make sure the coast was clear. She then used her magic to get a book from the top of the shelf. It was a thick book with the title The Starry Night. She carefully opened the large book to the back cover where something was hidden in plain sight. What would seem to be a normal book cover was actually a secret compartment. Twilight gently opened the back cover to reveal pages hidden underneath it. On each page was a different date and then a Dear Diary. Twilight had been given the secret diary from Princess Celestia when she was a young filly so that she could record new spells and potions without anypony getting their hooves on them. That and to write about her day. Twilight had accepted it without hesitation. She had been writing in it whenever she could.
“Now I can finally write another entry. Let’s see, Dear Diary, Today I…” Suddenly a knock came at the door. Twilight quickly closed her dairy and the book and put it back in its place. As she ran to the door she wondered who would be bothering her at this hour. When she opened the door complete shock filled her body. In front of her was the Princess of the Night!
“P-princess Luna! W-what are you doing here? Not that there is anything wrong with you being here!” Twilight stuttered as she was still shocked at her surprise guest.
“Greetings Twilight Sparkle! I come here to… Twilight, why are you shaking?” Luna asked the unicorn. Twilight was indeed shaking and it wasn’t from the cold.
“I’m just very surprised to see you is all, and a little shocked…” Twilight said as she began to calm down.
“I see, well then. I have come here to ask you if I may be able to, well… spend a few days with you. And maybe if I could stay for Hearth’s Warming Eve?” Luna said, her confidence slowly draining from her body as the fear of rejection took its place. Twilight just stared at her for a minute, her brain trying to process what the princess had just said. Her eyes then suddenly went wide and a giant smile appeared on her face.
“YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!! OF COURSE YOU CAN STAY!!!” Luna had a shocked and confused expression on her face as Twilight jumped around her with her big grin on. Soon enough though Twilight calmed down, but the smile remained on her face. Luna couldn’t help but smile back at her. “Um, sorry about that Princess. I guess I got a little excited.” Twilight said with a slight blush on her face.
“A little?” Luna asked teasingly as her nervousness and fear faded away. Twilight’s blush deepened. “So Twilight Sparkle, where shall I be sleeping?” Luna asked while looking around the library.
Well, I don’t really have the guest room made up yet so the best I could do is offer you my bed while I sleep in a sleeping bag.” Twilight said while feeling a bit embarrassed that she was not prepared for guests.
“No Twilight Sparkle, I shall not accept thy, I mean your bed. Do you perhaps have another one of these sleeping bags?” Luna asked.
“I do actually, but are you sure you don’t want my bed Princess? I mean sleeping bags aren’t always comfy.”
“It is quite alright Twilight, and please just call me Luna.”
“Okay Prin- I mean, Luna. I’ll go get the sleeping bags from the closet.” And so Twilight made her way upstairs. Luna looked around at the library some more, wondering if there was a good book on one of the many shelves. She looked at all of the titles and different genres but none of them really spiked her interests. Then her eyes were drawn to one particular shelf in the room. It was full of photo books and interesting titles, but one called out to her. It was titled The Starry Night. Luna was immediately interested. The book was then wrapped in a blue aurora and it floated down to Luna. She began to open the book when she heard hoof beats coming down the stairs. She looked up to see Twilight carrying two sleeping bags and a book in her magic as she made her way down. Luna put the book back in its place and headed over to Twilight. When Twilight reached the bottom she used her magic to unfurl the two sleeping bags and place them on the cool ground.
“So these are sleeping bags?” Luna asked looking at the two odd things in front of her.
“Yep! They may not be as comfortable as beds but they will keep us warm.” Twilight gave Luna a weak smile to reassure her. Luna gave a small smile in return. Luna then looked at the book Twilight was holding.
“Um, Twilight, what is that book you are holding about?” Luna asked while trying to see the book’s title.
“Oh, this is a book I think I need to take a look at again since it’s been a while since my last slumber party.” Twilight then showed the book to Luna.
“Slumber 101: Everything You Wanted to Know About Slumber Parties But Were Afraid to Ask. Twilight, what is a slumber party?” Luna asked. Twilight’s jaw dropped open.
“You mean you’ve never had a slumber party before?” Twilight asked shocked.
“No, what is it?” Luna asked again.
“Well, it’s where a whole bunch of friends stay up late at night and have fun!” Twilight explained. Now Luna’s jaw dropped.
“You mean ponies actually stay up at night and have, fun…” Luna asked as her excitement built up.
“Yeah! Lots of ponies do it! And we get to do it tonight.” Twilight gave Luna another smile. Luna just looked at her with complete happiness and went up to Twilight and embraced her in a tight hug!
“OH THIS IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN!!!” Luna exclaimed as she spun around with Twilight still in her arms.
“Ugh Princess, do you think you could put me down please, I’m getting dizzy!” With that Luna stopped spinning and immediately put down the purple unicorn who was now swaying a little.
“Sorry Twilight, it seems I got a little excited!” Luna said with a small blush. Twilight looked at her and began laughing. Luna soon joined in. When they both calmed down a bit Twilight opened her book and began reading the first page.
“Let’s see here… The first thing we do is… makeovers!” Twilight said with a giddy smile on her face. Luna just had a very unsure look on hers.
Well, thirty minutes later and the two of them had their hair done and a mud mask on their faces. Of course Twilight did have to explain to Luna that a mud mask was not just mud from the ground that put on your face. The two sat back relaxing on their sleeping bags, each letting out a content sigh. After a little while longer of relaxing the two of them removed their masks and felt how smooth their faces had become.
“Wow, I never thought that mud could do this!” Luna said happily.
“Well, now that we’ve done makeovers, the next thing is ghost stories.” Twilight said in an eerie voice. Luna just sat down and gave Twilight her full attention. She knew of telling ghost stories. Celestia would sometimes tell her a spooky ghost story at night when they were younger to give her a scare. This usually led to Celestia sleeping next to Luna, cuddling her and telling her that she would keep her safe.
Twilight scooted a little closer to Luna and turned off the light with her magic, except for a tiny candle which she put between them. Its soft and warm glow only illuminated a small part of the two mares’ faces which gave the room an eerie feel.
“So, would you like to go first Luna, or should I?” Twilight asked.
“I would like you to go first.” Luna said as she had her ears ready to listen.
“Okay, this one is called the Ghost of Canterlot…”
And so Twilight told Luna the tale of the Ghost that roamed Canterlot Castle, seeking anypony foolish enough to enter his territory deep under the castle and trapping them for eternity in the dungeons located there. It was indeed a spooky tale, a little too spooky. Twilight then finished her story and saw Luna’s expression show a slight hint of fear as she looked back and forth in the darkness. Twilight giggled at this.
“Okay Luna, would you like to tell a story now?”
“N-no, I’m quite sure I have had enough ghost stories for one night.” Luna said still looking back and forth in the darkness. Twilight giggled again and turned on the lights once more. Luna let out a sigh of relief.
“Okay, next on the list is s’mores!” Twilight said.
“Um, what are these, s’mores?” Luna asked with a puzzled look on her face.
“Oh, they’re these delicious little treats! They’re made of graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate! They taste amazing!” Twilight explained.
“Very well then. Where are they?” Luna asked. Twilight just looked at her and began laughing. “What is so funny Twilight?” Luna asked with a rather embarrassed look on her face.
“We have to make them Luna!” Twilight said after she finally stopped laughing.
“Oh, well then let us get started.” And so Twilight led the way and the two of them went upstairs to the fireplace and began the wondrous process of making s’mores. It was a little weird for Luna at first but with Twilight’s help she began to get the hang of making the wonderful little treats. Once they were finished Luna looked at the thing called a s’more in front of her.
“So this is a s’more?” Luna asked with an unsure look.
“Yep! It’s okay Luna, trust me they taste delicious!” With that Luna slowly brought the s’more to her mouth and took a small bite. Her eyes immediately went wide and within a second the s’more was gone, eaten whole by Luna’s eager mouth. Luna then went over to the tray holding the other s’mores. They were soon all gobbled up into Luna’s stomach. Twilight just stared at the princess who still had some marshmallow stuck on her cheeks.
“I knew they were good but did you have to eat all of them?” Twilight joked. Luna blushed realizing what she had done.
“I am sorry Twilight; I don’t know what came over me.” Luna confessed.
“It’s okay, they are delicious!”
“Indeed. So what is next on our list of fun?” Luna asked with excitement in her voice.
“Let’s see here. The next thing is… Truth or Dare!” Twilight squeed with excitement.
“Um, what is that?” Luna asked.
“It’s a fun game where a pony asks another pony to tell a deep truth or to do a daring dare! It’s really fun!” Twilight exclaimed.
“If you say so Twilight. I guess you ask first.”
“Let’s see. Luna, have you ever dated another pony?” Twilight asked with a sly smile on her face. Luna immediately blushed a deep red.
“Well, I-I, um… can we do something else please?” Luna asked with pleading eyes.
“Sure, but you have to ask me a question or dare me to do something first!” Twilight said.
“Very well then. Hmmm, I dare you to… give me a hug!” Luna said with a smile on her face. Twilight blushed a little at the dare but none the less went up to Luna and wrapped her hooves around her. Luna returned the hug and tightened it a little. Twilight was shocked at the warmth of Luna’s body. She was also very soft and smooth. Luna also had this intoxicating aroma. She smelt of an open field at night during the spring with a nice breeze blowing through the grass and flowers. Twilight could have hugged her forever.
“Um, Twilight, you can let go now.” Luna said, snapping Twilight out of her trance. She immediately released Luna and backed away a little.
“I’m sorry Luna, I didn’t me to-” Twilight was cut off as Luna hushed her with her hoof.
“It’s alright Twilight. There was no harm done. So, is there anything else to do, tis getting a little late after all. I know ponies need their sleep.” Luna said looking at the clock. It read 10:50 pm.
“Well there is one more thing but I’m not sure if you would like it. It’s called a pillow fight and what you do is…” *wham* Twilight was rammed right in the face with a pillow. Twilight slowly looked over to Luna who had a few more pillows ready to fire. Twilight just gave Luna a look and got a few of her own pillows.
“Let the fun BEGIN!” Luna declared as pillows were suddenly sent flying through the air as the two ponies began their epic battle! About thirty minutes of pillow throwing action later the two ponies dropped to the ground in complete exhaustion.
“I, I give Luna, I can’t go on…” Twilight gasped for breath.
“Nor can I. Truce?” Luna was also trying to gain control of her breathing.
“Truce.” Twilight said finally getting her lungs to calm down. The two exhausted ponies then went downstairs to the beckoning sleeping bags. Each of them gratefully entered their own bag and wrapped themselves up in the warm cloth. They both let out a content sigh and they both began to let sleep claim them. Luna looked over to Twilight and smiled to herself. Thinking Twilight had already fallen asleep she whispered,
“Good night, my little love.” And Luna then faded from consciousness. However, Twilight now laid in her bag, wide awake.
Twilight laid there in the darkness, unable to comprehend what she had just heard. Her brain was abuzz with activity as it tried its best to make sense of what it had witnessed.
“Did Princess Luna just call me her… little love?!?” Twilight whispered to herself. Shock was now setting in and Twilight began to shiver. “Calm down Twilight, calm down!” Twilight urged her body to comply. She slowly got a hold of herself. She then slowly looked over at Luna and just starred at her. She was beautiful. Her glowing blue mane softly illuminated the room with its tiny sparkles that resembled the stars. Her face was calm and peaceful as if not a thing in the world could bother her. Twilight was in a trance, she just couldn’t look away. No matter how hard she tried her eyes stayed fixed on Luna. “A-am I in love with Princess Luna?!?” Twilight asked herself. Her thought broke her from the trance as she pondered at the possibility that she might actually love Luna.. “Well, it is possible. No, I can’t love the princess! It would never work. She would be too busy and I would be busy with my studies. But she does look beautiful, and she’s very kind…” Twilight trailed off as she was back in her trance. Her eyes then began to grow heavy and they slowly started to close. The last thing Twilight saw was Luna’s face, her peaceful and cute face.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Luna awoke with a start, immediately sitting up and looking at her surroundings. When she saw that she was in Twilight’s library she calmed down and slowly went back to lying down on her sleeping bag.
“Phew, I thought I was late for one of the royal meetings!” Luna said to herself. She looked up at the clock which read 6:00 am. She let out a content sigh and snuggled into her little cocoon some more. She noticed something was covering her right eye. She soon realized that it was her mane. No, not her dark blue starry mane. It had been replaced with light blue hair as had her tail. It was what happened during the day since she was not of the age where her mane stays in the flowing form as her sister’s did. She did like her mane this way though. She liked how she could decorate and style it, which she had done many times when she was younger. However, what she liked most about it was its simplicity. It made her feel that her complicated world could fade away into a manageable and nice one. That and her sister always thought that she looked adorable with her mane like this. Her attention then turned away from her mane. She looked over at Twilight and smiled at the sleeping unicorn. “She looks so adorable when she’s asleep.” Luna said. Luna then put a hoof to her mouth. “W-what did I just say?”
“You said that you thought she looked adorable in her sleep. And I must agree.” A voice said from seemingly nowhere.
“N-nightmare? I-is that you?” Luna asked, now scared.
“Yes dear, it’s me. How have you been?” Nightmare asked out of the blue.
“F-fine, what are you doing here? You’re not going to corrupt me again if that’s your-” Luna was cut off by Nightmare’s voice.
“Now Luna you know as well as I do that it was not just my doing that got us our punishment. However nopony can blame you, especially from what you endured. And you know I’m not going to corrupt you. The elements of harmony have seen to that. I am now pure, just as you are. So, my little pony has been making friends?” Nightmare asked in a surprisingly kind voice.
“Y-yes, I have. Why does that concern you?” Luna asked with some shakiness in her voice.
“My dear, I am a part of you. Everything you do concerns me. I am happy for you though. You are finally making some friends unlike a thousand years ago. Oh, you were so lonely, it was heartbreaking! However, I am wondering why you are starting a love life so soon.” Nightmare said all of this with a motherly voice, much like Celestia. It took Luna completely by surprise. But what really shocked her was Nightmare talking about her starting a love life.
“What do you mean by a love life? I don’t have a special somepony.” Luna said back, a small blush appearing on her face.
“Luna, I am a part of you. I know you better than you know yourself! That and you called Twilight ‘my little love’. I know that you have feelings for Miss Twilight Sparkle, and I couldn’t be happier. However, remember to be careful in a relationship, things don’t always turn out the way you expect them to.” Nightmare was beginning to sound more like a nurturing mother than a voice inside of Luna’s mind. Luna was still not sure how or why Nightmare was acting this way. Nightmare sensed this. “Ah, questioning my change in personality? Luna, as I said before, the Elements of Harmony also purified me. And you apparently also forget that I kept you company during our, rather long period away from home.” Nightmare explained.
Out of all that explaining though Luna just asked one question.
“I called Twilight ‘my little love’?” Luna asked while trying to remember those words leaving her mouth.
“Yes, of course you were very tired. I guess it just slipped from your thoughts to your mouth and you said it by accident. But you two do make a cute couple!” Nightmare said.
“I-I I…” Luna trailed off, unsure of what to say. Then she realized who she was talking to.
“How do I know that I can trust you? How do I know that you are speaking the truth and not lies?” Luna asked.
“Because my sweet little Luna, you know that you have control over me, and that I could not hurt or corrupt you even if I tried. And what I tell you is just some friendly advice and a little slip of your tongue! Nothing more.” Nightmare said innocently. Luna knew that she did speak the truth, even if it was hard to believe. Nightmare had been like a mother to her on the moon, much like Celestia had been to her when they were still little. It was rather strange, especially because Luna remembered that Nightmare had caused much suffering to Equestria. But, Celestia did tell her before to let others have a second chance, if they deserved one. Well if she got a second chance, then why not let Nightmare have a second one?
“Oh Luna, I do have a rather big question to ask of you.” Nightmare said.
“What is your question?” Luna asked.
“May I be free for a few minutes please? I need to stretch my wings and legs.” Nightmare asked pleadingly. Luna was very hesitant on the matter, especially since Twilight could wake up at any moment. In the end her kindness won over her logic.
“Okay, but only for a few minutes. Then you go straight back into my mind.”
“Of course, I only need a quick stretch.” Nightmare replied.
With that said Luna let Nightmare flow free from within her. Darkness began to cover her body. Her beautiful blue coat changed to pitch black, she slowly grew taller and her horn grew in length. Her cutie mark changed from black to an illuminated purple behind the crescent moon. Her light blue mane and tail dissipated away, being replaced by a dark blue mist with sparkles shining within it. And finally light blue armor formed from the darkness on her chest and head. Luna was no longer there. In her place stood Nightmare Moon. Nightmare then immediately stretched out her stiff wings and legs. She let out a deep sigh of relief.
“Much better. And now that I am free I can now make it night time eternal!” Nightmare laughed as she spoke.
“WHAT?!?!” NO!!!” Luna pleaded as she began to struggle for control of her body. Then something incredible happened.
Nightmare… giggled, yes giggled!
“Oh, oh that was too good! Luna, did you actually think I was serious?” Now Nightmare began to laugh. Luna was shocked beyond words. Nightmare Moon had just made a joke! Unfortunately for both Nightmare and Luna, Twilight began to wake up from Nightmare’s laughter. Neither of them noticed as the unicorn opened her eyes and the first thing she saw was Nightmare Moon, laughing, in her house.
“… AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Twilight’s scream was so loud that many sleeping residents were awoken from their slumber. However, Twilight’s scream was soon cut short as a hoof was put to her mouth.
“Twilight Sparkle, do not yell. Do you wish for everypony to come in here and see me?” Nightmare said with haste in her voice. Twilight gave a slow nod to indicate that she did. “Now Twilight, I am not here to cause any harm, do not worry or fret okay? I’m going to remove my hoof and I want you to close your eyes.” Twilight complied. Nightmare slowly removed her hoof from Twilight’s mouth. When no scream came she let out a sigh of relief. She then began to glow and her shape began to change. She was becoming smaller, her mane turning back to hair, her pitch black fur becoming blue, and her armor dissipating away. Luna now stood where Nightmare Moon had been a few moments ago.
Luna ran up to Twilight and shook her a little. Twilight slowly opened her eyes and when she saw Luna she hugged her tightly.
“W-what was Nightmare Moon doing here?” Twilight barely managed to say through her shaky voice.
“Well, the best way to put this is that she needed to get out for a little bit.” Luna said with a little blush. Twilight wasn’t really listening as she cuddled closer to Luna. She was so warm, so soft, so comforting. She almost made Twilight forget that Nightmare Moon had just been in her house. However something was different about the Princess of the Night. Twilight realized it was her mane. It was light blue hair instead of a starry night sky.
“Princess, what happened to your mane?” Twilight asked as she stared at the Princess.
“Oh, it gets like this during the day. It will return to the form you know of when night falls.” Luna gave her a small smile, happy to see her finally calmed down. Twilight put on her own smile.
Suddenly Twilight’s door burst open and Rainbow Dash, Apple Jack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Spike stood in the doorway.
“Twilight are you okay? We heard your scream and…” Rainbow trailed off. All of their eyes grew wide with shock with the scene before them. Twilight was hugging Princess Luna, their faces close together. “Umm, what’s going on here?” Dash asked as the rest of the group was too shocked to speak. Twilight and Luna looked at each other then back at the group.
“IT’S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!!!” They both yelled.
