Let's get this out of the way. Hi, my name is Paint Brush. My cutie mark is a paint brush as well. (kinda funny if you think about that). I love all kinds of art. From streetart to art in the Louvre in Lontrot. Music from light and clean classical composers like Neightoven to heavy and dirty death metal bands like Death and Possessed. The only genera of music I despise is pop. I swear, if I hear "Cal-li-for-mane mares. We're undeniable" one more time I will jump off a bridge. The acting arts were okay, but visual arts like laser shows and animation always got my attention more than two ponies talk.I was always a skilled artist. When I was a foal I started getting commissions. The funny thing is that I thought a commission was bad so I used to get all scared that the numbers on the paper (which around me being 8 I learned it was the bits I was gonna be paid after the completion of the project) was the numbers of lashes I would get with a leather belt to my flank. I had a very normal foal hood growing up. Well, if you count having your dad walk out on you, your older brother, and your mother and her being… how can I put this nicely… oh yea batshit insane. My brother mostly raised me when the court decided that my mom was incapable to raise foals. I haven't seen or heard from her since then. I don't even know if she's alive to this day. My brother worked at a restaurant which I last heard from him was that he was now the manager. I graduated top of my class at the Canterlot School of Arts. I thought the graduation party was going to be a drag, but one thing made it fell less like a drag. It's name was Octavia. When she played, it felt as if she reached to the heavens and traded her hoof crafted maple cello for a angelic choir. I could've listen to her for hours if it wasn't for time. Her set ended and I decided to turn on the ole' Paint Brush charm and trotted(in which I meant I stumbled) towards her as she was packing her instrument. We talked about our love for classical music. All I can remember after that is asking her if she wanted to go get out and get a drink. She said she wasn't much of a drinker. She. Was. Lying. When we were at the bar she must've drunk at least five glasses of cider before I finished my first. Everything's a blur after my fifth glass of cider, but the next morning was hooves down the greatest morning ever. I woke up and saw that I slept with Octavia. After our little "escapade" we started to see each other and eight months later, moved in together. Ummm I guess that's my story, so now to the story you actually want to read. The story about how I became blind and how my relationship with Tavi was pushed to the edge.
"We would like to congratulate Paint Brush for getting his masterpiece, Eyes of a Foal, into the Louvre." The head of the Louvre art department said shaking my hoof and the sea of reporters and flashes of orbs were in a frenzy.
I approached the podium as hooves flew in the air. "The Pegasus in the red hat." I said pointing my hoof to the Pegasus pulling out a pencil and pad.
"What was the BRAAA behind the painting?" D-Did he just bra at me?
"Excuse me?" I said cleaning my ears.
"I said what was the idea behind the painting?" He said looking annoyed.
"Oh. I had the idea when I was at lunch and I saw two foals running after each other. Which got me thinking about the world might look like through their eyes. Is it good? Is it bad? Happy? Sad? Fixed? Broken? Then I immediately got up and ran home to begin the painting." I said as he wrote something on his notebook and a new wave of hooves shot up. "Um, the unicorn with the blue framed glasses."
"How does BRAAA! BRAAA!" She said with her mouth wide open as now a choir of ponies in unison screeched "BRAAA! BRAAA! BRAAA!" Then everything went black.
My eyes shot open faster than a bullet leaving a gun a showed that I wasn't at the Louvre in Lontrot, but home lying in bed with my beautiful mare friend, Octavia and revealing the culprit of waking me up, my alarm clock.
"Shut up." I said in a mixture of grogginess and anger while slamming my hoof down on the iron peg in which made the clock go silent and the only sound to be heard was snoring. I turned to see the source of the sound being Octavia. I couldn't help but let out a slight grin as her eyes slowly opened to show her lovely light purple eyes. "Morning." I told her as I gave her a kiss on her forehead in which she responded with a small giggle.
"Morning Paint." She said nuzzling herself into my neck. "Have anything you gotta do today?"
"Well, the Cakes won't be picking up their commission for a couple of hours. That's pretty much all I have to do today. You?"
She just smiled and said. "Nope. That means you're mine all day, and I have an idea what we can do till the Cakes come." She said, looking at me with a sly grin.
"Octavia, you naughty filly." I said while she climbed on me.
"Hey Tavi, somepony's- WHOA SORRY!" Vynal said walking through the door and covering her eyes. "Did I interrupt-"
"Yes." Octavia quickly interjected angrily.
"Well um… somepony's here to see you." Vynal said, not making eye contact with us.
Octavia let out a sigh and got out of the bed and made her way downstairs. Vynal looked at me and broke the awkward silence.
"Sorry about walking in-"
"It's all right." I reassured her as Octavia made her way back into the room. Something was wrong, I could just tell it.
"That was Brass. We have to play in Buckingham tonight and the only train there leaves in an hour."
"Wow. You better get packing." I said as she pulled her cello case from her closet.
"I am packed. The only thing I ever wear is my bowtie." She said giving me a kiss. "Besides, when I get back, I'm all yours." She whispered in my ear as I could feel my cheeks grow warm. "Well bye guys." She said as she once again made her way down the stairs and finally, out the door.
"I should get ready. Mr and Mrs Cake will be here in about a hou-" I was cut short by three knocks on the door. "Or earlier…" I said as I made my way down the stairs and opened the door to see, not the two earth ponies I was expecting, but the blue mane of a customer I have come to known. "Hello Fancy Pants."
"Ah hello Paint. I was wondering if I could commission a drawing?" He said with smile.
"Sure. What for?"
"It's for my wedding anniversary. I want to give Fleur something unforgettable, and all I could think about was one of your paintings. The one you made at the academy years ago still amazes to this day."
"You're kidding me? Okay Fancy, when do you need it?" I said as he pulled out a picture of him and his wife.
"I would like it by next week. I will pay 500 bits or it."
"Fancy, I don't charge 500 bits. I usually charge around 50." I said in disbelief.
"Knowing you Paint, it will be worth it. Goodbye." He said as he turned and trotted away while I was still shocked.
500 bits? That's enough to buy my own studio. Enough to buy a ticket to Lontrot. Enough to... I smiled at my next thought of
what I could buy. Okay Paint, enough thinking. Time to get to work.
I made my way to the bottom of the basement (where my supplies live) and brought up the only things I needed: a sketch pad, paint, spray paint, etc. I carefully set up each piece of equipment a focused on the picture of Fancy and Fleur.
After what felt like hours of sketching countless rough drawings, the perfect one hit me. I quickly shot up and grabbed my pencil with my mouth and made it dance with my lower jaw and watched as it left a trail of light lead behind it's tip. I was so wrapped up in the process, that I didn't even notice the sun disappear and get replaced by the glorious moon and stood in the middle of the star infested sky.
"Finished." I said quietly. Don't know why, I was the only one-
"Hey Brushy. Whatcha doin'." Wait I forgot. Vy was here too.
"Just about to paint this." I said as she eyed it curiously.
"What is it? Whales?" She said as I let out a sigh.
"No Vy, it's Fancy Pants and Fleur."
"Fancy Pants? I DJd one of his parties. Total snooze feet to me." Vynal said as a look of boredom took over her.
"Say whatca want about Fancy. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be with Octavia." A new look took over Scratch's face… utter confusion.
"Wait,so he saved your life?" Vyanl said as I now had something that barely any pony ever got from her. Her full attention.
"You could say that. It actually an awesome story. Wanna hear it?" She couldn't have been quicker with her response.
"Okay. Let me finish with this and I'll tell you." I said shaking the light blue spraypaint and aiming at the sketched mane of Fancy Pants and… nothing. "What!? These are brand new!" I said holding my eye to the nozzle to inspect it.
"Brush, you sure you should have the can close to your face like that?"
"Vy, I am a trained professional. I know what I'm-" I was immediately cut of by a wave of searing pain fill my eyes.
I saw the spray of light blue paint splatter on his eye and him jump back in pain
"Sweet Celestia it hurts!" I saw what his eyes looked like. What used to be the white void around his pupils were now as red as blood.
"Paint, we need to wash your eyes out." Luckily I knew what to do if this type of situation. Except for paint, it was straight up jack. Same rules should imply. Right?
I guided him to the sink in which I flipped on the the faucet and held his his head under the running water then he jumped back in pain. I wonder why he did that until I saw steam rise from the water. Damnit Scratch . I could nearly hear my mom's voice until I heard a thud and Paint's screams of agony ceased. I turned to see if it was nothing. I have never been more wrong. I saw Paint, laying on the ground, with a humongous puddle of blood surrounded his head. I knelt over him to see his eyes glazed over and his breathing very, very slow. "Don't worry Paint! I'm gonna get you to the hospital!" I levitated him on my back while not only feel the warm blood stain my fur, but rushing over the art supplies and out the door. Tavi's gonna freak! I thought as I ran in the direction of Ponyville's hospital.
