//------------------------------// // The Parents Day Essay // Story: A Thousand Years // by ArtsyUnicorn //------------------------------// "Alright class, in honor of parents day we are going to write an essay about our parents!" Miss Cherilee announced to her class of fillies and colts, all that was heard in the room was the groans of laziness because none of them wanted to spend the weekend doing homework. "Miss Cherilee what if we don't know much about our parents?" Asked Apple Bloom, hoping to get out of doing any homework. "Then you can ask either your older siblings or talk to some friends about the subject" She stated, she knew exactly what else Apple Bloom had in mind. Dinky had other things in mind; did she want to talk about her real dad or The Doctor? Dinky never really knew her real dad, once he found out Derpy was pregnant with their second child he packed up and left in the middle of the night. Amethyst Star had just turned six when their dad left, so if Dinky did the paper about him and Derpy before the separation she could ask Amethyst, she just might not remember most of it. The Doctor however had been there for most of Dinky's childhood and was very close to her mom then her real dad was, suddenly Dinky's thoughts were interrupted. "Class dismissed everyone! Have a great weekend" Cherilee smiled as she started to clean the chalk board, Dinky didn't move from her seat, she had a question on her mind. "Dinky do you need something? If you’re waiting for Amethyst to pick you up you can wait outside for her" "I am waiting for Sparkler, I just have a question about the essay" She said as she moved toward her teacher’s desk, Cherilee nodded as she listened. "My real dad left before I was born so I don't know him very well, I'm afraid to ask mommy about it, but Doctor has been there for mommy and me since the beginning and he feels more like my dad. Who should I write about?" "Well sweetie, normally I would say write about your biological parents. Since you have this special connection to Doctor and he has more of a father then your birth father, then you should write this about him. I'm sure Derpy won't mind you asking and I'm pretty sure Doctor will be honored to have you write about him" Cherilee said as she gave a warm smile to the filly. "Thank you Cherilee" Dinky said as she happily trotted outside the school house as she greeted her big sister on the way out. "Well squirt got any good news for Old Sparkler?" Amethyst asked her sister. Sparkler was the nickname Dinky gave her when she was learning to talk, and the name stuck ever since for her. "Well, I have to write a paper about our parents for homework, I was thinking about doing it about mommy and Doctor though" Dinky said to her as she gave her a paper with the assignment details on it. Amethyst had a sad look in her eyes, she realized Dinky knew nothing about her dad and always considered The Doctor as her father, she decided she had to do something; she had to tell Dinky about their dad. "Well that is a good idea, but I think it's time you knew about dad. Mom said it was okay if I told you instead of her" she said as they sat on the front porch of their house, she took a deep breath and begun. "Dads name was Ponet; he had a light purple coat like yours, had golden colored hair like yours and had emerald green eyes. He was a unicorn who met mom in Canterlot where he lived" "Where does he live now?" Dinky interrupted "I think he went to Las Pegasus. Anyway he was a bit uptight and fancy, but I guess it was just that Canterlot personality, He fell in love with mom at first sight at an old bakery she used to work at and kept coming everyday just to see her. Dad asked mom out a couple months later and a few months after that mom got pregnant with me, dad was going to propose to her but he claims he never got the perfect opportunity, so mom moved from Cloudsdale to Canterlot so she could be with him. Soon after I was born things started to go downhill from then on, dad got fired from his job and mom could barely support a husband and newborn with her income, so finances and caring for me got too stressful and caused them to argue and fight a lot. When I was four dad finally got a well-paying job and mom got a second job just to help pay the rent of the old apartment, so for a year and a half later things were going pretty well and I was going to have my sixth birthday in a month, that's when dad proposed to mom and she accepted." "So dad proposed to mom before he left?" Dinky questioned before the story was finished. "Yes but let me continue, the next month was supposed to be when they got married the week before my birthday. Mom hadn't been feeling so well for a month now and she found out why, so on my birthday she announced that she was pregnant with you, I was so excited to have a sibling to play with. Dad on the other hand wasn't so happy, that night after I went to bed I heard them arguing again, I heard the bedroom door slam shut and hooves go out the front door that was slammed shut. I walked out of my room and saw mom lying on her bed crying because dad left, and he wasn't going to come back." Amethyst finished the story with a couple tears threatening to fall; Dinky looked just as sad and decided that the essay was not going to be about Ponet, he wasn't a good father leaving his bride to be and children at an early age. "Girls come inside and eat dinner, I made veggie burgers and hay fries!" Derpy exclaimed happily through the kitchen window, the smell of Derpy's cooking was always heavenly. Amethyst went over and hugged her mom and told her that Dinky now knew the truth. "Dinky I'm glad you know the truth now, I'm sorry that you have to write this essay now" Derpy sat at the table sadly; she never wanted her daughter to relive the nightmare by having to tell it in front of the class. "That’s fine mom, I don't want to do the essay on dad, I want to do it on you and Doctor!" Dinky exclaimed cheerful which made Derpy smile, she hadn't seen The Doctor in months but that’s because he was always traveling, she was just happy to know that he was there whenever she needed him. "That’s great sweetie, I can tell you that story later tonight, now eat your dinner girls!" she exclaimed, she was happy to tell the story of her and The Doctor, she just really missed him sometimes.
