Discord's Birthday

Discord's Birthday

“Sister, do you realize what is in a few days?”
“Yes, Luna, I do. I’m still contemplating asking Pinkie for help.”
“It’s probably too late by now.”
“I realize that, but she can work quickly.”
That got an eyeroll from Luna. “Celestia, you know what happened when I asked her last minute to plan your party.”
Celestia sighed. “Yes, I know. You were stuck doing everything in one day. But if we do it ourselves...”
Now it was Luna’s turn to sigh. “I know. But we shouldn’t involve her this late. Even if it means we have to throw a small party for him.”
Luna winced, but Celestia looked thoughtful. “Discord would probably like it better, I guess. I mean, we should try to surprise him. Do something he wouldn’t expect. I mean, shouldn’t we try? It’s his birthday after all,” Celestia said reasonably.
        “Ugh, I wouldn’t know. He’s your co-”
        “Luna, don’t say it! He-”
“-ltfriend,” Luna finished, despite being interrupted.
Discord materialized in front of Luna.
“Oooo~ Is somepony jealous?” Discord said, winking at Luna, causing her to groan.
“I tried to tell you. He made it so that if you said ‘coltfriend’ while talking to me, he’d know,” Celestia said from behind him. “Now, Discord, if you don’t mind, we were discussing something important.”
“Aaaaww Celly, you’re no fun. Why can’t I join the conversation?” Discord said, pouting.
“Because it’s concerning y-” Celestia cut Luna off.
“It’s nothing. It’s about what you might want for your birthday! We don’t want you to know what we’re getting you!” Celestia said quickly, hoping he would buy it. He didn’t, but he pretended he did. What he thought was that they didn’t want him around.
“Oh, well, in that case, I guess I’ll leave then….”
Even though he had already left, Celestia was still staring at the spot he had just been. “I don’t think he believed us…” she said quietly.
“Well, we can’t dwell on that. We have to set up his party. His birthday is Friday,” Luna replied, trying to calm her sister down. It almost worked for a moment.
        Almost.
“Luna, what if he thinks we hate him? What i-”
        “CELESTIA CALM THYSELF!!
Celestia blinked a few times, then realized that her sister had just yelled at her.
“I’m sorry, Celestia, but you need to calm down. He’ll be fine, just give him until Friday, okay?”
        “Okay...”

Thursday Night
Pacing always helped one think. Tonight, it was helping both Celestia and Discord. Discord was still trying to figure out the real reason they dismissed him a few days before, while Celestia was contemplating what to get him. She had been too busy to look for something, and now there were but a few hours left to think of one. Trying to think about what he liked, she had begun pacing. Every so often, she would stop to consider something or other, then she’d decide against it and continue pacing. Then she got an idea. Discord, on the other hoof, was still trying to figure out why they were avoiding him long after Celestia had fallen asleep. So long, that it was nearly morning. Eventually, however, he decided that both Luna and Celestia didn’t really like him anymore. His sleep wasn’t as peaceful as Celestia’s. Nor was it as long, for he woke up while the sun was still rising.
He grumbled as he got up to find Celestia and Luna, whether they were avoiding him or not.
He almost ran into Celestia.
Realizing who he had almost run into, however, he stammered an apology.
“Discord, what are you doing up this early? Don’t you usually sleep until ten twenty-eight?” Celestia asked, obviously surprised by this.
“Decided to change my schedule a bit.”
“What schedule?” Celestia said, teasingly.
“What, you don’t think I have one? I can be organized. You’d be surprised.”
Celestia laughed a little. “Well, speaking of surprises, I have one for you,” she said with a smile.
“Oh, do you? I’m sure that it’s not a b-”
He was cut off by a soft kiss from Celestia, which actually did surprise him.
“You talk too much sometimes,” she said, pulling away.
“Then I guess you should shut me up more often,” Discord teased.
“Perhaps I should.”

That evening
“Celestia? Where’s Discord? Isn’t he coming?” Luna asked upon seeing Celestia.
“He’s ‘preparing’ himself. For what, I have no idea…”
They didn’t wait long.
“Heeeeelllllloooo, princesses,” Discord said, kissing Celestia’s cheek. “So, what is it you wanted, again?”
Celestia looked at her sister, arching an eyebrow. Luna nodded. They moved a curtain that was behind them, and there was a rather normal looking cake. Until it exploded. Much of the frosting and pieces of cake(just plain vanilla, dyed pink) landed on both Celestia and Luna, as they were closer to it than Discord. However, he got a full face of it, causing both princesses to laugh a little.
Discord didn’t seem impressed.
“An exploding cake?! What were you thinking? Clearly, you should’ve done either a flying cake or one that would act like a dog. Exploding? The nerve!” Discord shook his head at their obliviousness.
They only laughed harder. Discord joined in their laughter after a few moments of looking distraught. “Well, this is one fine birthday, if I do say so myself,” he said, wiping a tear from one of his eyes.
“Well, I’m glad you like it, it took forever to find out how to make the cake explode at the right time. In fact, it almost ex-”
Celestia was cut off by a kiss from Discord.
“Who’s talking too much now?” he asked, teasing.
“Mmm still you,” Celestia answered, sticking out her tongue.
“Hmhmhm tempting, but no.”
Celestia smirked. “You mean, not right now.”
“Maybe, maybe not. Try again later.”
Celestia laughed. Luna rolled her eyes. “You two do realize I’m still here, right?”
“Yes, yes we do,” they said at the same time.
“If you are going to keep flirting, may I leave?”
“Luna,” Celestia started. “You could have just asked us to stop. I would’ve… No promises on Discord’s part, though.”
“No promises. None. I don’t make promises.”
Luna groaned.
“Listen to your sister, Lulu.”
DON’T CALL ME LULU!
“Yeesh, calm down, I was teasing!”
Celestia just laughed a bit as they argued.
“Alright…. Dissy!”
“What? No, if I can’t call you Lulu you can’t call me Dissy.”
Celestia laughed harder. Both Luna and Discord turned to look at her.
“What are you laughing at?” Luna asked, skeptical.
“Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.”
“....It’s us isn’t it. You’re laughing at me and Discord!”
“What? Nooooo. Really?” Celestia responded, stifling more laughter.
Luna huffed in annoyance.
“Aww, Lulu, you're so cute when you're annoyed,” Celestia teased.
Luna groaned and face hoofed. Now it was Discord’s turn to laugh.
“You two are cute when you fight. If you don’t mind me interrupting, however, I think that might just be the best gift ever.”
“You sure mine wasn’t better? I gave it to you this morning,” Celestia said, smirking.
“Oh, that was your gift?”
“Hush, you know you liked it.”
Luna cleared her throat. Celestia and Discord looked sheepish.

“And then they all exploded. The end.”
“Discord, you know that’s not what happened. If it was, you wouldn’t be here today, and neither would I,” Celestia said, nuzzling him.
“Well, I think it’s better that way.”
“You can’t make a great day better with explosions.”
“You’re not me.”
“Touche.”
