Chapter 1: the Spell

Twilight Sparkle was sitting in the library one afternoon pouring over a book she borrowed from the palace in Canterlot. It was entitled, The Magic of Fiction. You see, Rainbow Dash's birthday was coming up and Twilight wanted it to be extra special; therefore, she planned to bring Dash's favorite hero, Daring Doo, out of the book for a day. She almost had the spell too. She just needed One key component that seemed to evade her.
Spike walked inside from the rain the pegasi had arranged carrying a number of soggy letters. “Of all the days to make it rain, it had to be the only day you get mail the normal way. What's with all these letters, Twilight?”
“Just put those down on the little table over there,” She motions vaguely toward her right without looking up. “Pinkie said she wanted to use my mailbox. Something about a gift for Dash.”
Just then, Pinkie Pie bursted out of a potted plant. “Nuh-uh! It's the most awesome, amazing, super-duper-aliooper gift for Rainbow in the history of Equestria ever! Gimme those! She nabbed the letters out of startled Spike's hands and retreated back into the potted plant. Twilight didn't look up once.
Recovering himself, Spike walked over to Twilight. “So what are you doing Twilight? You've had your face buried in that book for a week.”
“Well, you see, I've been-GASP!She stood up suddenly and ran past Spike, causing him to spin and fall on the floor. She began speaking excitedly while throwing a flurry of books behind her. “Why didn't I see it before? It only makes sense, but- no. That's not it. It's more like- yes! Wait, no. I guesse it's more like when, I mean yeah, but who'd have thought. The point is it's so simple yet, HERE IT IS!” She pulled down a large tome with her unicorn magic and a bit more strain than usual. She flipped it open and stopped on a page depicting a unicorn in a mini whirlwind beside a cave wall. “The first recorded instance of this spell. Apparently it was used to make pictures of food become actual food before Hearthswarming Eve. I wonder why the unicorns ever stopped using it. No matter. I'll just test it out quickly. Spike, can you-”
CRASH! Rainbow Dash flew through the door, tackling Pinkie Pie who had apparently been outside instead of in the plant. “OMIGOSH OMIGOSH OMIGOSH OMIGOSH! Thank you SOOO much Pinkie Pie! You are the best friend EVER! Twilight! Come here!”
Caught off guard, Twilight hastily hid what she was working on under a number of books she had pulled off the shelves. “Haven't you ever heard of knocking?”
“What's all the commotion?”
“Ideed, I could here you all the way from my boutique”
“Umm, I don't mean to sound mean but, what's the noise? if you don't mind my asking.”
Apple Jack, Rarity, and Fluttershy walked into the library's now open door while Rarity used a spell to dry them off.
Rainbow Dash flew up to the ceiling and began shouting. “Pinkie Pie here is what's up! She managed to get Spitfire, captain of the Wonder Bolts, to come to Ponyville for my birthday! Can you believe her?” With this, Rainbow Dash did a loop and began talking excitedly to herself.
Pinkie stood up from the pile of books she had been knocked into. “It was easy. I just sent her a ton of letters talking about what a great flyer Rainbow is and asked her really nicely to come over. She was more than happy to, remembering all that Rainbow's done for her.”
Twilight began thinking to herself. “Hey Dash, if you like what Pinkie's doing, then you'll love what I have planned for you.”
Pinkie pressed her head against Twilight's. “No, silly. You can't tell her what you're getting her for her birthday... It'll ruin the surprise!”
“Don't worry, Pinkie. If I don't show her this now, she'd be too interested in Spitfire to spend time with anypony else. Gather around everypony! Spike, get me that copy of Daring Doo. She cleared the books from on top of the tome as Spike dropped the book in front of her. “Since you'll be spending all of tomorrow with Spitfire, you might as well spend all of today with your favorite story book hero. I have a spell here that will let me bring her here. Then she can go back into the book after.”
All of the ponies plus Spike gathered around in excitement as Twilight started the spell. Her horn began to glow as the Adventures of Daring Doo rose into the air. A forceful wind blew open all the doors and windows as a whirlwind formed around the purple unicorn. Pages began ripping themselves out of various books and formed the shape of a pegasus. More flew out and formed the shapes of various other ponies.
Pinkie started twitching sporadically. “I don't like the feeling of this. Maybe you should stop, Twilight.”
Twilight couldn't hear her, though. Her eyes had gone a bright white and something seemed off. The paper ponies circled in the air around the six mares. All of them were lifted into the air and green lightning flashed from the book.
BANG! Just as suddenly as it had began, it was over; the paper constructs had burst, and Spike was left lying unconscious on the ground. The six ponies were no where to be seen. Instead, a dog-like creature with proper hands on all four legs and an extra one on its tail was standing in the middle of the library surrounded by five felines.
“Yes, this is a much more likeable environment. What say we see what we can find? I'd love the idea of a few riches to decorate my new home, but that can wait until we meet the neighbors.”
With that, the creature left the library and made his way to the Ever Free Forest. “I believe this will prove quite enjoyable.”
