In the Everfree on Nightmare Night

I could still hear the old mare laughing. She is still chasing me and I am terrified. I thought I was as brave as Rainbow Dash, but I’m not. I tell you how it all happened.

It was Nightmare Night and we, the cutie mark crusaders, decided to do truth or dare. “That was a good dare, Sweetie Belle,” Applebloom said coming back all wet. Sweetie Belle and I laughed. “Alright girls I have a good dare for you Scootaloo,” Applebloom said.

“You know I’m up to the challenge,” I said with pride. Applebloom had an evil grin on her face. “Come on Applebloom,” I said, “tell me.” She whispered something to Sweetie Belle. Sweetie Belle had an evil grin on her face as well.

“Do you know the legend of the old mare?” Applebloom asked me. I gave her a look of confusion. “Well,” Applebloom said, “it says that this old mare eats young ponies.” I just rolled my eyes, thinking it was a silly joke. All I wanted was to hear what the dare was going to be.

“We dare you to go in the Everfree and go find the old mare,” Sweetie Belle said.

“Alright girls,” I said with confidence, “I will and I’m not scared by the way.” They laughed as I walked into the woods. “Those girls think I’m not tough enough well I’ll prove them wrong,” I told myself. Now I wish I had just said no because I had no idea what was getting into.
Suddenly out of nowhere, I found a little cottage. It wasn’t Zecora’s cottage, it was built differently. I decided to knock on the door. Before I could, I felt the air start to get warm. The environment started to became eerie. Suddenly, I heard a twig snap. “Who’s there?” I asked shivering.

“Well hello young filly,” an old mare said coming toward me. She looked kind and trustworthy. “What are you doing out here late at night?” she asked me. I didn’t know what to say. Would I tell her I was out there because of a dumb dare my friends told me to do?

“I just got lost,” I lied. She smiled and welcomed me into her cottage. “Thank you for letting me in,” I said, “I was getting scared.” She walked toward a big pot hanging over the fireplace. She poured something in and started to stir.

“What is your name young filly?” she asked.

“Scootaloo,” I replied. She tasted to soup and then grabbed a bowl from her shelf. She dipped in the bowl and got a bowlful of soup. She placed the bowl right in front of me. “Thank you,” I said. I took one sip the soup. Suddenly I felt dizzy. I finally fainted on the floor.

When I woke up and I was tied in a chair. The room was dark with only one light over me. I noticed that I was still in the cottage. “Where is she?” I asked myself. Then, the old mare came out of the shadows. She had a clout covering half her body.

“Well hello little one,” the mare said with a grin. I tried to get out of there but I was locked in tight. “Are you trying to escape?” she asked. I nodded my head; tears were running down my face. Then suddenly, I heard a snap. It was the strap that was once holding me, it had snapped. I leaped out the chair and tried to find an exit before the mare would catch me again.

“There’s a window and it’s open,” I said to myself cheerfully. I leaped out of the window and ran through the woods. It took a very long time until I could see Ponyville again. But, I heard the mare calling out my name. And here we are back to how I began my story.

Instead of running for Ponyville, I ran deeper into the Everfree. “Come back filly,” the old mare yelled. The sound of the voice sounded closer which made me run faster. “Scootaloo!” she yelled. She was right behind me now.

“Sweetie belle,” I yelled, “Applebloom!” I knew they couldn’t hear me, but I yelled their names anyway. The old mare kept following me. Then, I felt something grab me. It was a branch. I started to scream as I realized she was closer than ever. “No!” I screamed. I saw her face.

“There you are!” she yelled. I struggled to get off the branch. I finally got loose. Not thinking, I ran straight toward a tree and my face slammed again it. “Trying to get away,” the old mare said, “I’m not going to let you go so easy.”

My nose started to bleed. I didn’t care, I just kept on running. I finally saw Ponyville and my friends standing there. My nose bleed more and more. When they saw me, they screamed. “Applebloom, Sweetie Belle!” I screamed. They stopped, realizing it was me.

“What happened to you?” Applebloom asked looking at the blood running down my nose. Sweetie Belle couldn’t stop staring at my nose. She stared so long that she didn’t say a single word.

“I was chased by the old mare,” I said. Applebloom’s eyes widened. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“She is right behind you,” she whispered. I turned my head slowly. She was smiling the creepiest smile I’d ever heard. We all screamed and ran in different directions. I ran toward a bush and his behind it. I heard Applebloom and Sweetie Belle scream. It came from the farmhouse. When I got to the farmhouse, I almost fainted.

“Hello Scootaloo,” the old mare said. My friends were laid on the floor dead. “Want to join your friends?” she asked. Tears ran down my face and I was breathing heavily.

“Shut up!” I yelled. I pounced on the old mare. She suddenly disappeared in a flash. Then, I heard breathing coming from behind me. “Applebloom,” I yelled, “Sweetie Belle!” They were alive!

I have no idea what had happened that Nightmare Night. But I will tell you one thing, I still hear the laughing of the old mare.
