Moon and Stars

Chapter three: Waving our path

After having swiftly escaped Twilight in our chambers, we weren’t really sure what to do. We flew and trotted around aimlessly for a while before finally ending up in a small underground library only we and our sister knew of. While in there, we picked up some old photo albums belonging to my sister and began looking through them. Soon enough, we caught ourselves staring slightly too hard at the pictures involving Twilight.

She truly is an astonishing young mare...

Continuing to look through the albums, we felt more and more impressed by what the purple alicorn had managed to accomplish in such a short time. Some things we were familiar with, such as the Grand Galloping Gala ticket fiasco and the one with the zebra mare living in the Everfree Forest, Zecora. An almost shocking insight hit us as we put aside yet another album.

None of this, of all the things Twilight and her friends have accomplished, would have happened if we hadn’t become Nightmare Moon.

However, this knowledge didn’t bother us the same way we first thought it would. Quite the opposite, in fact. As we gazed at page after page of friendship letters and pictures of Twilight and her friends, we realized that Nightmare Moon had actually done something good. She had brought these friends together. Yes, if not for Nightmare Moon, maybe Discord would rule this land, spreading his chaos everywhere, or the changelings would be spreading across the nation, sucking the love out of everypony.

We switched page and were greeted by a picture of Twilight, ‘Tia, and two foreigners, who from their looks were most likely Saddle Arabian delegates. The picture reminded us of something, something important that we’ve forgotten.

Oh, what could it be? Wait...Saddle Arabia...the delegates! The Saddle Arabian delegates are arriving today and we are supposed to be there to greet them with ‘Tia and....Twilight.

Remembering that Twilight would be there, we considered not showing up. Celestia could surely come up with an excuse…

No, what are we thinking? Equestria always must come first, before any personal matters. Surely Twilight must understand and respect that.

And so, we made up our mind, we quickly put the albums back in the shelves and left the library, hurrying as to not be late for the meeting with the delegates.

We reached the castle at the right moment, the royal carriage for the delegates was just arriving at the front entrance. Quickly, we rushed into our room, preparing ourself as fast as we could before heading down again. Tia and Twilight were waiting in the main hall, smiling at us. Before we could say anything, they took us between them and we walked outside to greet the delegates. Twilight at our side wasn’t really helping.

She looks really nice, and her fur is… No, stop!

They smiled the whole time and we grew curious as to why they would be so happy. We ignored it during the meeting as well as we could, but the dinner with the delegates left us kind of flattered…

Twilight sat down right next to us, still that lovely smile on her muzzle…

Wait, did we just described her smile as being lovely?

Anyways… during the whole dinner, she seemed to accidentally brush her wings softly at our sides or give us a nice view of her cutie mark. It just wasn’t fair, and we were fairly certain we had an idea of her intentions after this.

The delegates thanked us after dinner for the excellent evening and left to their rooms in the guest tower as we saw our chance. We rushed out of the hall and were about to reach our room as one wing stopped us.

“You won’t escape this time, dear sister,” a familiar voice said, then we felt the tingly feeling of a teleportation spell on us.

We appeared in Twilight’s room, our sister at our side. Looking with desperation at the door, we saw the protection spells on it, just like on every window. There was no escape. The next try was frantic, but we tried nonetheless. As our teleportation spell took hold we appeared in our own room, just to be instantly re-teleported into Twilight’s, smashing onto the floor muzzle first.

Twilight came out of her corner, staring at us, “We will talk, and this time you will stay here and listen, Princess Luna.”

Our mind raced, trying to find a solution.

This can never end well...

"You have no right to demand such thing of us, Twilight Sparkle," We said with all the authority we could muster.

"But we can, dearest sister," Celestia said, adapting her speching pattern and using the royal 'we'.

Hearing her use the royal 'we' had an oddly relaxing effect on us, and it didn't take us many seconds to figure out that this was what she had been going for.

Through using the royal 'we', she reminded us of old times and made us calm down.

"Pr- Luna. Listen to me. I should have been honest with you from the beginning, but I wasn't, and there's nothing to do about that. But I can be honest now. I love you, with all my heart. I didn't want to tell you earlier because I was just a normal unicorn, nowhere near good enough to be a royal lover. But now I am an alicorn, and the situation is different. I can be with you, and I want to. I’m really sorry for what you might have discovered in my dreams and I know that it must have scared you at that moment, but could you give me a chance? I would be honored by even the slightest one.”

We were shocked at Twilight's bluntness and tried to come up with an appropriate answer, but couldn't find the right words to do so. One one hoof, we wanted to scream 'NO' and try to flee once more, but at the same time we wanted to scream 'YES'.

Did we just think about screaming Yes?

Thankfully, our mind was still clear, so it acted automatically.

“No.”

Twilight just stood in front of us, jaw falling down. She simply stood still forseveral moment before she began to cry. Our sister shot us a glare that we couldn’t misunderstand, and just as we wanted to approach Twilight, she covered herself with a bright purple shield, which we promptly slammed into snout first.

“Twilight, please let us explain…” we began, but the sound of a ‘plop’ disturbed us.

The purple alicorn vanished in a long-range teleportation spell. She fled from us.

We faced our sister, trying to say something, but the angry gaze we received kept our muzzle firmly shut. There were barely any moments where we have seen our sister that angry, and we gulped.

“Princess Luna,” her voice boomed through the room, “We thought that you would be wise and gentle enough to take proper care of our former student. But it seems that we have been proven wrong.”

“Please, Sister. We want to mention our apologizes for this situation and-” we started, but were quickly interrupted.

“Enough! We don’t want to hear anymore of this. Now speak. What do you feel about Twilight Sparkle?” she demanded, still using the voice.

What do we feel about her? She is smart, funny, willing to learn and she enjoys our night. She saved us.

Our heart was beating louder and louder while we thought about everything we felt about Twilight. Then our mind wandered around various nights we caught her enjoy the moon and the stars, then the dream…

We… We…

“We might feel more for her than we were aware of, dear Sister,” we continued, surprised by ourselves.

‘Tia seemed happy with this answer and approached us, nuzzling our neck.

“So, do you know what to do now?” she asked us.

“We do, but we don’t know where to find her Sister,” we stated, ears folding back.

She smiled wholeheartedly at us and winked, “You will find what you seek in Ponyville,” she said before turning and leaving the room, leaving us with a beating heart and a lot of confusion.

We gazed around us at the beautiful view. Right up front was the small cozy countryside town best known as 'Ponyville'. A little further to the right, we saw the big Apple farm which was built on lands our sister herself had granted a family of seed collectors long ago.

We heard one member of the ponies who originally was given the land by 'Tia is still alive...perhaps we should visit him or her one day...

The wind took us on a smooth ride into the center of Ponyville where we could finally rest our wings a bit. We flew here faster than we had ever before and we just couldn’t tell why. Maybe Twilight had more of an effect on us than we could see before.

With our thoughts wandering as they were, we nearly missed the library entirely. The library was dark, no lights on in the windows and no movements around the branches. We made our way across the ground until we were stationed at the door, not a single evidence of life on the inside.

Maybe our Sister was wrong about this?

We shook our head in disagreement with our own thoughts.

No. Twilight will be inside, and we will tell her how we feel, once and for all.

We quickly took to the night skies for a few short moments before we landed on the balcony and quietly opened the door. It was dark in the room, but being the Princess of the Night, we saw everything as clear as if the room had been filled with daylight. On the bed, which was located not far from us, was something that looked like a pile of blankets laying perfectly still. Moving closer, however, we soon realized that it was not a pile of blankets. It was a pony. A purple alicorn to be exact. Now standing next to the bed, we could hear her cry. It was a heart wrenching sound, crushing our heart into smaller and smaller pieces with each sob. We stood there for several moments, unnoticed, just listening to her crying and feeling our own heart be crushed into pieces.

Just like we destroyed her heart when we rejected her...

Deciding we couldn't stand there and wait forever, we spoke up.

"Twilight Sparkle...is that you?"

The purple pile on the bed moved, mumbling something we couldn't hear.

"Twilight Sparkle! We've come here to offer you an apology."

At first, there was no response. But then she spoke.

"I. It's I, not we. The royal 'we' was taken out of practice five hundred years ago."

“We… I know that, Twilight Sparkle. I learned it at that Nightmare Night, remember? But with our… I mean my subjects and all those memories…“ I said, trying to find words, but to no use.

She is right, and somehow it is easy to change because of her...

“I’ve come here to offer you an apology, Twilight. What I did was cruel and I did it without thinking. We… I might feel likewise for you, Twilight Sparkle.”

The lavender mare looked at me with wide eyes, before wincing, “If this is some kind of sick joke, it is not funny, Princess Luna.”

“I am not joking, Twilight,” I tried to say with as much confidence I could bring up.

Silence, then one exclamation, “Prove it!”

What does she mean by that? Should I hug her? No… Kiss her??

I smiled and leaned in and nearly expected that Twilight would back up, but instead she raised forward, meeting me half-way. Our muzzles met, and it felt good. Better than I can ever remember it feeling. Yes, this was right. Twilight was right. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the moment, wishing to make it last forever. Which, as an alicorn, actually would be possible. Finally breaking the kiss, I spoke up.

"Twilight Spa...Twily," I experimented, softly smiling, "If you do not disagree, I'd like to invite you for a Hearts and Hooves day dinner tomorrow. Be in Canterlot Castles garden at sunset if you wish to accept my invitation."

Wait, did I just ask her out on a Hearts and hooves day date?

Not waiting for any response, we… I got out on the balcony, spreading my wings and flew away, leaving Ponyville and Twilight Sparkle far behind.
