Here is a story that few know of. 

During the battle with Nightmare Moon, Celestia was struck down, as she laid unconscious, an Earth pony stallion stood up to the Nightmare and fought her. Celestia soon woke and used the Elements of Harmony to Banish the dark mare in the moon. 

After learning of the stallion's actions, Celestia became inspired to make him a defender of the nation, a Ranger of Equestria. But the stallion declined, instead he told her to use the idea with somepony else. 

Soon after the stallion left,  returning to his home. Celestia did just as he said to do. And so for the next millennium the solar princess chose pony after pony of every type to defend Equestria. There has been one, and only one, pony at a time as per the stallion's request. She chose them based on their personalities or their talent. Some she regarded as friends, others a bit more than that, some she disliked, and a few, very few, she's hated.

And so began the Equestrian Rangers.
