Derpy and the Ring

%i% Derpy and the Ring

It was a warm equestrian day just like any other, a grey coated mail-mare was gently flying over the crystal clear water of the Ponyville pond. It had been a good day for Derpy, she hadn't argued with Dinky about going to school and there had been no mishaps while delivering the Mail. All of a sudden there was a frantic yelling as Rainbow Dash flew through the main town, pushing an overweight storm-cloud in-front of her. Suddenly flustered Derpy attempted to fly out of the way, but her heavy mail bag over balanced her- putting the grey pegasus straight in the path of the oncoming storm-cloud.
*ooff*
"Sorry Derpy!" yelled Rainbow as she blasted over the lake and past Derpy- sending the mail-mare into a downward spiral. Hitting the ground with a 'thump'
"Oh dear" Derpy said aloud, looking around at the mess of strewn letters that had landed all over the ground around her.
Nearly half an hour later, just as she was crawling over the branch to retrieve the last letter that had landed on the edge in a precarious position, there was a loud crack before Derpy felt herself falling for the second time that day. With a loud 'splash' Derpy landed on her rump in the water - the letter flitting down and landing on her mane. Just as she was about to get out of the pond Derpy saw a glinting on the floor under the water. Splashing loudly as she trotted through the water Derpy soon saw it was a golden ring. Figuring that it might be some horn decoration belonging to a unicorn Derpy put it in her bag to take back to the Ponyville post office- in case somepony had lost it.
While flying on her daily rounds Derpy began to hear a whispering from her side, but upon turning around she saw no-pony in whispering range. Then again the whispering came from her side.
"Hello is there anyone there?" Derpy said aloud- getting a few looks from ponies below her. When she looked in the bag the whispering became louder. As the whispering increased Derpy looked in the bag and said
"Shush bag" and then continued.
When she got back to the post office and asked if anyone had lost or come asking for a shiny gold ring all the other mail ponies said no. The Ring felt heavy to Derpy so she figured it probably had some worth and decided she ought take it to a jewelers to determine its worth. Finding an old necklace chain at the bottom of her mail bag Derpy hung the ring around her neck. Remembering that she was picking up Dinky that afternoon Derpy thought that she could maybe sell the ring and buy some muffins for her and her daughter.
Waiting at the gates Derpy began to get nervous when she realized that there were lots of ponies staring at her- It was not often that Derpy collected her daughter from school at normal times, Dinky often had clubs or went straight to friends houses so Derpy automatically assumed the other mothers hadn't seen her eyes before. Just as the grey pegasus felt about ready to burst into tears a Rarity came over, putting a re-assuring hoof over her shoulder, saying
"It's alright dear, we're not looking at your eyes it's just that... that wonderful ring around your neck" the white unicorn said, her voice trailing off as her vision became fixated with the glowing ring around Derpy's neck.
"I found it at the pond earlier" Derpy replied, wiping her eyes, giving Rarity a thankful look. At that precise moment the ring of the school bell unleashed a small herd of foals, all rushing to their respective guardians.
"Swing by my boutique later- it looks very valuable I would happily buy it off you!" Rarity said before she was swamped by three foals screaming and yelling something about a necromancy cutie mark.
"Hey mom!" Dinky said, walking up to her mother through the crush of foals and carers - all eager to leave as soon as possible
"Hey sweetie- you wanna buy some muffins!" Derpy replied, putting one wing around her foal as they walked towards town.
"Yeah sounds grea- Hey when did you get the cool ring?" Dinky was cut off mid sentence as the ring around her mothers neck caught the foals eye.
"If you want to I'll let you carry it" Derpy said, lifting the ring from around her neck and placing it around her daughter
"Thanks mum!" Dinky giggled in reply, eager to look at the ring now around her neck.
While the pair walked from the school to cake shop the young foal began to feel the urge to put the ring on her horn, growing ever stronger as she continued walking with her mother.
"Hey mum- do you mind if I try this on my horn, it'll only be for a minute..." pleaded Dinky to her mother
"It's fine sweet-heart" Derpy answered back
"But I want it ba-... Dinky!" Looking left to right the panic stricken mother looked around desperately for her foal.
"I'm here mum!" The foal tried to tell here mother, but soon realized she could not be heard. Taking the ring of her head to give it back to her mother Dinky suddenly re-materialized in the center of a slowly growing crowd trying to help the grey pegasus that was her mother.
"Gah! Oh Dinky sweetie you gave me such a fright - perhaps I should carry the ring from now on" and the two continued on their way.
When the two walked into Sugarcube Corner (following their traumatic experience) they were greeted by Pinkie Pie who seemed to materialize beside them the moment they stepped hoof in the shop.
"Hiya- So what can I get ya?" Pinkie said, pulling a notepad from nowhere then looking expectantly at the two customers.
"Two muffins please" Derpy replied after a moments thought
"Oh, oh! Can my one be blueberry?" Dinky interrupted, looking eagerly at both of the older mares standing next to her.
"Sure kiddo - I'll be right back" Pinkie said before disappearing behind into the kitchen
"So where do you want to sit my little muffin?" Derpy said to her daughter, looking round for a spare table. She then followed her daughter over to a spare table outside in the sunshine. Moments later the crazed pink party pony re-materialized and gave them their muffins.
"Hey watch this" Derpy said, nudging her daughter. The grey pegasus took the ring off the chain around her daughters neck and put it on the muffin saying;
"Mr Muffin will you marry me?" Blinking in a pretty matter, as she watched her daughter burst into fits of hysteria. And with that Derpy Hooves at the chocolate chip muffin, ring and all.
