The Equalizers: The Balance of Good and Evil

by the silver-maned pony

Chp 1: Progress Update

Evil will always exist. No matter how much people beg, cry, or fight back, Evil will always be around. The only thing people can do is decide who will fill this necessary Evil. So, why don’t we fill the role?
-Funeral Taus, on the eve of Nightmare Moon’s rebellion

Canterlot was in its usual, prosperous motion. Families were enjoying themselves in the many parts of the metropolis, the economy was great, and the police were doing a fine job. Unfortunately, many people chose to forget why the Canterlot police was one of the most prestigious defense force in Equestria.

The center of Canterlot was known as the ‘calm’ zone. It was called that way because it was the only part of Canterlot that wasn’t packed with skyscrapers or freeways. It was mainly surrounded by small strip malls, shops, and stands of all kinds.

One of the shops was a café. Outside the café were small white tables where couples sat and enjoyed small cups of coffee. However, one of the tables was not occupied by a couple. It was taken by two women in sunglasses and black suits. One of the women was tall, had smooth skin, and waist-length multi-colored hair. The other woman was a bit younger, shorter, stockier, and had shoulder-length white hair.

The two stared at each other intensely before the white-haired pointed toward the flower stand a few yards away. She said, “Luna is talking to the seller. We seriously need to teach that girl to talk quieter. I heard her the moment I sat down.”

The older woman smiled, “Good work. Now, tell me how she would have killed you, Silver.”

The woman, Silver, mused over this instead of looking horrified. She then said, “I’m guessing she would have snuck behind me and used her Garrote Wire to strangle me, or she would try to use her Taurus PT92 with silencer and shoot me in the head from a distance. I’m guessing she is still using the same gun you gave her at her initiation, Celestia.”

“Yes, she does like that gun.” Celestia said fondly, “I think she even keeps it under her pillow when she sleeps.”

“That’s either sweet, creepy, or practical.” Silver said with a grin. She then leaned forward, “Okay, your turn. How would I have had you killed?”

Celestia rolled her eyes good naturedly, “Come now, Silver, everyone knows what you would do. I’m guessing you’d have Ezra go on top of one of the buildings with his AW rifle. He’s probably been staring at me for the past couple of minutes.”

As though to respond, a small, red dot appeared on the middle of the table and made its way onto Celestia’s forehead. Silver saw the dot and chuckled. She then brought the cuff of her sleeve to her lips and said, “Simmer down, Ezra.”

The red dot stayed on Celestia’s forehead for a second longer before it disappeared. Celestia chuckled, “Oh how I enjoy these little games we play. I’m guessing Ezra also enjoys these types of games.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me.” Silver said as she pinched the bridge of her nose.

Celestia grinned, “So how short is that leash you have him on now?”

Silver sighed, “What do you think? He asked me to give him more responsibilities, so I sent him on a simple scouting mission to tail some new gangsters trying to start their operations here. I told him to just follow them and to not engage them. I got a call from him only an hour later about how to stop an electrical fire and how to reattach an arm.”

Celestia gave a small gasp, “Was he okay?”

“It wasn’t his arm that needed reattaching.” Silver said, “Anyways, most of the gangsters were killed, except for the leader, who managed to get away. After all that, Ezra had the guts to blame me for giving him such an idiotic mission.”

It was then that Silver clapped her hand over her left ear. She then pulled out an earpiece, which was emitting loud noises.

“That’s Ezra, isn’t it.” Celestia said.

Silver sighed, “Yep, and he’s talking up a storm.” She then brought her cuff in front of her lips, “You know that you are completely at fault.” Silver placed the earpiece back to her ear, “Uh huh…yeah…you’re an idiot…uh huh…okay.” She looked around and signaled for a waiter.

“Are you hungry?” Celestia asked.

“No, Ezra is the one that’s hungry.” Silver said. She asked the waiter for a lemon custard before sending him off. She turned back to Celestia, “I swear that I am too easy on that guy.”

“Well you two are childhood friends, right?”

“Don’t remind me. Anyways, enough with sub-plots, let’s get down to business.”

“I agree.” Celestia said, “I am assuming this is important for calling me out of the blue and asking me to come here. You know Regents aren’t exactly supposed to meet without a formal agreement on where and when.”

“I know, but this doesn’t have to do with the usual business. It’s a personal matter.”

Celestia leaned forward, “Is everything alright?”

Silver looked around her surroundings, but no one was paying the least bit attention to them. She reached inside her suit and pulled out a folder. She passed it to Celestia, “Please examine it.”

Celestia took the folder and spent a couple of minutes flipping through the pages. She then looked up, “Okay, but may I ask how this is a personal matter?”

Silver raised an eyebrow, “Did you read it?”

“Yes. It’s just a regular eviction mission. A couple of mobsters try to take some territory for themselves, so we drive them off. How is this personal?”

Silver sighed, “My God, how do you not get it? Did you see the leader of this little group of mobsters? He goes by the name Demonio. Apparently, he’s some sort of boogeyman from where he comes from, so he thinks he’s good enough to come into our territory. I want your team to go down to their little warehouse down at the shipyard, and do what you do best.”

Celestia stared at Silver for a little longer before giving her a knowing smile, “Now I see why this is a personal matter. You want to see how well the girls are doing now. You know, you can always just visit them.”

“I know, but it will just be all talking and no action.”

“No action can sometimes be a good thing.”

Silver clicked her tongue, annoyed, “All I want to do is see if the girls are still as good as I last remember, and if I ask them to do this mission, they’ll know I’ll be watching and all they will do is showboat and not use their full potential.”

Celestia looked at Silver with kind eyes, “Don’t worry, the girls are doing well under my guidance.”

“Not to insult you Celestia, but you aren’t the one that became the Instructor. I did.”

There was a short pause after this and then Celestia said in a tense voice, “Be that as it may, they have been in my team for the past 8 months. And, not to toot my own horn, but they were the only team that was qualified to use the E.L.E.M.E.N.T.S prototype.”

“This is why I need to know if they are ready!” Silver said loudly, which caused a couple of people to look curiously in her direction. Silver, however, didn’t care. She continued, “Look, just please tell them to do this mission, and don’t tell them I’ll be watching them." She then sighed and looked at Celestia earnestly, "Please, just do this one thing for me.”

Celestia leaned back on her chair, “I’m sorry, but I just wouldn’t feel right lying to my team-”

Silver leaned over the table and brought her face inches from Celestia’s. The white hair women's eyes were no longer pleading and she said softly, “Do this or else I’ll tell all of the other Regents about your weekend with Disc-”

Celestia’s eyes widened instantly, she clapped her hands over Silver’s mouth, and she said hurriedly, “Fine! Just keep your mouth shut!”

Silver stepped back and smiled broadly, “I’m glad we were able to come to an agreement. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go reserves seats to see if the girls are really ready to use the prototypes.”

Silver walked away, whistling tunefully with her hands in her pockets. Celestia remained in her seat with her mouth hanging opened from Silver’s underhanded move. It was then that someone pulled a chair next to Celestia and sat down. The newcomer was another woman with dark blue hair.

“You know, I can still get her.” The woman said, “I can strangle her before anyone notices.”

“I would advise against it, Luna.” Celestia said.

Luna stared at her sister indignantly, “Are you really going to let that woman control you?”

“I’m not in a position to argue and you’re not in a position to take Silver out.” Celestia said calmly.

“Why not?!”

Celestia pointed to her own forehead and Luna saw a red dot. The blue haired sister growled, “He’s still looking.”

“I doubt he will stop until Silver is far away from here.” Celestia said in amused tone, “It’s actually kind of adorable how Ezra acts like a loyal puppy.”

“More like an annoying Chihuahua.” Luna said as she held her hand in front of the red dot. She then held up her middle finger in the direction from where the laser came from.

“Very mature.” Celestia said, ruffling her sister’s hair. As Luna giggled, Celestia pulled out a cellphone from her jacket and dialed forty-two. She held the phone to her ear and only had to wait for the second ring before someone answered, “When, where, and what should I bring?”

Celestia smiled, “Eager as always, Twilight.”
