//------------------------------// // The Whisper From Miles Away // Story: The Rarest Kind // by Twisted Limbic //------------------------------// AN: So a bit about this story and myself. Recently I went through some troubled times with relationships and school and what not. Things were looking down for me and I was very sad. I started staying home from school. A friend suggested watching My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. I thought it was a joke. Go and find out it was the most amazing show ever created. Watching it made me feel so much better. I decided to make this little thing as a tribute to the show and its fans. A bit of a thank you, if you will. I also wanted to include my two favorite ponies, Fluttershy and Rarity, but wanted to keep it age friendly for the younger fans. And this was written while listening to Mumford and Sons' Sigh No More album, so it drifted into romance somehow. Nothing drastic, just a little fluffy. And like I said, this is very short, this note is probably longer than the story itself! Also, don't expect much, I'm failing my English class -.- ---------- Fluttershy laid down in her bed, staring out her window, the light pitter-patter of rain on the glass lulling her into a calm state, despite the fact that she was feeling rather lonely. She let out a nearly silent breath, and ignored it when she felt a tiny, soft, ball of warmth lay down beside her. She let out a slow sigh, her ears folding back. "Thank you, Angel Bunny," she quietly said. She curled up into a fetal position around Angel, tucking her snout beneath her hind leg. She let out another sigh. The day had been hard on the poor pegasus, as this particular day always had been. It was Hearts and Hooves day, and yet she received not a single valentine from anypony. Not even her friends. It was almost as saddening as Nightmare Night, when she did not partake at all in the festivities. While Nightmare Night frightened her, she felt quite the opposite of Hearts and Hooves day. She longed for the love and comfort provided by another pony. However, she knew that nopony in their right mind would approach her with the object of meeting a potential lover. She was far too shy, timid and frail, not to mention that she wasn't much to look at. She could barely stand sharing a room with somepony for ten minutes, let alone a bed. The shower of rain fueled her depression. She knew that the pegasi scheduled it late to add to the romantic setting, but it only served as a cruel reminder of her loneliness. She was startled by slow knocking on her door. Sensing that it wasn't urgent, she took her time getting downstairs. She regretted that when she opened the door to see soaking wet Rarity. Her hair had lost it's bounce, and now rested in it's natural, slightly curled style. "Oh my, Rarity, come in, come in!" Fluttershy raised her voice to what most would consider a library appropriate volume. The shy pegasus then noticed the gentle smile on Rarity's lips, and the basket she held in her mouth. Careful not to trail mud, Rarity entered the cottage. She set down the basket and closed the door while Fluttershy ran off and returned with a towel at a speed that would make Rainbow Dash jealous. Fluttershy wrapped the towel around her finicky friend. "Thank you, darling," Rarity said, the smile never leaving her lips. She nudged the basket she'd set on the floor with the edge of her hoof, "This is for you." Fluttershy opened her mouth to speak, but stopped short as she noticed the pink card tied at the base of the wicker basket's handle. There was a heart on it, and her name written in cursive, the dark ink beginning to run. Rarity lowered her head in slight embarrassment, "I forgot about the rain scheduled, so I apologize in advance if anything inside is damp." Fluttershy smiled, and, ignoring the fact that she would get wet, hugged her generous friend. "Thank you, Rarity. Would you... would you stay with me tonight? I-I mean, if you don't want to then that's okay, too. I just d-don't want to be alone." Rarity returned the hug, "Of course I'll stay with you, dear." "Th-thank you. It means a lot to me." Fluttershy picked up the basket, and carried it up the stairs to her room. Rarity dried off with the towel, and followed the pegasus. By the time she reached the top of the stairs, Fluttershy had opened her valentines card, and silently read the single, corny line inside. Fluttershy giggled lightly, and felt the bed shift as Rarity climbed up beside her. Rarity felt herself laughing too, "It's cheesy, I realize, but..." Fluttershy nuzzled the unicorn, "I think it's cute." She set the card down, and opened the basket, revealing a few Sugarcube Corner pastries, and a small, purple velvet box, the kind that one would normally find a wedding ring within. Naturally, the pegasus went for the box first. She sent a curious glance from the box, to the ever eager pony beside her. Rarity moved closer, their sides coming together and newfound warmth spreading through the both of them. Fluttershy slowly opened the box, and gasped. It was a jade, butterfly-shaped brooch. In the center of the brooch, making up the body of the butterfly, was a diamond. Fluttershy's jaw dropped, "It's... It's beautiful." The now blushing unicorn slowly nodded, but her eyes weren't on the pendant, but instead on Fluttershy. "Happy Hearts and Hooves day, Fluttershy." Fluttershy slowly turned to the white unicorn. Rarity, in an uncharacteristic display of shyness, would not meet her eyes. Fluttershy smiled, and pressed a kiss to the tip of Rarity's nose. The unicorn could only blush furiously in response. Silently, they laid together, the pitter-patter of the rain on the window brought a new feeling to the shy pegasus. Love. Fluttershy smiled contently, "Happy Hearts and Hooves day."
