So I've been silently reading this story for a few weeks now, and I've been enjoying it.
But... Daaaaamn... I was not expecting that. I wasn't expecting any of this.
I've read a whole bunch of stories, but I'm pretty sure none of them killed their main character a third of the way in the story...

Hehe, glad I was able to surprise you :P I hope the rest of it keeps you entertained as well!

You really aren't afraid of being untraditional in your story telling? A vast majority of people shy away from true evil anti-heros and making the characters truly do any unmoral actions. They always rely on the implied connotations of raiders. Slavers, and tribals without writing anything they would truly do. But not you, you just dive right in. Then this chapter, is just wow.
I read a lot. My library on this website should be evidence of that alone. Out of the 549 books or so in that library: only four of them have drove me to attempt to read them in every waking moment. This will now be the fifth.

So, for this story specifically, I wanted to explore the concept of 'redemption' in a way that I rarely encountered before. As in: is it possible for someone who committed truly evil acts to make up for those acts in a meaningful way? To that end, I knew that I couldn't really hold back much with Jackboot. Obviously, I couldn't make him a complete monster, but it needed to be spelled out that he was/is a raider at heart. Only towards the end of his life did he begin to care about others. I also wanted it left to the reader to decide if his sacrifice mattered. If the fact that he'd managed to raise a 'daughter' whose desire was to be a hero would in any way help to balance out his own 'legacy' of suffering and death that he'd personally left in his wake.
It was an idea that tickled me a bit.
As someone who has also found themselves unable to stop reading 'just one more chapter' with stories I've found profoundly captivating, I don't know that I've ever received a more profound compliment on my writing; and I thank you immensely for that. I hope that you continue to enjoy following Windfall's journey as much as you did Jackboot's!
And thank you also for catching those errors :P
