Holy fuck. I thought I was prepared for this chapter but I was wrong. I had suspected a few things that went down in this chapter, but there was a lot more I didn't. So goddamn good, and chock full of action/adventure/intrigue/shipping your taste buds won't know what hit them!
So let's get that next chapter out as soon as you can!
Why do evil people always try to stop a prophecy? Especially when it becomes very clear that it's impossible.
If a prophecy says X is a hero, so they send a few people to kill X and somehow, by some unfathom luck X survives? Guess what? You send EVERYTHING to kill the fucker and everything about him. You drop nukes on every city where people even say X's name.
There is no such thing as overkill, so why do people never take prophecy seriously, especially when they throw a rocket at the thing and it walks away unscratched? Why are people always sooooo stupid?! Why can't we ever get a story, where the bad guys aren't idiotic morons?
This was a pretty exciting chapter. Lots of backstory and classic Fallout "digging through stuff". I like how Scotch dealt with the broken talisman.
The Dealer is kind of a hard one to put down where his goals in this are put down.
Now Doctor Z on the other hand... I'm actually a little surprised. I'm assuming he's an A.I. built by the zebras during the war. Seems kind of strange that they would build an A.I, that was so invasive of their own secrets. Then again, considering some of the things revealed by the Project horizon story, Maybe it shouldn't be surprising that some might have started to suspect their government and other elements attached to it might have been doing shifty stuff.
7360403 Overreacting to a prophecy is even *more* likely to make it come true, though. You need to subvert it. If the hero is destined to overthrow the evil empire, then you have to make sure that you profit from the empire being overthrown.
7361784 That's what Amadi tried to do to Blackjack. Make the Maiden of the Stars someone who couldn't suceed but pairing up Cognitum and Luna's soul. Of course, Blackjack and Luna's soul proved much more compatible to fulfilling the prophesy.
Also, Pythia's going to give that very warning. A prophesy is like the ending of a book being spoiled. You might know what happens, but you don't know precisely how the story will get there. The big, important thing is that prophesies aren't 100% true or reliable, but highly probable. You also need to determine if they're true or just wishful thinking imposed by confirmation bias, which ruins more prophesy than anything else.
As you might guess, prophesy is a big deal for zebras.
Yes, you shoot them with small caliber bullets to build up an immunity against larger ones.
7361784 7361881
That was kinda my point. Not just profit on the empire being overturn, but instead not even have an empire in the first place, or do the job right when you get to killing the 'hero'.
Take blackjack from the last story for example. Got stuck into a Blank's body that is a copy of the original. Then the big bad guy just leaves, telling her underlings to kill her. She should have taken Blackjack's sword herself and cut off her head herself. Quick, easy, with no mess. Not tell your underlings to do it, who decide to wait and argue until the Hero breaks out on their own.
There is a reason there is the saying "If you want something done right, do it yourself".
Just sick and tired of seeing enemies do the same thing over and over again, always failing by the exact same reasoning. Would like something different once in a while.
Also, Somber, when is Scotch Tape and the Griffin Kid going to bang? Probably soon as Scotch now has some deep emotional scars she needs to hide away from with sex. Just like Blackjack does.
7362236 Scotch Tape doesn't have that same coping mechanism. She tried with Bastard, but all that did was leave her really sore and a little humiliated.
7361881
I'd also add that the more seriously people take prophesies, the greater incentive there is to generate false prophesy to influence others' actions. The more prophesy is believed, the more you could expect false prophesy to seep into the system.
Hmm, very interesting chapter well done Somber, well done man! Hahaha, ahhh man what a story this is turning out to be.
Twists and turns, blood and guts and adorable wee Scotch Tape on her own little adventure... I loves it~
So nice job man, keep it up!
RIPTIDE~
Something I find interesting is the plant manager doesn't want to know about the devices true origin.
Would it really be that bad? The only two reasons I can imagine she would be concerned about it would either be keeping the zebra nation separate from Equestria's influence for some reason or they're eventually planning on continuing the war with Equestria. Of course, that also makes me wonder about how Riptide fits into all this? She certainly is driven.
Always a interesting read Somber.
A lovely chapter to read.
Scotch apearing to getting a little better understanding of spirits, but her being the one to have welcomed them in for the celebration probably helped.
Precious idea of "killing the cracks" was hilarious.
Members that are working together to create a New Empire, where we atleast know that two maybe three notable characters are part of. And that we can expect to know more of them as the tale unfolds.
The Riptide pulling into shore again.
Zebra prophecy that I have learned to be weary off.
And backstabing in Carnico.
Commentary!
He expresses this with the usual zebra-ish utter certainty, but is it necessarily a bad thing? I mean, we don't see pony buildings falling down because the spirits were offended by it. The mathematics of structural engineering work. It's a different way of doing things, but ponies sure don't have to reroute roads because some spirit said "get off my lawn". For all that this allegedly angers spirits, they sure don't seem to object very strenuously.
I wonder... the Eater of Souls was all about inflicting its will on the cosmos. Could the shift in pony thinking be due to its influence? Or perhaps its presence made Equestrian spirits grow recalcitrant and forced ponies to adopt other ways?
Wait, I though that was the influence of the Eater of Souls. Is it just me, or could any given misfortune be ascribed to censure? This smells a lot like the old "We're having a drought because the gods are unhappy" way of thinking. I immediately wonder, "How could you know that? What would indicate that a given misfortune was not due to spiritual censure?"
Shine on, you crazy diamond.
You're welcome.
Some days, I worry for the state of her toolbox. I sure hope she doesn't end up missing that particular size of wrench in the near future...
Bwahahaha...
...oh please tell me this is actually him, as in he's an AI or a worm or something...
Listen, 'Big Deal', you got another problem. Women always figure out the truth. Always.
A poison designed to target only zebras, perhaps? Or something more... insidious?
Oh no, we're doing something that has Wasteland worried? Whatever shall we do?
I get the feeling that this is a great window into Wasteland's drives. It doesn't necessarily want to kill everyone; it wants to perpetuate the status quo. For every tribe that rises, one must fall. For every device repaired, another breaks. It's not looking for stasis, but for unchanging change -- like the tides, eternally going up and down, but never rising or falling beyond its limits. I wonder if this is why it seemed to help Blackjack sometimes; she was stirring things up, breaking existing power structures and sowing chaos that could birth new powers... right up until she started changing things for the better and, perhaps, building something that could last.
GEE I WONDER WHO COULD BE BEHIND THIS
Shit.
...huh. That's not something just any old shaman can do, is it? I wonder whether this is an oblique function of being some kind of "shaman of repair", or if she's turning out to be something that's not quite a shaman in the traditional sense. She hasn't taken on any specific taboos yet, after all. (At least, not consciously...)
I have to wonder whether a shaman's specialization is something they're born with or trained into, and whether it's a limitation against things outside their bailiwick or simply a specialization in a particular area. Boggy may be a bad example, since his presence seems to actively upset most spirits -- the shamans from Abalone seemed to imply that it's a limitation, but I wonder if that was just a matter of never having been trained to "speak earth spirit", so to speak. Or perhaps the tighter you bond with a particular class of spirits, the less the others listen to you...
Did you just pun on 'international terrorist'?
Yeah, THAT one took about five seconds to look suspicious as hell.
Kid. You're in the communications room. I'm quite positive you can contact every receiver in the tri-state area from there.
I knew it! He's not a hacker, he's a program!
Well, okay, a distributed fleet of programs. I hesitate to call him an AI virus, but... yeah.
Hm. Implying (unsurprisingly) that he's a copy of somezebra who was once in IT.
Unless it was disguised as something else that she'd be expected to carry...
Huh. So it's one particular dish, I guess. Whatever comes before pie.
Won't think that for long once she starts crying and puking...
Heh. Called it.
Any chance we can blow the brige and drop it right on that ship?
I like this story a lot.
Somber, I like your how you write so I read PH and enjoyed it even if I didn't always liked the event a lot.
But I think that in Homeland you are doing better than with PH. You aren't showing the story of an heroic mare in the Equestrian Wastelands like a lot of other Fo:E stories but you are showing a character discovering the zebra lands and the zebra culture. We see with Scotsh Tape a new exotic country and I think that you are doing a very good job in Imagineering this universe.
I just wanted to say how much I like your story after seeing a very severe critic of it on Reddit and that I think your story is pleasant to read and a very original Fo:E story.
I hope that my comment isn't too confuse, I'm not very good at English.
That was an awesome chapter I can't wait to read more.
Haven't started homelands yet.
Skipped all the comments just to post this.
Be annoyed with me if you must.
But...
I just finished project horizons...
I finish an emotional roller coaster only to head for the exit and find no gift shop, but the entrance to the next ride?
Fuck me...
I need a break.
There. I just ticked read later. If you need me I'm going to be reading some mindless fluff and trying to find my wallet to throw money at an author who insists on writing epic stories.
Somber, keep up the good work you fucking emotional tormenter you.
Edit: 3:30 in the morning is a normal time to curse at authors you like, right?
Earth Pony shaman. Called it.
Also, you are missing something we desperately need...
SPECIAL, skills, and perks. GIMME THE STATS AND PROGRESS OF OUR NEW HERO!
daaaww, scotch grew up abit
Okay, I feel a bit stupid.
I liked to read PH at the time, and even if the second part of it is way over the top and this story have a lot of criticism I can relay to sometimes. I really enjoyed it.
So I feel stupid not knowing there were a sequel. XD
Seriously, I just learn of this sequel yesterday. XD
Well, as it seems it's a filly crew, let jump on it.
7463220 It's fine. I hope more people read it and enjoy it and support my writing.
7448695 Take a break if you need to. The story isn't disappearing any time soon. And thanks for the support. I really, really need it right now. Unexpected expenses are really hitting me right now.
7464819 Lacunae
7452434 THIS MAN GETS IT
i want to read this but it lacks blackjack srry im not partial to how PH ended

You've got it a bit backwards: I believe Lacunae always had Psalm's memories, except for a few which she ended up dumping into Blackjack, but she also had memories from thousands of other ponies in Unity, including disproportionate bad/weak memories from Twilight and especially Trixie. Lacunae died when she returned the memories of the thousands of other alicorns to their respective original holders; the composite no longer exists, even though Psalm does have the memories of Lacunae's time in the Wasteland.
Have you ever had one of those moments where you realize the end of the movie before it happens? I'm having one of those moments.
I really liked this chapter! I especially loved the little Animator VS Animation reference there :P
Minor continuity issue: Cecilio introduced Colonel Adolpha in the previous chapter, but now he's acting as if he'd never seen her before.
7452434 Nah, this sequel is probably statted out in another system, not SPECIAL. Like ... Rifts, or something.
I ... what? What?
It's a pity he couldn't have met Blackjack.
I dunno, he seems preety AffablyEvil for the wasteland.
I'm left wondering how you'd do a glyph password for '123456.'
And you didn't pick up any of it? Heck, even BJ figured out how to pick locks.
She's no one to be trifled with.
No. Not now, not then, not ever.
And she is a 99 pony.
Ah, the Evil Empire. Darn! Here I was hoping for a Black Council.
I don't know who this is, but I look forward to his hopeful HeelFaceTurn.
Great chapter! I like Doctor Z. I feel like he's a reference to something, but I dunno what.

You just... don't get it. You don't!
I am loving this story
Im imaginingP-21 glaring at a lock that won't budge, and then it cower and just unlocks just like that.
Like, "how dare you stay locked." And it's all like "oh no bro, it's the double P!"
Talk about bad to worse

Look for Red Stapler trope.
Maybe there was five year supply of red staplers for whole office.
I knew that was a meet-cute....
To sum up this chapter: A big company, who controls a city ,is facing a huge problem and has hired the group to perform a job. This job involves a secret the company doesn’t want the public to know. After the job is completed, person who hired them has betrayed the team and plans to kill them. This is because she is working with an outside force and take over the company for herself. Sounds like your typical Shadowrun plot.
The start of this chapter was depressing. The heroes have to work for Carnico who has allied itself with the Iron Legion - a bunch of murderers, cannibals and rapist against - the Blood Legion which is supposedly an even worse bunch of murderers, cannibals and rapist.
Ok, we later learn that Mariana had other reason for trying to kill them, but Xarius implies that even without that reason, she may have killed them to keep this secret. Which makes her look really, really stupid. That talisman is the only thing that keeps you company alive. Without it, there’s no more Carnico. What happens if it breaks down again?
You don’t murder the only person, whom you know that can fix it. You pay her a lot of money and offer her a nice position at your company. Preferably even have her teach a selected few how to fix that talisman.
Now there’s only one important question: How much XP did she receive for all the cracks?
And the Dealer is back. Not making any bets this time, but still bothering fillies that follow(ed) Blackjack around. Based on his behavior in Speaks, he’s probably a good guy who wants to help Scotch is his own weird ways.
So I think this is his way of offering her a well-meaning advice: The smart thing to do, would be to turn around and get the hell out of town. Find a nice place to settle down and live an uneventful life.
Don’t be like Blackjack, don’t try to be a hero! Because being hero is hard. You will make mistakes. You will lose friends. You will get hurt and suffer.
Carnico is secretly behind the razor grass and use it to make a huge profit. And Doctor Z is probably an A.I. obsessed with free information. Yep, we’ve reached the point where this is a Shadowrun story in anything but name.
You feel for the oldest trick in the book.
And now she has killed someone. It was going to happen sooner or later eventually. I feel bad for Scotch. She knows what happened to Blackjack and doesn’t want end up like her. Yet when she opened that door and decided to do the right think, she took the first step down the same path.
Okay this doesn't make sense. In the previous chapter when Cecilio confronted the fat Shaman lady and The Blood Legion he introduced the Colonel Adolpha like he knew exactly who and what she was.
I really like the idea of whatwver Doctor Z is supposed to be.
Scotch Tape is starting to feel like a recoulored OC of Blackjack
A knowledgeable hacker, I see
