So I've been playing Fallout 4, and I've been finding a few similarities between it and what I have planned. It's partially amusing, but also a little concerning at times. There's certainly a lot I hadn't planned. When I started planning out this story, the only thing I knew about Fallout 4 that the two shared in common was that the main character lived before the "end of the world".
I mainly mention it because of a couple things mentioned in this chapter that made me take note of those similarities. One are the pipe guns, which I'd actually brought in from a post-apocalyptic roleplaying campaign I had worked up, as it made sense to have some cheapo weapons made post-war. The other is the PipBuck with a latch instead of a lock. There's an in-universe reason why that kind of PipBuck exists, even if it isn't mentioned yet. So they do have more reason to exist than just "Fallout 4 did it", even if I can't say exactly what they are (I don't plan on giving spoilers, even if they are minor ones). I just thought I'd make mention of it, because it's been a mix of being amused by the similarities and pleased with the differences.
Raider camp: Check.
Raiders: Not check.
I smell a ruin-dwelling monster infestation of some kind.
The relative lack of comments on this fic depresses me. Well, I love this story, at least.
"Just a scouting mission." Y'know, when the chapter ends right there, you just know that things will go terribly wrong.
I'm curious about Emerald's reference to the Elements of Harmony. I was under the impression that only Spike and the ponies who knew about the Gardens of Equestria knew about them. Though I might be misremembering.

I'm a bit disappointed too, but not really surprised. Fallout: Equestria side-stories tend to not get as many views as other stories, since they're essentially a subset of a subset of fiction. I knew this story would get less attention than my other stories, though I wish it wasn't quite so much less. Still, outside of the few big-name Fallout: Equestria stories, there are some really good stories that just don't get the attention they deserve.
I do miss the amount of feedback I got on my other stories, though. But in the end, I'm mostly writing it just because I really like the idea that my brain cooked up. While the lack of feedback and commentary is a bit of a disappointment, I'm having a lot of fun writing this one.
Pfft, nah. Now you're just being paranoid. Nothing could go wrong...
I actually double-checked when writing that scene. There were a few characters who refer to them. Calamity, for example, snarks about himself being the "Element of Generosity" when bartering with a merchant.
I get the impression ponies know of them, but they're more of a history kind of thing. Not exactly a fable, but the kind of old-world thing that's no longer around or that doesn't really apply to the world as it is now. It's hard to see the value of Generosity (Well, from yourself) when you're not sure where your next meal will come from, for example.

You know you could just made pipboy 2000, and pipe rifles/pistols

Are nothing new, but I have felling you never played fallout 1 and 2 and only went through fanfic or 3/4/nv
Huh. The pegasi split off during the war, though, as far as I remember. Probably some time before the megaspells. I imagine that would've been all over the news in Equestria
Yeah... reasons like the fact Littlepip just blew all their comfort out of the sky
Give it time
Well, that took considerably less time than I thought
Yeah, that didn't take long. Of course, it's a matter of perspective, seeing as most of the Enclave citizens were never even told the wasteland was inhabitable...
They just lost an airship. Seeing as this area is still covered, I'm kinda betting on in-fighting over the last remaining pieces of cloud cover
Yaaay...
I was thinking that too!
Alright. Fair point
Wowza
Hee, nice
He's totally thinking "Huh. Trouble in paradise?"
An excellent point
Careful. Those fuckers are known to leave traps.
Wheee! Action!
Remarks and corrections:
> Emerald runs the store and inn, you'll meet her if you're looking for supplies.
Comma splice. That should be a semicolon, not a comma.

While it's mostly somewhat vague, the closest I could find to a definitive time for when the pegasi split from Equestria was from Calamity, while they were investigating Ditzy's old wagon below what used to be Cloudsdayle:
Assuming what he says is accurate (And it appears to be the only place where the timing of the separation is clearly stated), the pegasi didn't part ways until shortly after the first megaspell went off, which would have been after Whisper was out of communication.
There was an earlier bit that showed the growing resentment of some pegasi toward the war and talk about splitting from Equestria, but it was just talk. There were several recordings around the last day that appear to refer to Cloudsdayle as still being part of Equestria.
It's like that adorable stray that you can't help immediately liking!
Yes. Yes he is.
Really good chapter. Something tells me that they're going to have an encounter with some kind of creature (hellhound?)

I've played all of the main Fallouts (1, 2, 3, NV, and 4), it's just that most of my time playing 1&2 was around their release. I've only played each of them once in the last 15 years or so, so I didn't remember that 2 had a pipe rifle. It's easy to forget, though, since it's both rare and basically useless.
And I bounced so hard off of Tactics that I don't remember much about it. I didn't get very far at all before giving up on it.
Not sure what you mean by the PipBoy 2000, though. It doesn't resemble the worn PipBoys (It appears to be more like a PDA or tablet), and it doesn't really match with either Starlight's regular PipBuck or Emerald's latch-equipped PipBuck.
6732360
Yeah, pipe rifle and zipguns were redding bottlegagers domain (sadly) or when you go first time to klamath, your probably first gun ingame is pipe rifle.
What I mean that pipboy 2000 in term of usefulness (to story) was way better than 3000 but everybody completly ignore them, yeah better have clunky thing what you can't take off :D
+ for me its way less climatic (where is that 50s futuristic design?)
6731841
Hmm, point. Though ch32 has a memory orb that shows that some pegasi were already making a fuss about wanting to split off before.
Not sure where exactly to place it in the timeline though. It's before anyone knew about Applesnack, and before the assassination attempt on AJ by her board. So, I think that means it predated the steel ranger armour and all megaspell research too then.

Yeah, that's the scene I was talking about with the "growing resentment". I got the impression it never rose past discontent (Maybe protests and such? Or whatever that was with the grenade in the same scene) until the megaspells kicked things off. Kind of like how some people here in the US talk (Often very loudly) about wanting their state to secede from the union, and the occasional lone nutcase does something extreme, but the general population would be very surprised if it actually happened.
Hi PD
Just wanted to get in a foreword before I started reading, thanks for the reply to my comment on the blog post for the end of A New Way. I'm afraid that I got kinda stuck in studies. I did manage to start and have just finished reading Fallout: Equestria, by Kkat. I now find myself looking forward to this story more than ever, I want to see how you deal with Changelings in the Wasteland where they do not appear in the base story, which was written before Changelings were in the show. I just wanted to get that out before I started reading.
Here we go.
Honora Imperator
Woooo! An update to an awesome story! Love it and want more!

I think most of it is that FO:E stories are inevitably Mature and don't show up on most users' radars at all. I know I had to click the porn filter off just to see this story when I was specifically looking for it in your story list so I could flag it to notify me for updates.
Hmm, maybe they activated the defense system by mistake?

That guy is definitely military, using a word so niche as "defilade."
I'm definitely of the opinion that life up there hasn't been so easy for them either, even if it has been, relatively speaking. Maybe that's the other big FoE spin-offs talking, though.
Speaking of which, you need to spread this story around, get the word out!
This is a large-scale FoE story that is solid mechanically, dialogue-wise, and story-wise. That isn't exactly common. Capitalize on that!

Yeah. It's a military dictatorship that tries to proclaim itself a democracy, with strict controls of information, travel, and reproduction, harsh punishments for anyone who doesn't toe (Hoof?) the party line, a huge military, and very limited resources. They might have it better than most places in the Equestrian Wasteland, but I don't imagine it's all super-awesome up there.
Especially not at the moment...
Ah yes, the Recharger Pistol. Very useful when I was playing an energy-weapons focused character in a section of the game with incredibly rare power cell ammo. (Honest Hearts DLC in New Vegas.) If I recall the damage is a bit pathetic compared to your standard laser weapon though. Good for this team, it'll save them caps and they shouldn't need high-damage this early in their adventure. ...Watch there be hellhounds in the building now that I've said that. Nothing they have will make one flinch.
Tension rises.:3
Very interesting story, onwards I go reading it!
I very much enjoying this. it has been a good while since I read a good Fallout Equestria story. I am very suspicious about Gemstone town. Maybe I've read to many FOE stories.
Yeah, ammo is like bubblegum; if you don't have enough for everyone, you're in trouble!
There would be conversation involved?
Disrespectful huligan. This is why I love her, she's sweet with just a hint of black licorusse. She can quickly turn sour if you push her wrong.
That, and she is rebellious and free in spirit. Although that bored look would speak of ignorance or naievity. You should never be "bored" going into a dangerous place.
Guard up, senses sharp.
8365648
Well you might, go bored that is....if you're a sociopath.
Tsk tsk tsk, Dusty sure needs to listen more closely to the NPCs if he want to earn some money in the wasteland! Rust dosn't buy electronics but Gemstone sure does, heck their whole economy is based on high end weapons, so they would be able to offload stuff that no one else wants. Its a good thing that he have a scrapper on his team that actually listens to people.
Ohhh silly colt, kill the golden sheep and you can only harvest its wool once, feed it, take care of it, pet it and make it comfortable and fat, and it will be walking to you on its own year after year when it is time to fleece it!
I know that they complained about the Enclave loot, but a weird army outpost where someone unknown have killed raiders, them not knowing what there is /if there is anything inside... I would still say that an armful of Enclave loot is better than very dubious loot... Then again there are properly more ears to harvest here so that is a good thing, if Whisper have the stomach and tools to harvest them that is.
Wow, Gemstone is genuinely the nicest place I've seen in the wasteland in all the FoE stories I've read
Very pleasantly surprised to see
Just thought I should step out of dark and say that I'm very much enjoingthe story! I wanted to read something about changelings in the world of FoE for a while now and I'm very much liking Whisper and Starlight. Can't wait for more changeling stuff to come up lol.
11434586
Glad to hear it! And oh, there's so much I want to say about "changeling stuff," but I won't spoil it for you!
