A troubling modern trend is complex issues being boiled down to pithy quotes. Nuance matters. Context matters. Problems that have a simple and easy fixes don't stay problems.

Nevertheless, sometimes the pithy quote is on point. This is one such time.

    Signal boost

I doubt I can add much boost, but Horizon's blog post on sexual assault bears maximum repetition. For the good of the fandom, or at the very least in the name of being a decent person, check it out if you haven't already.

    State of the Author

I continue to not be dead. :yay:
    Still job hunting, though. :fluttershysad:

Words continue to happen, occasionally in the writeoffs, but mostly on the novel I've mentioned. I'm now about halfway through the first draft, and it's full steam ahead.

See you all on the other side (or if I get a really cool pony fic out of the writeoffs).

    Interview!

Hey folks, still not dead. I actually just finished an interview with SirNotAppearingInThisFic, which you can find here. Some great questions, and hopefully my answers are equally interesting. So go hit it up if you want to see me talk about writing, rockets, and stuff I've been working on.

    Enjoy!

Of episodes, writing and adaptation · 4:20am Dec 9th, 2012

So I just saw the latest episode. I must say, they did a good job, and I loved the interaction and character building of all the ponies. It's especially cool to get a bit more Luna, and to see RD supporting Scootaloo. It does still beg the question, what exactly is up with Scootaloo's folks, though.

There was a lot of cool world-building, and many elements that fit nicely with things I've got planned. Of course that ignores the elephant in the room for me as a writer - the rainbow falls at the end of the episode.

So now I need to put my thinking cap on and figure out how the depiction of rainbows in the latest episode fits with what I've written, what my options are, and how far I want to go in addressing it.

On a related note, I'm putting the finishing touches on the chapter 2 draft, and it will be ready for pre-reading and final editing shortly. Fortunately, the rest of the story doesn't really rely much on the behavior of rainbows, so it's really just a matter of what I want to do with the first chapter.

I liked the episode too. And can't wait for chapter 2!

Considering the color can be vacuumed right off a rainbow leaving it greyscale, it can be used in fountains (Dash's house) or falls, and it's manufactured... I don't think the show knows what the hell they are either, so make it up as you go.

I don't think it would be too far out of canon to assume there are different kinds of rainbows, just as the show and fanon have decided on different kinds of clouds.

Yeah, leaving the chapter as-is and trying to work in a later explanation of the various types/uses of rainbows is an approach I'm considering.

My concern there is that a later explanation won't help with the confusion that new readers will have from reading that section and comparing it to the episode.

Judging by the comments, many readers have had a bit of dissonance with that already, and that was without having an episode directly showing rainbows pouring into a pool of water.

I guess I'll wait while chapter 2 is finishing up and see if the dislikes start ticking in at a higher rate.
