In Which I Try to Convince You to Watch an Upcoming Horror-Comedy Movie · 1:26pm Dec 7th, 2012
If you've never heard of it before, here's the story: the fate of the world might just rest on the shoulders of two slackers who have been exposed to an interdimensional drug called Soy Sauce. The film is called John Dies at the End, and it's based on the novel of the same name, which started out as a story someone posted online as a web serial. It's weird. It's fun. It's really, really cool. And if enough people see it, there's a chance that its sequel might get made into a film as well.
What does this have to do with ponies? Well...admittedly little. (But if you liked the episodes with Discord or the changelings, or if you are a fan of video games and comic books, or if you ever suspect that there is an Awful Secret behind the universe, then you'll probably like this a lot.)
Available on video on demand December 27. In theaters January 25.
This trailer is rated TEEN for freaky images.
Watched the trailer once. I still can't figure out, or make any sense of the images that just flashed through my mind.
594640 It's a very weird book, so the movie will probably end up more of a cult classic than anything else. It's about two friends who get exposed to a drug from another universe that gives them psychic powers and makes them aware of interdimensional beings that are trying to take over our reality. I don't know if any of the video game and geek references that are in the novel will make it into the movie, but when I finished the book (which someone on the Gameinformer forum recommended, that's how I found out about it), I was smiling for an hour and trying to convince my brother that he should read it (which he still hasn't). It's the most fun I had reading last year.
So I've been sharing this all over Facebook (and now here) in the hope that some people will watch it when it comes out so that the sequel will be made into a movie too.
Wanted to let you know that the movie was mentioned in the latest Game Informer magazine. The editors might be fans of it already. Bug them enough, and they may give it publicity.
Also, love the new avatar.
655608 Thanks! I really loved this picture, so I asked the artist on deviantart if I could use it.
I just got to see the movie. It's "on demand" right now on itunes and Amazon, before it reaches theaters in next month. And the verdict is...it was pretty fun, but they cut out over half the book, including some really important plot and character points! (Which meant that the movie was actually really well paced for the most part, and what they included some of the philosophical musings that I was sure would be cut.) I guess the book is always better...
Actually the author of the book is a big time gamer himself, and you can definitely see that in the story (book, not film).
[And in other news, my computer died on me on Christmas eve, which was awful. Now I know how the main character of Neuromancer felt when he was cast out of Cyberspace. I did get it repaired (I'll miss you, $50...), but it made me realize how addicted to the Internet I am. Sheesh. Two days without going online, and I feel like a caveman. I might need help...)
Anyway, I hope your Christmas was a happy one.
Looks worthwhile. Reminds me that I still haven't seen "They Live".
680979 They Live is a classic! Watch it with friends, it's better that way. (And while John Dies at the End is a really fun movie, the book is just amazing. It's like urban fantasy science fiction horror comedy on a sugar high with some really profound philosophical stuff thrown in. Also, it owes a lot to H.P. Lovecraft, so if you're a fan of his work you might appreciate this on a different level. (Like a smart Lovecraftian slacker comedy adventure for the Internet and video game generation.)
