Cloudy Skies

Cloudy writes stories. Cloudy likes it when ponies like each other maybe a little too much and sometimes end up in love. Cloudy writes stories about these things, often.

Longpost: What's Next? Also, To Perytonia Resources, Art, Thoughts

To Perytonia ate a year and change of my life. Dramatic? Yes, dears, I am dramatic, and thank you for finally realising. I’d even add “and I wouldn’t have it any other way” because that's certainly true. However, instead of revelling in its completion and trying to drive hype, I've partially disappeared, so clearly it's complicated.

    To Perytonia Completed

The longest story I've written to date, To Perytonia, is complete.

If you've been waiting for it to finish, and if you're in the mood for a grand, dramatic adventure to foreign shores, I invite you to give it a read. Bring plenty of food and drink, pack a blanket, and ask a friend or two to come with you. It's a doozy.

    Today and the Future

This post features no spoilers of any kind.

Everyone’s talking about S8 and movies and who knows what else. Goodness, I’ve not even watched S7 yet!

And you know what, dear reader? I don’t think I ever will.

This is not a protest against anything, I’m just observing a fact. At this moment I do not know that I will ever engage with the newer content.

    Pony Fan Fiction and Positivity

Alternate titles: “The post wherein Cloudy justifies their tastes”, “let’s talk about positivity”, or “I’m not just gonna bash on sadfic, I promise!”

(There are some words about To Perytonia at the end, hence the tag.)

    RariJack? RariJack.

Shortfic is an art. An art I've never mastered.

I understand that my latest story, To Perytonia, may be daunting to some/many/most because of its sheer length. Some are waiting for it to finish, some are simply put off by the prospect of a fic that, if printed, could be used as a coffee table.

It's November! · 10:07pm Nov 18th, 2012

Guess what happens in November?

Absolutely nothing! It's a sharp drawing of breath, a loud silence before we throw ourselves into the madness of christmas Hearth's Warming Eve. All the same, I don't like silence, so I'm just gonna plop down this short little update while I'm trying to produce something worth reading.

I couldn't tell you what I'm releasing next even if I wanted to. Or, well, I do want to, but fact of the matter is, my writing's crazy-sporadic these days. In trying not to stress myself, I discovered that the result isn't a mad boost to productivity as I had hoped, but writing less actually means I'm writing less.

I'm sure it's only temporary. I'm good at taking breaks, but the desire to write is still as constant as ever.

I've still got the same set of fics that I'm fiddling with; Where Earth Meets Sky 3 is one of those (arguably WEMS 2, 2.5, or 4 depending on how you count the fics in that continuity). It's "coming along", which is to say my attention flits between that and a second fic, the barely-mentioned RariLuna. I'm actually writing on that right now, and I'm very excited to try something different. Well, different for me; I don't much feel like trying an entirely new genre or anything.

I'm trying to limit myself to these two fics for now. It's that, or get started on a FlutterDash I really want to write, a RariLight that needs a little work but could be downright marvellous, and a RariShy that's simple-and-sweet.

I could of course go on and detail a million more fics that I want to write, but these are the most immediate. I hope to release something more before the holidays, but I know better than to make promises.

In other news, I heard rumors that this pony show started a new season. There's allegedly been three episodes so far. Anypony know anything about that?

No, seriously, I'm bloody impressed. Amazing season opener, and episode 3 proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the good guys at the studio haven't lost their touch at all. If this is indicative of the direction the series is going - that is to say, a bee-line straight ahead, more of the same amazing stuff - I'm a very, very happy pony!

515853 Aw, but that ruins the entire point of my post! Can I persuade you to reschedule?

I agree. There where some issues with "The Crystal Empire", but "Too Many Pinkie Pies" fixed that. I can't whait for the Scootaloo episode.

Rariluna hmm havent read one of those at all. however being a part of a major storyline i would have to read all of that before i became invested, i font like to be missing context.
Wait, Now what is this about Other Earth and skys? i read the one, and i just checked your story list and didnt see something marked as the next entry in a series. Am i missing out on some Cloudyskies?
I always set the season openings apart from the rest of the season, mostly because they are always 2 part-ers and tend to be slightly higher on the adventure scale rather. While i think it will be very hard for anything to compare to Discord i still think Sombra was rather undefined and even silly. Got my Pinkie Fix for now but i flat refuse to spoil anything the upcoming episodes in any way so i dont look at the titles. Still what we have so far is quite good, though i wonder if we will see Tank again or find out who enchanted his gyro-proppeller. But i digress before i ramble on to much.
Great to hear your writing and creating even if it's at a reduced rate, after all solid work takes solid time, and i will be waiting to see when the next fic hits the Hot list.

Ship Rarity with ALL the ponies! :raritystarry:

Seriously though, I look forward to seeing those stories you're talking about.

JAG

I thought Too Many Pinkie Pies wasted some potential and was a step down from Crystal Empire. Both were good, though.

And this Rarity kick of yours is kind of funny. She's somehow gone from being the character you write the least, to being shipped with everything. Not a bad thing, of course. The world can always use more Rarishipping.

RariLuna? I have never seen one of those before... but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound like it could turn out really good.

Nothing happens in November?! But- but-.... my plans! Now I have to reschedule them all out of november! Im going to be stuck in an ampty house for a month!:fluttercry:

515870 I really enjoyed both, but I guess people're bound to like one more than the other, usually, since they're so different!

515990 "Where Your Heart Is" is basically the follow-up to Where Earth Meets Sky; it's PinkieDash instead of AppleShy, but it's set in the same continuity and presumes WEMS happened. Also, I experimented with something more mature, called Bonds of Earth And Sky, and I don't personally consider that canon to the WEMS setting, but some might. "WEMS3" (tentatively called "Where They Are Joined" as I work on it) is more AppleShy, dealing with a relationship already in progress!

I fully agree with the season openers. That's why I waited until ep3 to really say anything out loud about the season. I'm also in the no-spoiler zone, for the record.

Sombra wasn't a very good villain, but it didn't detract from the episodes for me because it wasn't about him; the eps put the focus on the mane6 instead, and did a wonderful job of it. That's just my opinion though!

516010 I may have a crush on Rarity these days. Just maybe.

Damnit Rarity. She's a try-hard glamour pony, she's not supposed to win my heart like that.

516033 Trying to bring balance to the world! I still think I need to do ApplePie for that very same reason.

516037 I don't write it just for the crack factor, but I haven't seen it done myself, either. Mostly, I just like combining Luna's stiffly regal nature with Rarity's... everything. It's going to be a little more emotional than most my fics. Not sad or dark, but heavier, I hope!

All those Rarity ships :raritystarry: I'm more than okay with this (though a very selfish side of me is disappointed to not see RariDash amongst them). Especially interested in RariLuna; I've never seen that pairing done before.

516064
Yeah the whole test thing actually struck me as almost a Jedi test sort of thing, put them on the line and see if they fall from the code, biggest difference being Jedi is against love but still. If only i had context for how powerful sombra is supposed to be, and ruling the crystal empire dosent put much to him seeing as ALL crystal empire ponies are Earth Ponies i dont think that makes much of a statement on how powerful he is, same problem with celestia and shining armor they get taken out and i never see them take out anything so i have no idea how scary the enemy is supposed to be. Right now Fluttershy is more intimidating than Celestia, shining, and Sombra combined because she can flip a bear. :rainbowlaugh:

And i understand the Rarity thing, she grows on you, despite all of the preconceived notions we can have about a Prissy person they still poses strength of character even if they break down on things as silly as being a little unclean, and i have come to adore her outbursts and expressions even though she was my least fav. character when i first started watching she went up a few notches and forced my already difficult top characters of the main 6 list into a three way tie for 4th. (That is one damn hard list to come up with and even harder to maintain.)

Ok then so i havent actually missed out on something. Torn on that actually glad i missed nothing sad i dont have something i missed to read, rather silly i think. :twilightblush:
And sorry if i am rambling or taking up time. :twilightblush:

Guess what happens in November?

Cyber Monday and the newest Dresden Files, Cold Days, are both happening.

It's November!

*Is doing NaNoWriMo*

Guess what happens in November?

Ooh! Ooh! I know! I'm--

Absolutely nothing!

:twilightoops:
But...I...

It's a sharp drawing of breath...

:twilightangry2:

Considering WEMS... and WYHI as a follow up...

AND the fact that you have a Rarilight in mind... hmmmm :twilightsheepish:

RariLUna? Eeeenteresting! Those are two wonderfully complex characters that too often get shortchanged and slotted into predefined roles. I'd love to see what you come up with for them.

I agree the new season is great, and I take that as some consolation for Hasbro deciding that they can cut the seasons to 13 eps, since they figure everyone will just buy stuff anyway... but I really like the change to a story arc format.

Yes, we could certainly use some RariLuna. They can bond over being unappreciated artists!

516083 As I always say when ship X and Y comes up, I truly hope to write all ships eventually, and RariDash certainly is among them! I hope that the RariLuna is worth reading when I get around to releasing it; I may've written a lot of ship, but Rarity is still kind of new ground for me.

516099 That's basically my take on it; the villain is the backdrop, Twilight's the focus. the S2 opener split between the characters and characterized a good villain in the progress, but S3's opener traded that for some worldbuilding, and I'm very happy with it. Not "I prefer this", just saying that I didn't find Sombra's "lacking characterization" to be an issue.

I don't really find the whole "power level" thing a problem, personally. I mean, I can see your point, and I understand your stance, but I prefer a wishy-washy situation like the one we have now where you can make the argument that anything beats anything because canon isn't clear. The ficwriter in me appreciates vague canon, but mostly, I just like having things undefined because.. well, wiggle-able bits are more fun!

517322 And up here, we get another meter of snow or something!

Reminds me that I need to look into that whole Dresden malarky.

517385 What? NaPoWriMo was two months ago wasn'it?

I jest, I jest. If you're participating, I wish you the best of luck! I tried twice but never succeeded, and after I started writing pony I can easily match that output, I just never manage to wait for a months' start to begin a new project, haha.

517466 I'm sorry to disappoint! It's mostly AppleShy again, but since it's a continuity, there's PinkieDash too. As far as RariLight goes, well now, I won't say much, but it's not the fic's prime purpose at least!

517481 Wow. See, I have a very strong defiant streak. My first reply to "X is impossible" is "Is that a challenge?!". In some cases, like yesterday, it leads to me writing a 2k word long fic outline in 40 minutes in response to "CelestiaPie can't be done". In other cases, like right now, it just makes me burn twice as bright for RariLuna, because I of course agree. They get slotted, as you say, and you have no idea how hard I want to do better than that.

517935 Stop peeking at my notes!

519104 I did NaPoWriMo, too. It's been a very draining year. I can't wait for December, when I can relax. :twistnerd:

519104
Damn good point, if they didn't leave so much in the vague catagory i woulden't be able to enjoy such rich fanfiction.

519104

Cloudy...
Don't apologize for writing your stories you own way.
I read because I want to know what other people can come up with, whatever that is, and I'm sure that it'll be enjoyable regardless.

(:trollestia::heart::twilightblush:) < still hoping for that one... :twilightsheepish:

My brain. I do believe you are causing it to positively salivate.

I could get used to this sensation...
