On one-shot titles. · 6:34am Oct 14th, 2012

This is a personal gripe. Ignore this post if you don't want to hear me bitch about FIMFiction trends for a blogpost.

Right. So I've noticed a bit of a trend among one-shots of late (or rather, of the last six or so months, perhaps even longer than that). Take a look at this one-shot, if you will. Not the story, just this pretty picture.

At the time of this posting, it's... well, it's not in the featured box, but it's the top story on the front page, the last story posted for the day. The author's fairly popular, though, so I picked it. Also, it's a one-shot. That's what counts most here.

This picture. This picture worries me, and it worries me quite a lot.

No, I'm not talking about the Pony Verbs an Object title or the combination of Sad and that happy picture. I'm talking about this:

The titles. The titles don't match. The chapter title is distinctly different from the story title.

Why the fuck would you do that?!

What's that supposed to be? A subtitle? A subheading? An author's note on the nature of his own story? No, seriously, what the fuck? The field there is for naming your chapters, but if there's only one chapter, there's really no reason for you to be naming it otherwise. Imagine opening a copy of Flowers for Algernon--the short story, not the novel--and the table of contents said "Page 3, progres riports" and nothing else. To me, that's what this is like.

And this is a popular thing to do, too.

Please, writers. You do not need subtitles for your titles for your one-chapter story. Less is more.

Bad Vimbert! Bad!

I honestly fail to see the problem here. :applejackunsure:

Ezn

Eh. I get angry about minor stuff a lot, but I'm not really feeling this one. In any case, http://fimfiction.net/story/number/1/NameOfStory/NameOfStory kinda looks ugly. The subtitle thing can be cute sometimes.

On the subject of Ponies Verbing Objects, though, I'm starting a collection.

I view it as practice for naming my stories and chapters, since that's long been a weakness of mine. I respect your view on it, however. You've got a point.
