The second changeling attack on Equestria has helped the Royal Crystaller Sunburst in getting a fresh perspective on several aspects of his life. One particular aspect comes into focus when Shining Armor and Cadance offer him a weekend off.
With my quest/race to get a Rainbow S on all of Freedom Planet 2's stages, my creativity lit up like a bonfire again, and I started crafting an alternate ending of sorts for the past week.
That story is now complete, and posted in its entirety over on AO3.
I'd like for Starlight and Sunburst to have a moment that establishes what their partnership can achieve (Starburst's book smarts and Starlight's enormous but generally undirected power). Maybe they'll find the Ponyville end of the tear into the Equestria Girls world or something similarly ground-shaking.
However, I'd like for the shipping end to be left as a 'to be continued'. They have a great time and their friendship is certain but neither of them are certain that they're ready for or can sustain a romantic relationship right now. This is both because of the distance that separates them (and the fact both of them understand that they have a duty to remain where they are for now) and also because neither of them yet feel they are emotionally ready for such a commitment either.
Well, my first thought would be to absolutely have a haphazard cooking scene with Sunburst and Starlight (Twilight would need some convincing). The two of them bonding over not being great cooks would be a good way for Sunburst to figure out what Starlight DOES like, then they can go to a restaurant from there. Just a thought. Long-term, that's really up to you. Since they've only got a weekend, there's only so much that can be done, unless you'd like to extend this to include the start of a relationship, if you want it to go that way. Like 4385276 just said, leaving it open as to whether or not they even do turn this into something more would be a pretty good option, too.
Starlight gets court-ordered counseling and probation for her habit of resorting to brainwashing for every problem and frustration so she's out of the picture.
If you don't want them to end up as a couple a suitable option would be to "leave the door open" for the future for when Starlight graduates from being twilight's student to then think about relationships
But I would love to see them have a fluffy moment like a kiss on the cheek or whatever honestly its up to you

Probably just something conclusive, something that at least signifies they could pick it up again later.

(I hope they end up together though)
