Ha! You can't trick me! You thought to undermine my story by exposing my lack of knowledge about changeling biology, but as part of pretending to be a changeling today, I studied about them really hard!

In brief, the dark patches on the muzzles have scent-receptors. Regular non-sherbet changelings have them too, but you can't make out the discoloration against the black.

I keep telling myself I ought to come back and respond to this, because I think there's a layer of truth behind the joke here, and you deserve the regard of a serious answer. So, before I can procrastinate any longer ... Real talk!

The short answer is, I know exactly where you're coming from -- I'm close enough friends with enough transfolk (seems like half of the crowd I regularly hang out with online, to be honest ...) that the story of denial, a moment of epiphany, self-evaluation, and redefinition of gender roles is familiar territory.

I've also had ample time for my own reflection, and while there are certainly feminine elements of myself that I can happily and unironically embrace, I am comfortable with my danglies as given. I don't let that stop me from defining what my gender means to me -- what popular culture tells us masculinity should be is a toxic fucking thing. And I also don't let my danglies stop me from crossing lines on occasion.

I also ought to note that Horizon, for all that he's "me", is fundamentally a character I play. (This is not the case for Baxil, who I consider to be a mask that is more me-shaped than my body. You want to talk about dysphoria, it's all in the species direction.) I would be comfortable agreeing from the outside that Horizon is deeply in denial about something, but I keep it up because it's fun.
