    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Violet Verses · 3:11pm Nov 19th, 2016

Gosh, she looks like she’s singing some sort of song that people would think is from Disney but is more of an annoying parody that makes me want to cover my ears and scream because I absolutely love actual Disney songs and the movies they’re from and I’m excited for Moana to come out and—ahem.

Anyway, Violet here is the last of the parents of my main five OCs, and well, she’s kind of a hopeless romantic that likes fairy tales and poetry a lot. Sometimes it embarrasses Bluejinx.

And off we go into this tale!

Violet Verses is the youngest of Navy Stardust and Red Sonnet’s three foals. She grew up in Manehattan alongside her older brother and sister, Harbor Tide and Purple Prose.

Much of her childhood had her mother absent, as Navy was a sailor that often had to ship cargo to other ocean cities. She and her siblings were mainly looked after by their father, who was a lawmaker. Since he showed talent in writing in many senses—from writing bills to academic essays to creative pursuits—Violet and her sister grew curious about it and wanted to try writing. Often the result was scribbles on the walls.

Unlike Purple, who was more of a straightforward academic, Violet was more or less the more creative one. As a fancier of fiction—pony tales as a little filly and novels as she grew older—she was always writing some grand adventure or romance. She based her fancies on real life stories like how her parents met (which was an interesting adventure in of itself) or stories she read in the news.

She could do the flipside and write essays (like how her sister could be creative sometimes), but she didn’t really like it. Academic stuff left her mind blank and tired her out quicker than writing a story, and she has sometimes played dead to avoid schoolwork. Nevertheless, she at least wrote decent things that got her good grades.

Her cutie mark was earned when she won a writing contest that was published in the newspaper. She was a bit of a late bloomer at twelve, but nevertheless, she was happy to finally get it; she was sick of her classmates teasing her. Since then, she’s had a couple more stories published in the paper (her sister, who worked for the paper for a time, may have done her a favor).

Thanks in part to Purple keeping her away from Manehattan’s shadier neighborhoods, Violet tended to be a little naïve as a teen. She never really cared for any adventure in the big city, instead wanting to go out and see the rest of Equestria in a grand adventure, perhaps finding a handsome stallion to love along the way. So far, the most adventure she had had been day boat trips from time to time, or visiting her father’s hometown of Nickerlite. She would either be a pirate or a cowgirl depending on the area.

When her sister moved to Nickerlite to work the print shop, Violet tagged along with her. Not only did she want to keep her sister company, but she also wanted to get away from city life and perhaps find an opportunity to explore further than she had before. Of course, Purple wouldn’t let her, on account of worrying that she might get into trouble. Mad as she was, Violet didn’t have much heart to argue with her big sister.

She soon found that she could serve as an anchor for Purple’s temper. Violet made sure that when Purple was upset over the Pies’ choosing stone commanding Igneous Rock and Cloudy Quartz to wed (Purple had a crush on Igneous), that she didn’t write something she would regret. She also made sure that she didn’t stab any of the more infuriating townsfolk with a pencil.

After a couple of years, Violet had gotten used to the slow pace of Nickerlite, though she still wished that something interesting would happen. She got her wish one day when she, Purple, and a few others went out to interview the Pies about the convicts that worked at their farm. They were jumped by the infamous Roanie’s gang, but nopony was going down without a fight. With a couple of big stallions, Purple’s proficiency at pencil swordsmanship, and Violet just hitting gang members with rocks, they scared off the gang, as well as captured a young stallion named Jasper Horseshoe, dragging him to the rock farm as another convict.

Violet couldn’t help but notice how handsome Jasper was, as well as realizing he was only caught because he was staring at her. Curious, she took to sneaking away and just watching the young stallion work on the rock farm. She knew it when he noticed her, and could tell he was bitter about the incident, but in time, he mustered up the courage to talk with her.

She visited Jasper frequently, often to listen to a story about whatever adventure he had. He was so fascinating to listen to, she took to ignoring the Pies’ warning to stay away and her sister’s scoldings when she found out. Even when locked or guarded, she managed to slip through and visit him. She was pretty annoyed when she found out that Purple had threatened Jasper over that.

She had managed to convince him of the error of his bandit ways, and that he hurt a lot of ponies in his adventures. She even wondered if he had a family that wasn’t the gang, and hoped that they’d reunite on good terms.

It was about a year before Jasper was released for good behavior, and after learning a useful skill back at his home in Ponyville, he was settling down in Nickerlite. Violet liked to flirt with him whenever they crossed paths, but Purple was quite vicious in guarding her from the former bandit, much to Violet’s chagrin. She watched as Jasper had to earn the right to court and marry her, and was happy when he finally earned Purple’s approval.

She liked that he essentially considered her a princess during their marriage, though she hated it when he was overprotective—especially when she was pregnant. When he worried that a baby unicorn would tear up her insides with its horn, she often had to explain why that wouldn’t happen. She was thankful that Jasper calmed down when the pregnancy and birth went smoothly, resulting in their healthy baby colt, who Violet named Bluejinx.

Bluejinx looked like a brown-eyed unicorn version of his father, but he was awfully shy. Violet, Jasper, and Purple often tried to help him overcome that, though encounters with some of the meaner foals in town hindered that. If anything, Blue leaned more toward his mother and aunt’s writing talents, and exhibited curiosity for many subjects.

When their son was five, Violet and Jasper were expecting their second foal. Everything was all set to be a happily ever after in their humble life… until Jasper went on a hike and never returned.

A search party discovered his body at the base of the cliff, and when Violet received the news, she was shattered. In her upset, she ended up going through the pain of a miscarriage, which only worsened her state of mind. Try as her sister might to comfort her, and try as everyone could to give her their condolences, she couldn’t handle living in Nickerlite, and decided to go to Manehattan to live with her retired mother. So, she did just that, packing her belongings and bringing her little son along.

After settling in with her mother, she went out and got a job as a hotel custodian. Not the most exciting job, but she’ll do whatever she can to provide for her little boy. She was worried about Bluejinx starting school due to his shyness, but was pleasantly surprised when he came home that day announcing that he had made a friend.

Violet met said friend, Tomato Sandwich, sometime later, and she had to say that he was adorable and friendly, even if a bit excitable. Bluejinx had made some other friends, but Violet didn’t like them as much due to them not being so nice. She even grew concerned when Bluejinx started to imitate their mannerisms, which included saying not-so-nice things about Tomato’s older brother Cheese. She often had to scold him for saying that stuff for a pony he didn’t know that well. She even suggested not playing with the mean colts anymore.

Eventually, it took some emotional distress on Tomato’s part for Bluejinx to heed his mother’s advice. Violet was happy to welcome Tomato in their home whenever he needed it, even if he was becoming a grouch. She has also tried to make friends with Tomato’s mother, but they never really connected. At most, they’re just cordial to each other.

Violet watched her son grow and work for a scholarship at the local college, noting that he was a lot like her sister. She gave permission for him to spend his summers with his aunt during his college years, so that he could have more practice with his talent. All she asks is that he stays clean, healthy, and careful.

She often wishes Jasper had lived to see who Bluejinx had grown into.

It's not easy being the object of affection in someone else's story, especially when happily ever after turns out to not last as long as advertised. Still, Violet's definitely one of the better parents you've created.
